CTD after The Castle upgrades to level 1.

I visited my castle perfectly fine, and donated some supplies. Some time passed and I was prompted that "city wide improvements" were being made. After this I CTD almost immediately upon fast travel or trying to approach it on foot. I have a save before this issue, and I can walk around fine, but as soon as I leave and my settlers start building I can no longer visit the Castle without crashing right away.

Are you on version 3.2.0a for Sim Settlements, and 3.2.0 for Industrial Revolution and Rise of the Commonwealth?
Thank you
There is no CP Spawn line, but this is the last patch of text before the "VM is freezing..." line.

I can upload the entire fire if needed.

You're going to want to change City Upgrades to manual as soon as you load up so that it doesn't upgrade.

If it's not working at level 1, for you - it's really hard to tell what the problem could be, the builds are not very complex at that level. Unfortunately, saves aren't very helpful any longer, I've worked out what I can from them.

Is this an old save? Do you have a ton of mods installed?

This was on version 3.15, I could probably go back to the save and change it to manual, but I'd be losing a ton of progress. I have around 80 mods, but the majority have nothing to do with settlements, with the few I have other than Sim Settlements being Better Settlers, Better Vendor Stalls, SSE, and Spring Cleaning. I guess I'm just gonna suck it up and never go back to the Castle, albeit I wanted to finish up my game taking out the brotherhood.

Thanks for the reply though gath.

Have you tried to use the [Tools][Remote Self Destruct] tool in the City Managers Holotape? It will remove The Castle's progress but if you can't get into the area after you will know if it is a corrupt cell or not. Also, you do not have many mods, but a conflicting mod does not have to be a settlement mod. Settlement mods are just more likely to cause an issue, and then there are the known vanilla bugs. If blowing up the castle does not allow access you have not really lost anything, if it does not using the city plans may help, although I would limit the number of settlers there.
Thank you

I can't seem to get close enough to the settlement to use remote self destruct without it crashing.

I have the same issue, only for me it is happening in Sanctuary.
The upgrade level was Level 0 (92%), so I donated some supplies and left to do some questing.
After a while I tried to go back to but as soon I get near Sanctuary the game crashes.

If you can't get close enough to remote detonate the place, you almost certainly have a corrupt cell in your save file. Generally you should be able to get fairly close to the settlement though as a corrupt cell is incredibly rare.

You can also try first running the console command tai before trying to go to your settlement. This will disable AI in case the crash you are receiving is just do to the AI getting stuck trying to path somewhere.

Then I should try playing the lottery or something. I tried disabling tai and it didn't work. I can get around a little before 100m from the castle, near the playground before my game crashes, and I can't remote detonate from there.

I'm having the same exact problems, except it's from level 1 to level 2. I tried to go to the castle to check out the level 2 upgrade, instant CTD. Couldn't approach from any angle close enough for it to load visible objects. Though the objects actually being rendered didn't matter. I tried approaching backwards and it still CTD'ed. I had a save that was while it was upgrading, and I can go to it just fine. Then I'll sit there, and once it finishes upgrading, bam! CTD. I can use the destroy settlement option to level it to the ground, so now it's like Schrodinger's Settlement, both fucked and unfucked. I did use Spring Cleaning to sweep up one singular pile of dust that offended me like nineteen hours ago, so it might be ye' olde scrap crash, but if that's the case, can I do anything about it, or is the only option to burn the entire settlement to the ground now?

Well if it is the scrap crash trying to build a generator will CTD. Plus, that would only be on the save that actually is crashing. You can use the save that is not crashing and halt the upgrade. You can check out if it is the scrap crash by using the destroy all settlements, make sure your good save is not an autosave, and then go to the castle and see if a generator CTD's. There are a few things you might try if it is the scrap crash but they rely on being able to scrap the settlement. You can look here for other info and see if anything else seems similar.

Have you experienced the Scrap Crash?
Thank you

Alright, I wanted to get some research done on this, and it took FOREVER to wait until my settlement wanted to upgrade from 0 to 1. Like hours and hours. So I went to the save that was working and halted the upgrade. I isolated a couple of generators that I'd built to complete the retaking the castle quest as being the problem. When I tried to scrap them, instant CTD. I could reset the settlement though, so I did that, burned it to the ground and rebuilt it. Donated all the scrap it needed to upgrade, and then waited hours and freaking hours until the settlement decided it wanted to. When it did? Instant CTD every time I go there.

Oh, and while it was still a level 0, I built an armor table, and got an instant CTD trying to scrap it, too.

Wondering how do I go about cleaning my save in an attempt to fix The Castle's corrupt cell. I tried looking on your channel but the only fallrim video there is fixing a save file bug back in 1.x .

There is no way to fix a corrupt cell right now. I've been helping the creator of Fallrim Tools to collect data on how to do it, but he has not been very available of late and it's outside of my knowledge to work on it.

That's a shame, lost around hours of progress including finishing main quest. Thanks though.

@sam_pokemon As soon as he designs a repair option for this I'm going to be shouting it from rooftops! (also going to show it to Bethesda support so they see that we know why their game is broken)

I'm experiencing this now too in Sanctuary when it tries to go from 0 to 1. I get the screen message that the citizens are making city-wide improvements and I can actually watch the buildings change (I had this first when still playing 3.1.6a and in that, the flyover sequence came and crashed) until roughly 40 seconds in, when it crashes. Updated the mod to 3.2.0 and it still crashes, this time without the flyover sequence

Edit: I tried going to Sanctuary until I saw the imrpovement text, then I left the city again and simply waited. Roughtly three minutes in, came crashed.
