Inquiry on our boy Jake (romance spoilers beware)

I don’t know maybe I’m in the minority but Jake doesn’t seem like he’d run right back to Katelyn if we do find her alive, after all they were separated even before she left with Laura and while I’m sure Jake doesn’t hate her or anything like that, taking Laura like that probably means he isn’t overly happy with her, even if the reason was to give Laura a better settlement. But I don’t know maybe it’s just me and the reaction he gives if you call her a I love you at some point lol.
Honestly I agree. I hope he goes off on her and I hope she feels like crap for being selfish.

I felt worse for cola than I did for Paul. Now I can’t remember where I sent her.
But would you really want the SS to lose two partners in such a short period of time?
I totally forgot about Cola. I haven't seen her in ages - oh well Super Mutant snack.

Ok i had to post this. I just finished taking over the Gunner HQ (again) and caught the look on my guys face as Jake was telling me what a bro i am. The flirt option pops up and i think my face says it all.
Yes, we get it. You're straight. Those options are for your choice of response, it doesn't mean Jake has actually flirted with you so an expression on your characters face really wouldn't be expected now would it.

Chapter 2 is setting up Jake's romance, so you'll get a confirmation from Jake at the end of Chapter 2 if he considers the two of you in a romance or not. But you'll have to wait until Chapter 3 for the romance to really begin. Sorry!!
How do we know if we passed, or how to pass that speech check? I have CH10 an have done all the things he asks, plus typically gotten positive comments for how I complete tasks… but his response after the Gunner bunker was the “I didn’t mean it that way” response. I thought maybe I just wasn’t far enough in, but it sounds like he isn’t into my character except as a means to an ends for rebuilding and clearing bad guys.

You’ll have multiple attempts to flirt. Checks seem to follow the same checks as base game for romance (charisma checks with winking vault-boy on success). There are two Flirt options/speech checks in CH 2. The first one is the one you described. The second happens after
you attack GNN
. If you pass both speech checks, you get a special dialogue at the VERY end of CH 2 with Jake.

Thank you! I always play pretty high CH SoSu, but I had heard there were many other factors at play. I’m just thrilled to know the storyline has several cool options. For ppl saying “Romance doesn’t fit here”, hard disagree. We are all looking to matter and to connect irl, why would an in game storyline NOT offer the chance at more than friends? I say ‘war never changes’, but neither do our basic needs and wants as humans.

Agree with all of this. A lot of classic Fallout fans say Fallout 4 is a good game, but not a good fallout game. I completely disagree. I understand a lot of the criticism of the locked-in missing kid story and voiced protag taking away a lot of choices for replayability. But for me personally, I think the depth of emotion and connection you can get with the locked-in characters makes up for it.

Fallout 4 is my favorite fallout game because I connect with the charcters so much. The companions alone blow all other companions in the franchise out of the water in character depth. I play RPGs because I like building up a character in a world and effecting the world around me in positive (or not so positive) ways--Including building meaningful relationships with the characters in game.

And then you get to the SS2 characters, which are even better in many cases.
Jake himself is just on another level. He fits into my character headcannon in the game so well its like he was always meant to be there. I LOVE his story. Its a wonderful parallel to the Sole Survivor's. If, (and hopefully when :wink) we find his daughter, its going to feel SO cathartic in contrast to SS's own tragic family story.

Just the conversations people have about his motivations and behavior towards the player shows how well written he is. Is he just using the SS? Is he genuine in his admiration? Is he REALLY that nice of a guy, or is he faking it to get what he wants?

In my opinion, Jake comes across as a very sincere guy in everything he does. He sincerely IS that nice. He sincerely admires the player and what they're able to acomplish with him/for him. AND he sincerly will use (and admit to it) whoever and whatever he can to find his daughter. That doesnt mean he doesnt feel guilt for mistakes he's made or people that have been hurt directly or indirectly by his actions. Or that he doesnt like the player, or enjoy their company, or think of that them as a freind (or more than a friend if the player chooses) but he wont stop at anything to find his daughter. I feel that's his main driving force. Above helping people. Above rebuilding. Above his relationship with the player or anyone else for that matter. It's the essence of his character. He's dedicated and driven above all, even when he feels overwhelmed and out of his depth.

