My version of SimSettlements is Three-in-One v4.2.1.

As soon as I get into range where I would discover Sanctuary, I get a CTD.

If I have everything enabled except for SimSettlements related stuff, I can enter sanctuary fine. If I disable everything but SimSettlements.esm, StartMeUp.esp, and the various ESL's, I CTD as soon as I would discover Sanctuary.

I have tried starting a completely new save with only the SimSettlements.esm, StartMeUp.esp, and the ESL's and I still get a CTD at the same point. I have tried reinstalling SimSettlements, and I have also tried downloading it manually and then adding it to vortex as opposed to letting vortex download it normally. All result in the same CTD.

Anyone have a clue what the issue might be?
 
Not an expert but maybe you need to test with StartMeUp disabled. And possible add the following mod to delay CC initial initialization.

It could be that startme up is not allowing sim settlements to complete initialization, as well as your CC mods.

FYI - I use Mod. Organizer 2. As it seems to me anyway to be more flexible and intuitive. But your mileage may vary. Concealed Armor is only compatible with AWKCR 3.0.2 at least that was true the last time I checked. So it maybe possible that you have some mod compatibility issues as well.

My load order has all the related mod's at the top of the load listing.

Some folks love: WOTC and StartMeUp, I see these two mods so often with users who come here with broken saves it really isn't funny. :sorry

They are probably fine mods in their own right but once I see them in a user load order with a problem "it doesn't end well."

Really, this load order is really scary. I would try to fix what you can and get things somewhat organized.

Aint IncreasedSettlerPopulation50.esp redundant with WorkshopFramework.esm since you can just disable charisma?

A CTD entering Sanctuary before building is usually caused by mods messing with the cells in Sanctuary.

Did you set up Red Rocket, Abernathy, and Sanctuary as prebuilt settlements?

Lone Wolf might be onto something as well with the StartMeUp clashing the CC start ups that usually occur exiting the Vault. The alternate start mods have always been prone to bugs even going back into the Skyrim ones.

Yeah, you should never have any mods loading before the DLCs and CC files. Kinda surprised you got that far without a crash or some other horrendous issue.
 
The mod I recommended was in another thread where KG responded to a similar issue with CC mods, seeming to interfere with sim settlements initialization. In that thread it seem the Tunnel Snakes was the issue.
 
One thing I did forget to mention in my first post was there was maybe twice in my troubleshooting I was able to make it to codworth, but it was not consistent at all.

I did try that delayed CC quest addon, as well as completely disabling the CC addons. Neither of those worked.

I have no clue how I managed to split the main game/dlc with sim settlements. Regardless I did fix that, but it didn't fix my issue.

I don't think StartMeUp or War for the Commonwealth should be an issue. I had previously played with both alongside Sim Settlements in mid 2019. Regardless, I did try without StartMeUp (admittedly, I forgot to disable wotc), but I got the same CTD.

I tried a different start addon, SKKFastStart, since that seemingly just warps you straight to the Vault 111 elevator and puts you outside as normal, as opposed to the custom stuff startmeup does. Still the same CTD.

I don't think my load order was an issue since I was having the same CTD even with just SimSettlements+the CC stuff enabled.

In my original file before trying all this I did have a revamped Abernathy mod. I did end up disabling it(along with all my other mods to varying degrees while trying to find the issue) and creating a new character, so that's not it.




I did also try downgrading to older versions of Sim Settlements: 4.2.0, then 4.1.0, and finally 4.0.0. Same CTD on all of them.

At this point I'm just going to try a fresh reinstall of the whole game.
 
By the way one of the reasons I use Mod. Organizer 2 is so I don't have to reinstall the whole game, to cleanup bad or possible corrupt mod installations. Since it uses a virtual filesystem to overlay mod changes to the base game.

Yeah, disabling aint going to do any good. Pretty sure the changes made by that mod would be baked into your save file.

Since you were able to make it to Codsworth sometimes I would say it seems to be more of clash issue with something going on in the cell area. CTDs are usually very consistent when they occur for certain causes of CTDs. For example, building in all three settlements and overloading the area you are always going to CTD by bridge area.

