Approaching Sanctuary causes Crash to Desktop

This is my first bug report, so if I need to adjust my post in any way, please tell me and I will glady do so.

I will preface this by saying that I do have two other mods that modify sanctuary (Elianora's Sanctuary Bunker, as well as the Sanctuary Bridge) however they are in places that Sim Settlements - Rise of the Commonwealth doesn't interact with, and I've placed no plots near them manually.

I know Sim Settlements is causing this, because upon loading the game with only Sim Settlements installed, it still causes a crash, however loading with every other mod I have allows me to arrive at Sanctuary unscathed. This happens even if Rise of the Commonwealth and Industrial Revolution is not installed.

My Sanctuary has a supply line to Red Rocket. It is a currently a level 1 city, with virtually complete automation using Rise of the Commonwealth.

I have created a log, but I don't really know what to do short of pasting its entirety here...

TL;DR: Sim Settlements with no other mods causes my game to CTD upon approaching Sanctuary. No other clear criteria.

Are you on 3.0.3b? If not, I very strongly recommend doing the update. KG squished a particularly nasty bug that was causing lag, crashes and other fun times for a good chunk of our userbase. It sounds like you're getting hit with this one too.

In order to not lose your settlement progress, you're going to need to load your settlement into fallrim tools and kill some active processes. There's better instructions than I can write on the forums here: https://simsettlements.com/site/index.php?threads/hotfix-3-0-3b.3396/

This should go a long way towards getting rid of that nonsense.

If you haven't already done so, it may also be useful for you to up the system available to the script engine as well. That information is on the wiki under Performance Tweaks -> INI settings.

Let us know if these fixed the problems for you and if not, there's a few other things we can try to get you back up and going again with all your mods.

Sorry, just for clarification, if I follow the list and I don't have any Sim Settlement-related Active Scripts (I just have "UpdateQuest" and "SurvivalOptions" in ReSaver's Active Scripts folder when I load my save), is that okay? I was actually on Sim Settlements 3.0.2 before updating.

I do have a "simsettlements:simparentscript" under Scripts, and Strings, but not Active Scripts.

Thanks so much for the speedy response, the help is most appreciated :grin

EDIT: Updated the Fallout4Custom.ini to handle scripts better as suggested

Thanks so much kinggath :grin despite the bugs, this is without a doubt the best Fallout 4 mod I've had. For now, I'll just roleplay that I'm in exile from Sanctuary.

Same issue here, constant CTD when facing an area of Sanctuary. Already tried the new update and fixes

@DCFDTL Do you know what level your Sanctuary build is at? This is the most common one causing people issues, so I'm wondering if there's something funky in one level of our design.

I should then add that I'm pretty sure my Sanctuary is at level one, but it may have upgraded since I've been away.

YEah, having the same problem here. My sanctuary is at lvl 2....also, on the map when you mouse over Sanctuary it shows I have 52 settlers there when I actually only have 28.

I have tried a couple of things and found that as long as I don't fast travel to Sanctuary I can walk there from Red Rocket and it won't crash. Also, I have seen in Sanctuary and a couple other settlements..my settlers are just standing around...not doing anything.

I'm playing survival, so fast travel isn't an option to me. I suppose it's worth noting the first time I encountered the bug I was taking a vertibird to Sanctuary, but walking near there every time after still causes a crash. I've just experienced a crash whilst passing by the Red Rocket, nowhere close enough to Sanctuary than before. Haven't interacted with the Settlement system since then, but I occassionally get updates on what the Sanctuary Settlers are doing via the City Manager Quest. Hope this info helps at all!

My sanctuary isn't on city building but red rocket is, not too sure which is the culprit

I get them too, first in Sanctuary, then all around. Did that thing with Fallrim, put everything on low, even the grass, no dice. After a few hours it started crashing everywhere. Sanctuary is lvl 2 with 20 settlers. Playing on survival with Survival Options, maybe gonna try on normal.

Having the same thing, though for me it only happens when I fast travel in. I was able to FT to Red Rocket and walk over though, but framerate wasn't great when I got there. Went straight from 3.0.2 to 3.0.3b and my save sizes haven't grown outrageously, so I don't think it has anything to do with that bug. My Sanctuary is at lv. 2 with 27 pop.

Update: Started a new game on Easy to fiddle with it. 8 hours in, no CTD, had to restart a few times because of stuttering in the usual places. Got Sanctuary at lvl 1, RTS/Abernathy/Castle/Graygarden/Oberland/Zimonja/Tenpines at lvl 0 and Starlight at around 10 settlers with plots. Started doing fast travel to see if it crashes, but got bored after 20 minutes.

Performance options in holotape helps again crashing for me, but sometimes you crash anyways with 20+ settlers and a residental buildning + a commercial/industrial buildning for each settler you got, the engine can't really handle that very well. Doubt there is any way to ever completely solve FO4 from randomly crashing in big settlements, but you can bandaid the problem. Sanctuary is actually extra performance heavy since RR is so close to it, the game loads both workshops if you walk to Sanctuary. For sanity reasons I would suggest to not build large settlements at both RR and Sanctuary in the same playthrough, that really pushes the engine to the dangerzone way faster than normal.

Kinggath had something in store for 3.0.4 aswell but in the end it is the engine that sets the limit for how much the game can handle.

Just to chime in, I’m having same issue with lvl 1. Was fine my first visit after it had been built. Had a look around, went away somewhere else, fast travelled back & CTD happened on multiple tries. Tankthing suggested script kill which I did and it gave me maybe 30secs in Sanctaury before it happened again but still happened. Seems that 37 scripts were running all related to SimSettlements autobuilder. I plan to reload the save and quest away from settlements for a while to allow for catch up but I’m confident that your new patch will resolve it with some more optimisation.

Could any of you with the crash on entering/approaching Sanctuary issue do a few things for me?

1. Upload your save to dropbox.com and send me a link via PM, please include a message that I asked for this - I have a ton of saves in my inbox and I don't want to lose track over which is for what research.
2. Approach Sanctuary as close as you know you can without crashing. Now fast travel somewhere else, then fast travel back to Sanctuary and let me know if the crash still occurs.
3. Test loading your save without any mods at all and see if the crash still happens. Report back either way.

Actually my crash was resolved by terminating 37 hung Autobuilder scripts (then a bit later, subsequent AddOn scripts as previously discussed, also 37, but may not be related as I don't know enough about them). I then quested for a bit before returning. Now it seems to work fine.

Fresh game with 3.0.3b. After awhile i can't fast travel to sanc or anywhere near it. Walked there and i was getting slight FPS loss so i ran plot refresh and it cleared up. Fast traveled away far and then back and its working again. Seems one of the plots for me had a hangup.

Yeah, I crash when ever I fast travel to Sanctuary or even surrounding areas. I also crash when I walk near them and reach a certain point. It's only level 0, never upgraded, Red Rocket has been stuck at 0 aswell, I think it's glitched. But every other settlement is fine. I have upgraded multiple to level 3 at this point, just those nagging first ones.
