Working trains

Would love a plot that put a train maintenance depot in settlements. When you have one in two settlements it sends crew out to clear the railway tracks between them. Then level 2..... Working trains

Could do some kind of quicktravel subway station. Maybe a plot with a door on it that when you click the door, an activator pops up listing all the settlements you have a station in, then plops you at the subway station you select.

If you were feeling really immersive and ambitious you could do an underground station interior cell and just change the exit door to whatever exit is needed.

What railway tracks ? This would be better as an underground network to avoid any outside worldspace issues.

Just use the tracks in the game already. Level 1:Clearing the tracks (in the area)
Level 2:Small working train
Level 3: Full train with space for cargo and settlers to be carried (making smaller settlements have more visitors)

Maybe a easter egg or 2 of people from fallout 3 appear ;)

Just to expand on Ethreon's comment on worldspace issues:

Not all settlements have tracks that run between them. However the biggest problem with this idea is that clearing off the tracks will break the precombine/previs system which is required for performance reasons. There are then basically only 2 options for dealing with it. 1. Sim Settlements has to regenerate new precombine/previs which are very large files and would make the xbox folks pretty unhappy about probably doubling the size of the mod. Sim Settlements then also becomes incompatible with every single other mod that changes worldspace due to how extensive these sorts of changes would be (and the fact that previs changes 9x9 cells). Or 2. Sim Settlements breaks the precombines/previs system and does not regenerate new files for it. This saves mod room on the xbox and doesn't have compatibility issues but performance will tank. FPS in places like downtown would make the game really difficult to play on consoles and low end pcs.

In short, its technically possible but also an extremely bad idea to implement for technical reasons. It's a great creative idea though! If you use the idea of an underground subway, then you're only having stations in a settlement and not worrying about breaking precombines/previs elsewhere.

My plan would of suceded if it wasn't for those pesky pre-combines.

But thank-you for the in depth explanation. It's always good to learn.

There are no clean tracks. As is, tracks are one single mesh with the dirt, the plants and everything.

Ah I didn't realize that, I've never looked at the meshes. Yeah that makes it even worse since someone would have to create an entire rail kit on top of the precombine/previs issue.

But I suspect the idea was more about removing the train cars themselves or any other unrelated debris, I know at least some of them are not part of the rail/ground mesh.

Probably. I do plan on making clean, fixed tracks though, so that could be possibly used.

I keep expecting that one day you'll have re-created the entire game's assets @Ethreon

I think he's secretly making an entire other game inside this one.

Well, at least I can make that even if I won't learn scripting to make my quest mod.

In comparison to what you do every day, scripting would be trivial for you to learn.

If it were more an underground network, this idea would be good for survival. Being able to at least "ride the train" between settlements would be a good way to travel.

Pardon my necro, but does it have to be a train? Why not buses? Or...say, Tier 1 starts out as a caravan station, bringing in a bit of extra scrap and serving as a junk merchant. There might even be a way to tie it into the Salvage Beacon system. Completing a questline sees you recovering something from the Bus Station in Lexington, and then the plots will upgrade to have a repaired (armoured?) bus and offer fast travel.
