I just realized, the sole survivor knows nothing about Boston. Nothing.
At least a few map markers ought to be on the map, right from the beginning, right? I was looking at a list of locations in fallout 4 and quite a few of them would be reasonably well known to anyone with even a little knowledge of the area. Boston residents, I assume, probably know which direction Salem is, or maybe where the airport is, etc.
I figured, hell, why not flip on a bunch of pre-war map markers for my next playthrough? I tend to like immersion even when I don't need it.
Of course it ends up being harder than I expected, as is almost always the case with the fallout 4 creation kit.
    I found this:
    https://www.creationkit.com/index.php?title=Map_Marker
And started to wonder if I have a head injury, as I've spent WAY too much time trying and failing to find this "marker data tab" that it says I need. It feels like it should be in plain sight rather than hidden in some crazy place, so maybe I'm having a brain fart. Probably that, as I have no idea why I'm spending all this time on something that I really don't need to do for a replay. It would have been interesting on my first play through. :)

Yeah but that reveals _everything_ even stuff that is secret or hidden and would never realistically be in that book, etc.

It's about my sense of immersion. The sole survivor should wake up knowing where certain Boston landmarks are, for instance, as he/she lived there. But there wouldn't likely be a tour book showing where secret hidden locations in the glowing sea are, for instance. Why would this book have the institute and railroad's location in it? Breaks my immersion, which is what I'm going for here.

i'm not following you at all. you are putting your own "should" and "should not" out there as some sort of indisputable lore canon. what you consider "immersive" and/or canon is not the same for everyone else.

regardless, i like the mod, perhaps someone else will find the link useful.

I was only talking about my own game and talking about my own sense of how things look. I'm obviously not telling anyone else how to play, of course not.
I was just explaining why that particular mod wasn't related to the question I'd asked.

    well it entirely is related, as it deals with map markers, which is what your original post was talking about. there were two things in the post;

    1. here's a mod you could look at which could give you some insight into what you're trying to do
    2. here's a mod that could simply give you a solution

which is why i suggested it.

but whatever mate, i can't read your mind, and as you're so dismissive of a post which was meant to offer you a bit of assistance, i'll leave you to your ramblings. good luck.

Ramblings? Are you trying to insult me? I'm just hoping to having a conversation about realism in the game. You offered an unrealistic cheat, and I tried to explain why I wasn't interested in an unrealistic cheat.
You seemed to dislike that, and I basically told you, "no worries. You do you. I am not trying to tell you how to play the game."
God I hate the internet sometimes.

I have used this in the past. Thanks for the reminder.

I pretty much know where everything is so I don't bother nor do I need some. Mag in Ramger cabin gives location for Diamond City Would have been nice if there was more mags and locations...

ramblings - as in a stream of conciousness.

it's not an "unrealistic cheat" a console command is a cheat - this is, as the mod describes, a more "immersive" as in you have to go and find it, method of putting map markers on your pip boy. which given you seem to be on some immersion crusade, i thought you could either use, or pull apart to see how to do it given you said you were struggling.

if you want to play the role of immersion advocate, then literally everything about this game and the entire franchise can be pulled apart - starting with pip-boys, mr handy's, radiation, atomic powered cars that explode when shot, the landscape - i mean where do you draw the line?

it's all dependent on what a player personally accepts and as i said, i can't read your mind. the reply was meant as a helpful gesture, nothing more.

by the way, at no point did you say, or intimate "no worries, you do you". that would actually have been easier and less dismissive to type compared to the reply that did come my way. Don't blame the internet for that - take a look a little closer to home with the dismissive reply that came out. Fix that you fix your internet.

That’s actually a kinda cool idea. Couple it with the op’s thought of having a few places “known” by the SS already, like:

    Boston Airport
Boston Common (the park in the intro)
    Boston Library
    Fort Hagen?
    The Castle?

Ideas of places that might fit in with a magazine theme? Perhaps a half-dozen. I’m currently thinking of:

    Bunker Hill
    Greygarden

And reading the flyers might add:

    Easy City Downs
    Jamaica Plains

It doesn't matter what the player knows: the pip-boy doesn't know anything. it probably got resetted somewhere between it's original owner dying and the player picking it up. Or it was pretty much blank to begin with.
The player just didn't bother to enter all the locations they knew into the thing.

This could be a whole new mod. Pickup x and triggers script to do a map marker...

Somehow I would think being frozen for over 200 hundred years, amnesia would be a side affect

Which honestly would be an affect that should have been immersively applied.