In my experience when I had random CTDs just running around Sanctuary it always had something to do with mods like Cleaner Sanctuary, Sanctuary Lite, using a scrapping mod to remove the houses, messing with the bridge, etc. It always just ended up with something being unstable in the area.

I would also want to ensure weapon debris is disabled, that causes a lot of a random crashes.
 
Two things.
1. That save is ruined. Having any mod load before the main esm's is enough to just bin it. Any problems you run into going forward could be caused by that and you would never know for sure.
2. It's impossible to run SS alongside WOTC, believe me I've done everything I can to get them to work together but the engine cannot handle them both.
If you are very lucky you will make it to mid game, by that stage your save file will be about 100mb and then the constant CTD's will start.

Framework allows you to adjust a lot of stuff.
Charisma limits is the big one I use (they never made sense anyways.)
You can also adjust things like how many plants and defense points a settler can do.
You can turn the shelter mechanic off (although SS will still use it...)
You can fix robot happiness, make robots not count as settlers, etc.

Anyways figured I would point out the redundant mods because any time you can reduce the number of mods without giving up mod features is a good thing.
 
wotc when it was supported was nothing but a buggy, bloated, unstable mess that wrecked about a dozen play throughs i had until i got sick of it.

get rid of it. no arguments, no but what ifs nothing. delete it. it's broken. it's done.

if you want a more lively world, look at all the mods from skk. but before you do anything - you need to fix that load order. not a word of a lie, thats one of the worst load orders i've ever seen, and how you got your game to load with it is little short of a miracle.

If I have everything enabled except for SimSettlements related stuff, I can enter sanctuary fine. If I disable everything but SimSettlements.esm, StartMeUp.esp, and the various ESL's, I CTD as soon as I would discover Sanctuary.

I have tried starting a completely new save with only the SimSettlements.esm, StartMeUp.esp, and the ESL's and I still get a CTD at the same point. I have tried reinstalling SimSettlements, and I have also tried downloading it manually and then adding it to vortex as opposed to letting vortex download it normally. All result in the same CTD.

Anyone have a clue what the issue might be?

Almost everything.... what I would do 1st is uninstall everything, uninstall game through steam, delete the game folder - completely, reinstall Fallout 4 from steam, verify the files, and then start with this...

Thanks for the help everyone. I did take some suggestions for mod replacements.

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm fairly certain my issue was with an old version of Place Everywhere. When trying to figure out my problem yesterday, i did have some seemingly unconnected crashes. Notably, three in particular.:
1.If I tabbed out while the game was initially loading (when it would play those SPECIAL videos) and tabbed back
2.When a group of enemies spawned from War of the Commonwealth.
3. Instantly when I tried to enter vats on an enemy.

After reinstalling fallout 4 today, I ended up slowly enabling all my mods again to see if I had the same issue as before (CTD when discovering Sanctuary). Most of them seemed fined, but I eventually found out Place Everywhere seemed to be causing my crash when tabbing out. I updated that, then slowly continued renabling all my previous mods. I eventually got everything renabled and I no longer have any issues.

TLDR: I'm fairly certain an old version of Place Everywhere was the issue all along.



Against everyone's judgement, I think I will be continuing with War of the Commonwealth though. I love how it adds so many spawn points with large groups of enemies. That being said though, are there any good replacement mods that will do the same thing? I had heard Eternal Warfare is good, but that it doesn't add any spawn points to expansion areas.

If it is a constant CTD issue and not the infamous VATS freeze it is usually related to armor type mods. Something about corrupt values and hit locations or something.

Not a bet I would take considering I have used Place Everywhere for thousands of hours and never had an issue.

I think you got a really bad load order and combined with something (or causing) corrupting the hit location data.

Your call as its your game, but, if you get future CTD's with that mod still in your load order, you may want to take your issues to the authors of that, and have them take a look. And, I'll wish you good luck with that.
