Closed Settlers standing in the middle of the road and not at their shops

Could be Settler Sandbox Overhaul. It's not always a settlement mod that causes settlement issues though - the way the Creation Kit works, you can accidentally alter records and a lot of mod authors don't know how to clean up those edits.

yeah I grabbed that mod to help with the issues of them going up stairs as I read that settlers have a hard time going up multi-floor structures. Shorty after sending that last reply I noticed more of them in shops ect. Would maybe using f4edit and creating a merge match help?

Well then I'm glad its not me and some mod conflict, for those having trouble getting them on a muli-floor build areas, try one of these

they both edit the AI movement to give them better access to stairs, steps, ect.

I know there is another mod out there that stops them from just gathering outside of a building you built and helps them go in it, but I cant find the video I saw it in to save my life. It was on gopher's or oxhorns channel I think.

Thanks! Hope this gets them moving around in some multilevel towns, like that gigantic vault 85

What were you thinking of merging?

@Vaporize Did you ever figure out what was causing all of your settlers to slack off?

I haven't gone back for a few weeks, took a small break. I do remember not being able to find the root cause because I would visit sometimes and one or two of them would be at their shops during the day and then other times back just standing around not moving. I tried building a bar not using the mod and they would gather around that some times but during the day I still think i'm going to have the same problem when I get back to it. I do however have the latest patch if your mod though, I just wonder if others have this issue or its a problem with the AI of the settlers and I just never noticed it because I didn't really care about settlements until your mod came around. I'll be sure to post again with an update.

Lagging with Timescale set at 1 = 5 for me (Horizon survival) does cause grouping. I change to 1 = 20 when I am going into a settlement.

Staging a protest.... will no longer work for bottle caps... demand a real world currency!!

So in the evening my settlers gathers up outside my bars, as they should, but they are just standing there. I've put down several couches but they won't sit down.
Do i need a mod for that? I have the Extended Sandbox mod.

If a large amount shows up, sometimes it seems like the engine has issues finding something for each settler to do, sometimes they just like the stare creepily at things... example below... the Sanctuary fountain cult....

I have found Marcy staring intently at a tree once... LOL... no complaining then...

My settlers in Sanctuary do something like that.... twice. First, they head for the bar in the evening. Then after that, a good number of them head up to the office above the workshop. This shot only shows about half of the room, there are another half dozen people to the left. Kinda cool in a way, the settlers wanting to speak to the mayor.

In my current game I have a romanesque entertainment building with a few water features and other stuff. When I go there, half my security guards are standing inside the pond looking soggy and confused.

I'll eventually get around to posting pictures, I am building out a large scale settlement to really showcase to the mod authors what a large scale settlement using as much of their works looks like. It's only at 55 settlers right now so it'll be a while before I hit my self-imposed caps.

Agreed on the lights, I changed my pool lights out for flourescent subway lights and my framerate dropped from 55ish to 20ish. I'll be taking those right back out soon.

The AI in the game does Bar/Restaurant for dinner, then fun time for a few hours before bed. It looks like a lot of fun stuff is upstairs so you're seeing their post-dinner idles.

Fun thing I've noticed: If you don't have enough food providers/seating for the settlers to come into the bar rec area and sit down for a few minutes, they'll hang out there until they get a chance to eat. Even with Sim Settlements, throw down a few booths for them to sit at (I use a 4 person booth per 10 settlers) and they'll be in and out and then off to do their own thing quickly.

Has anyone found what causes this?
I have tried with and without Settler Sandbox Overhaul but they still just act like idiots :)

In my case, script overload is the real cause. 50-60 settlers is borderline angst for the script engine. PC processing power is irrelevent, the script engine itself starts losing its marbles after a while. If you're a settlement freak like I am, the best thing you can do is put in the changes Kinggath references on the wiki optimization page (link below). The script runtime limits changes by themselves make things a lot less painful for a lot longer before they start crapping out.

For reference, my system is a quad core closed loop water cooled i7 6700k with a separate water cooled (independent closed loop) GTX1080 with 32gb of memory. Everything is on Ultra with all the Nvidia options turned on.

I don't usually lack horsepower of any sort but I will occasionally get lag or framerate degredation due to limitations of the game engine itself. FO4 has spots where it drops to 9 fps in my current Sanctuary and scripts take forever to run and settlers can take up to 15 minutes to assign so I need to do some experimentation with the numbers in the ini files to see if I can optimize further and get everything scaled for my larger settlements.

One last thing to try: Try toggling off the AI for at least a few minutes while in the problem settlement - console: tai
Settlers will stop moving around and responding to requests while AI is off. When I do this and I turn it on again after a few minutes, quite often whatever bottleneck/deadlock in the engine that is causing the issue appears to have resolved itself and things work again for a little while. It's not a perfect solution but it is another tool to put in the box. My theory is that the main game scripts lag out because of the settler scripts taking so much runtime and the settler scripts rely on the main game scripts. Toggling settler AI off for a period of time lets the main game get caught up so when you turn the settlers back on, any outstanding requests of the main engine are resolved.

Yeah, tell me about it, my fps drops to a slideshow in Sanctuary and i "only" have around 50ish slots.
I've done what i can with the wiki performance options (Detailed Off, Lights Off, Clutter Off)

I did notice today that one or two settlers acctually sat down for a few seconds so the issue with the script overload you describe sure sounds like the culprit here.

Thanks for that very detalied answer @tankthing. Will try to toggle off the AI as you suggested

@Mikazu Since you're on PC, you have a lot more options to help with script lag. That page also has some ini settings for Papyrus that can dramatically improve your script performance.