Which again, can fit so well with the SS's story if you play it that way. They're two sides of the same coin. I just GET him because my character is the same. She will do almost ANYTHING, use ANYONE, including Jake, to find her son. So she understands completly his confessional in the church. (My favorite Jake scene, bar none btw, Tom killed it!) She gets him conpletely. Anyway enough fan girling over sirick's writing. Lol

My one complaint about fallout 4 is that I wanted to take my minutemen and REBUILD this place. Now thanks to the amazing work of all the talented people on this team, I can do that! And even better, I get to do it while having meaninful bonds with interesting and engaging characters. So I guess my point with this rambly post was just to say thank you guys for this mod. It takes one of my favorite games and just makes it so much better!

Well said!
It feels so great to have the poor Sole Survivor join someone in striving for a better ending than what they got. ("Gee, thank you, son, for leaving me this synthetic copy of you as a kid... could've done something with your life and given me grandkids, but I guess "a nice reminder of what a letdown this reunion was" will have to do. And the place you called "dead", I call "months spent trying to make it a safer place for my son", so thanks a lot for that.")

While I recall having moments of fear, thinking he could have ulterior motives, I started severely doubting that when I heard his private signal. We've seen how MacCready handled the problem—traveling all the way from the Capital Wasteland to get a cure for his son. He's made bad choices, dealt with bad people, and done some bad things. When he sees his chance to get help, he takes it and makes it very clear he will repay the debt, no matter what it takes. Family is very important to both of these characters, they'll travel very far and do many dangerous things to try and keep the family they still have.
But to have Jake, not only be so polite and friendly to always let SS decide on when and how to do things; let SS know the parts of his backstory that he's comfortable telling; NEVER (does he ever??) COMPLAIN, but also tell them the truth instead of running away or hiding!?! That's when you know, Jake Evans has one beautiful courageous heart, and he can use my SS all he wants, she's just glad to serve.

Hmmmm... following all this discussion about romance or not romance, I realized that we still don't have a bit of a sweetheart with the 'guys', as they said up there. Tereza, Lupe, the blonde Nightgales financier.... lots of options... @Sirick

good day to whoever reads this! i skipped ahead to How To HQ bc i had to restart my save (unrelated to SS2) but i want to romance Jake. do i have to undo that skip & play thru the relevant missions for flirting or could there be a way for me to flirt with him in HQ? thanks so much!

Good day to you too!
From what I understand, the skip only picks the normal friendly choices. And in order to romance Jake, you have to pick the speech check at the end of "The end of the beginning". So yes, you have to undo the skip and play that quest.

cool beans, thanks!

Oooh I want him to be a part of my harem :D
I don't know, Jake seems to much like a goody two shoes. All that Darlin stuff starts to get annoying after a while. After living down in the southern states for a few years I think the men there use Darlin when they can't remember your name. Or don't care to. :)

I think Aiden would be more my type. He seems more likely to survive in the wasteland and could maybe put up with my shenanigans. Jake might get a little squeamish with all the killing going on.

Nah man, he loves when you kill the raiders who took your settlers hostage and has Silver Shroud fantasies. Dude low-key wants to be a superhero.

As for the Jake and Aiden romance debate. coughs and points to my fic I uh, may have something you enjoy.

He seems to like when "you" kill raiders. He has a tendency to stay back where it's safer. Like he needs your help with a couple of raiders in Concord. Let's you go first at Olivia, even sends you off to deal with the raiders while he plays with the terminal.
Then there's Gunner Plaza where he hides in the basement until you can deal with the bad guys.

I read through chapter 7 already and it is amazing. Great writing!
