The Official “Ask the lead writer of SS2 anything” Thread!

Mass Effect is my favourite story in any videogame ever.

Sim Settlements is my second favourite story, in any videogame, ever. So VERY WELL DONE and Thankyou!

I have a question! Jake offered to travel with me. But that doesn't seem to be an option. Is that a bug, or something that's not yet implemented? ❤️

Kinggath has said that it's coming, but not yet implemented.
Haha. I have Jake as a companion now. I am replaying SS2, and during Scavvers Delight Jake follows the soul survivor until you get to Olivia. I might just do some side questing for a while with my buddy Jake at my side. :D

I get why it's there for story reasons (needed a bit of a timeskip to offscreen some events and advance the story to where it needed to be, and let's be real any half decent Player Character could've handled things solo) but is there any Perks that can at least alter the dialog after the Vertibird Down sequence? I had Toughness and Lifegiver on this current character and the dialog appeared the same as always, and I know it was figured out how to silently use variant dialog lines based on if the Player has a certain perk (since that's used elsewhere)...

Just curious on why you didn't put the VaultNet computer in the vault 81 Overseer's office? While reading the one in vault 75, there was some cool info there.

Got another thing that's been niggling at me for a while. Spoiler tagging this one because it's a screenshot.

What in the hell is this thing in Salvador's Improved Quarters? Some sort of... Institute Gauss Rifle monstrosity he's building himself? Has he been hanging out with Gremlin in the Weapons Lab? Can... can I have one too?

I can field that one.
Because Vault 81 is currently occupied, they might have replied to the messages, and their deputy overseer would have had information that would be useful to his new boss. And, if you are familiar with Vault 81, the terminal in the Overseer's Office is not the original one. If you find the original, you might also find their VaultNet Terminal.

"Raphael! Go find a rock and growl at it!"
I really REALLY love the writing on the Nightinggale quest line. The dynamic between the medics and Raphael is fantastic. He disagrees with what they do. He tries to dissuade them from helping raiders and gunners; because he doesn't want them to risk their safety for violent junkie trash. He says that even saving him was a bad decision!

But he is obviously grateful, and devoted to the Nightinggales. And protective of them. He will follow those reckless selfless fools into every war zone.

It's a sweet dynamic. And the way he is written suggests there's a lot more going on. Like the guy has his own epic story, and we are just passing through it.

That's actually a general praise for all the NPCs in this story. None of them feel like shallow plot devices in the story of the Soul Survivor. They feel like they all have their own story.

Even the Gunner captain in the hospital. That one line where he says he was corporal, but field promoted this morning; that speaks volumes of the tragedy of the Gunner unit in the hospital. They were dying off scene, hopelessly guarding the hospital while suffering from illness. It added a lot of depth and humanity.

Well done x

Heya, it's awesome to hear you're enjoying the Nightingales! I really enjoyed writing them, and it always makes me happy to see people getting so engaged with them!
Yorks is one of my favorite (underrated) minor characters, I almost wish I'd thought to include a bit more dialogue and content for him if he sticks around.

Well being that Kezz asked about Berman's ideal date I can't resist it now and need to know what Wises ideal date is. I must know for the sake of science. UwU
Ideal date for Wise? The detailed background check on whomever he is dating, followed by an evening of swapping stories (assuming the check showed up nothing sussy).

@Sirick and @CynicalBounce
This one is for both of you, since I know Cass is your character, Cynical!

Can we get a rundown of how the HQ Heads feel about the four vanilla factions? (Love the dialogue they have about it!)
Jake: Jake is sceptical about each of the major factions, but is most permissive of the Minutemen.
Lupe: Lupe is fascinated by BoS, scared of the Institute, somewhat admires the Railroad, and things the Minutemen are kinda cool.
Aiden: Dislikes old Minutemen (bad leadership) but respects Players Minutemen, rolls his eyes at the BoS, would pick a fight with the Institute, thinks the Railroad are deluded.
Theresa: Neutral to the Minutemen, thinks the BoS might do some good, distrusts the Institute, and admires the Railroad but thinks they may be wasting their time.
Casandra: Ask Cynical!
Mansfield: Thinks the Minutemen were doomed to fail, admires how professional the BoS can be, thinks the Railroad are a bit silly, terrified of the Institute but also fasciated.
Salvador: Is neutral to all groups. But does his best to avoid direct interaction with anything Institute related.

Buried Question: Will there be follow-up quests/epilogues for the 'benevolent' endings? LaMont feels like a bigger risk than Berman, but I loved the scale weigh in of "Life vs Vengeance". Ramifications for the 'No Atomic Rain' would also be nice, like the rebuilding of the gunners under Wise/Algernon and/or even LaMont/Berman? Maybe that will be related to my unburied question!

Unburied Question: Apologies if it has been asked before, but will Algernon return? (Or did I miss something as I rushed the story?) I felt he was the missing piece in pushing for a taking prisoners stance for enemy combatants in Chapter 3 (I may have not used an explosive shotgun in assaults if he was around...).
Buried Answer: There will be small payoffs if you let her live, but you may decide keeping her around is not worth it...

Unburied Answer: Algernon was planned to be part of Chapter 3, but his part got cut. We intend to go back and add in the content related to him!

My question; Was there cut content between "Led By Example" and "Belated Returns."?
Yes and no, the way the quests were designed to begin with had more time passing between Jake being kidnapped, and then you putting together a rescue attempt. But it quickly become clear there would not be much time before the main battle. So I had to decide do I let Players rescue Jake, but it feels a bit fast. Or no rescue at all. I decided on the first option, as to not take an option away, even if it feels a little fast.

Did you ponder having a naval battle? I honestly thought it was building to it with the whole coast thing :)
Did think about letting the Player board some of the boats and fight on them, but it felt too out of place, and too much work for the pay off. In future content we -may- see some more content out on the sea, but it's not a promise.

I have a question! Jake offered to travel with me. But that doesn't seem to be an option. Is that a bug, or something that's not yet implemented? ❤️
We did not manage to get Jake as a companion in before release, but it is planned and will be in next year some time I would bet!

I get why it's there for story reasons (needed a bit of a timeskip to offscreen some events and advance the story to where it needed to be, and let's be real any half decent Player Character could've handled things solo) but is there any Perks that can at least alter the dialog after the Vertibird Down sequence? I don't think so, things had to be planned to be quite linear for that sequence to work.

Just curious on why you didn't put the VaultNet computer in the vault 81 Overseer's office? While reading the one in vault 75, there was some cool info there.
ND was kind enough to answer that one!

What in the hell is this thing in Salvador's Improved Quarters?
[/SPOILER]
If you ask Sal about himself at some point, he'll mention it is one of his hobbies! (He likes to "fine tune" things)

Hey, just curious, but will all this flirting with Lydia actually leads somewhere?
Sadly no, I will allow Cynical to answer more on that one if she wants to!

Let me know if I missed any questions! I might not be too active over the holidays, so if I don't see you before, I wish you all a merry Christmas and happy new year!!

@Sirick
in chapter 3, when you have to choose the name of your empire.
what is the opinion of all the HQ staff about joining the main factions? (especially the opinion of aiden and theresa about rejoining the minutemen)

What would the HQ gang think of the following factions -
Enclave
NCR
The Pitt
Ronto (granted not much is known about them other than that they have a powerful military force and occupy what was Toronto)
Dave's Republic
Reilly's Rangers
