Question About Ammo Factory Plots

Hey, I've been away from Fallout 4 for a while and discovered this mod that lets you reform the Institute (With work) so I'm coming back to the game to play an Institute playthrough after chickening out and going Minute Man every time.

Anyway, what I've been wondering is this. How good exactly is the munitions factory plots and the high tech ammo plots? Like do they still run only when you are in the settlment? Are they are a really good source of ammo for a automatic character build once your industry gets going? Can I control what it outputs or does it randomly makes whatever is falls under ballistics and whatever falls under energy weapons?

I did an entire run recently where I played purely SS supported - no looting anything or buying anything from non-SS provided mats, ammo, vendor gear, etc.

So to answer your questions:

1. The regular munitions factory plot is pretty good. It doesn't matter if you are in or out of settlement, once you get them up and running, they create a set amount of ammo over time and auto deposit them into your workbench.

I highly, highly recommend using IDEK logistic addon to SS as well, and use the collect caps, ammo, etc setting so it sweeps all ammo made in various settlements into your main storage. Lot easier than running around collecting all your ammo.

However, 'pretty good' doesn't mean it's a huge flow - not at first, especially with lower level plot and only a couple settlements with them. If you get 6+ settlements with munitions factories, you get a pretty decent rate of ammo - but you'll still need to buy from weapons vendor as well - which I'd recommend you also create.

Unlike munitions factory though you only really need 1 weapon vendor since they all share inventory - you wont get more ammo to buy just because you have more vendors, although the location convenience is nice if you have one in every settlement or where ever you visit more frequently.

2. The high tech ammo - like nukes and stuff, you don't nearly get enough to be a reasonably sustainable source of sole ammo - it's more like a bonus amount to whatever else you loot, scrounge, and buy from other vendors.

3. If you combine #1 (munitions plots in all your controlled settlements) + weapons vendor you eventuallyh get up to level 3 + build some scrap plots to provide you basic scrap and use that to create a small ammo conveyor assuming you have the contraptions DLC, you can pretty much be completely self sufficient in ammo long as you rotate and use several different ammo type weapons and don't spray n pray everything.
