How about just the cooking part of a kitchen in a 1x1 area to better fit into an existing space?
It seems a shame to assign a settler to a simple stove put in an existing diner that's in good shape. So if you have a diner or cafeteria which already has all of the tables, chairs, counters and booths adding the existing kitchen internal recreational plot might be hard to work around.
Places like the diner at the edge of Jamaica plains, which I think needs all settlements extended to reach, or the upstairs cafe within the settlement could perhaps be used for a plot without gutting them to make room. Settlers tend to hang out at the far away diner in my settlement despite my having cleaned up the cafe and it's inexplicable invisible "sunning cat" markers.
