Crash when inside Settlement

Whenever I am inside in my settlements my game seems prone to crash. I've experienced this in Sanctuary, outpost Zimonja and even as far as Longfellow's cabin. Heck, in the most recent instance I simply turned around after fast-traveling to outpost Zimonja and crashed. Can someone point me to a solution please? So far, I've lowered my Fallout 4 Graphics from ultra to medium, added the papyrus lines suggested by the "performance" wiki page, and went to the in-game holotape and toggled special effects off. I have also installed that unofficial crash fix esp, but experienced no change.

Is this something you can replicate consistently? For example, every time you load a particular save file?

If so, it should just take a few rounds of tests to find the problem. If not, this gets a little more time consuming, as we won't know right away if you've solved it after each test. The most obvious test, I think, is to disable everything related to Sim Settlements and load your game to see if the crash continues.

I have tried loading a previous save file and the issue still occurs. The game crashes pretty reliably as I have discovered all I need to do is walk in a certain direction. For Sanctuary (Which is a Lv. 3 ROTC settlement), it happens near the top east martial plot that overlooks the settlement, or on the cardboard and pipe walkways leading up to it. For Longfellow's Cabin, there is a ridge that leads up to the settlement. Walking on the elevated land to the west of that ridge consistantly causes a crash. For Outpost Zimonja (a Lv. 1 ROTC Settlement), it seems to be around the area you spawn when you fast-travel there or around the settlement workbench.

I can confirm that Sim Settlements is indeed the cause of the issue. I was able to walk around my settlements with no issue after disabling sim settlements.

On a side note I should add that I don't have any FPS issues inside settlements which is odd. The game seems to crash instantly and spontaneously.

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

If you stand still long enough in the middle of one of those settlements, does the crash ever occur? You moving seems like a strange trigger for it - usually it's something like the AI trying to move, or a plot upgrading - which would occur even if you stood still.

Is indeed triggered by movement. I've stood idle at Outpost Zimonja for 2 minutes and even waited as that raider and 2 turrets attacked me from behind (only to be killed by my settlers). After the 2 minutes i walked around my entire settlement and crashed near the workshop bench again. Same for Sanctuary and Longfellow's Cabin.

Few more questions - Do you have Uncapped Settlement Surplus installed? Do you keep a lot of things stored in your workbench? Do you keep a lot of the Shipment items stored anywhere?

I do have Uncapped Settlement Surplus installed. Most of my junk is stored in the Finch Farm Settlement Workbench though because I used IDEK's Logistics station to designate that as storage.

One of the game's classic crashes can occur if you have too many things in a workbench - it's a bizarre bug and I think it's the actual reason that surplus was capped in the first place.

Do your crashes still occur if you walk away from the workbench? Can you try walking away in multiple directions to see if there are directions you can walk that don't trigger it?

In retrospect, most of the crashes do occur when walking towards a workbench. For the most part, waking away from the workbench is fine. One exception however is Longfellow's Cabin where it still crashes even if im walking away from the workbench by walking into that aforementioned spot by the ridge/small valley. As long as I avoid those specific places, my game is fine.

My gut says you're hitting that silly error with too much stuff in your workbench. I'm a little swamped right now, but if you want to upload your save file to dropbox.com and PM me with a link to it and a little reminder of this conversation, I'll see if I can write you a custom script to fix it.