    Remember cosworth within.a few minutes?

    Pish posh bs.

red rocket map: more of an ad brochure: "15x in boston!"
puts all the RRs on the map. maybe some motels, too.
tourist brochure: puts stuff for "sightseeing" on the map. goodneighbor, the library, churches, etc.
boston subway map: adds all subway stations

and so on. basically, several items for different categories of locations.

for post-war stuff, maybe notes from some trader about trade routes. or just hand-drawn maps from random explorers

HahahHa, thanks @Whisper you know my buttons :blum

I will say, this is what I use. For the reason it seems to me that the pre war markers would be on the map. Still it is also totally logical why they wouldn’t be. I understand why the developers chose to go that route. Cool.

    https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/38143. :declare

    And leave it at.

It’s a game. Use your imagination if something doesn’t fit, make it or fix it. Hey be nice make a mod see if others agree?

If you make a thread it is good protocol to be accepting of any suggestions even the ones you don’t like. If the intent was to be helpful, my take on it is to show nothing but gratitude for the suggestions.

I have seen a lot of posts on these forums.

If you think someone misses your intent, then restate it more clearly and nicely. That is on the poster. A “cute sharp remark” is not a substitute for clarity and is seen for what it is by everyone.

None of us can read each other’s mind. A dog maybe can, but not us. :bye

Hahaha, I live near a city where where most who have lived there their entire lives can’t find their bung-sides while driving. Their maps might as well be blank :crazy :friends

Hell it takes me ages to remember the layout of roads - I’m one of those who almost literally cannot find their ass with both hands. :lol

Yeah the pip-boy was a science-based one for use in a vault - why would there be a marked map in it? So I can understand why the map is blank w/regards to actual placemarks: it’s the general roadmap only. The amnesia idea is totally reasonable too.

Since the SS is used to driving he still needs to travel to places on foot the first time, so no fast-travel. Only base map markers.

Now: I’m thinking Boston Airport because that’d be where Nate comes through on leave or whatever. Boston Common ‘cause one of the lore videos that Oxhorn did (with restored terminals) and some of Nora’s dialogue options indicates that there is where she got pregnant. Those are both kinda big deals for the couple. They could be made visible right after the first quest with Codsworth is done, the SS puts them on his pip-boy as navigation reminders.

A Red Rocket flyer sounds interesting. “On X street, Lexington...on Y street, Quincy...” would enable the Lexington and Quincy markers like Diamond City gets enabled. There’s the one at the Fort Strong Satellite Array too? Where else?

Tourist map - Rocky Narrows, the Robot Park, Egret Tours Marina.

Subway map - I’m not sure how many there are. Might be too many?

A couple of trader maps - University Point? Where else?

you could maybe break it down - pre war - some old city atlas or old world things to do in boston kind of deal that featured the old freedom trail and the history around the north bridge that preston talks about (some history must have been passed down).
you could then add post-war documents - the wastelander's guides, for example, that the lone wanderer helped to put together in megaton that made their way north.
latterly rudimentary settlement maps - nick talks about a settlement that got wiped off the map in years gone by. i'd love to know where that settlement was - it wasn't university point, or at least, i don't think it was - but certainly i'd expect to find some sort of "modern" documennt showing roughly, where settlements were to be found.
also, soon after sanctuary had been settled by the sole survivor and the quincy survivors, word gets back to travis in diamond city, so they knew the place existed and knew it was a ghost town (the sole suvivor is watched by deacon at some point too).
some of the hidden locations, like the very small trading post just down from sanctuary could be referenced. after all, you'd want peope to know of your existence if you're a trader. same with the guy down the road from coastal cottage, and the small trader in the rabbit ranch just up from the lake near the gunner overpass.

Whatever happened to just plain old treasure maps... I know there are a few notes left around and gives you a new location … but a hidden gun or that drug/food paste hint... more is simply needed.

"hey, ma, me and the guys headed down to the ol' fallons store and left you x y z in the culvert under xxx"

    Or,

"hi, honey, left your rifle in the hall closet. cleaned it for you"

one of the few good ideas in fallout 76 were those crudely drawn treasure maps. that's what i meant when i said post-war. it wouldn't be anywhere as detailed as pre-war ordinance suvey maps - just some very crudely drawn directions as rough as a bears a$$. that would be something deeply immersive, pointing out, for example, the location of diamond city from starlight drive-in, or quincy from university point and so on.
