Which versions go together?

I just stumbled upon Sim Settlements after getting back into FO4 and am really excited to get started but wanted to tackle it correctly from the get go.

I’ve been browsing the forums, watching King Garth’s videos and reading on the website but might just be missing the easy answer. For a newcomer, should I download base Sim Settlements, Rise of the Commonwealth, Conqueror and Sim #2? Would all of these work together or does #2 include the previous versions / are they all different styles of play?

Would appreciate some help here or direction to where I can find the answer.

SS2 and its add-ons are not compatible with SS1 (also known as regular "Sim Settlements") and its add-ons (including Conqueror). SS2 is a different style of play from SS1 and has a lot of additional game mechanics that were not present in SS1 - the main reason why they are not compatible with each other. If you are on Nexus Mods, you can quickly tell whether a given mod is associated with SS1 or SS2 based on whether it is tagged under the Sim Settlements 2 category or just the Sim Settlements category as that is SS1. You can also check the requirements tab of the modification to see if it requires Sim Settlements (SS1) or Sim Settlements 2.

Thank you!

What would you recommend for someone new to the mod, start with SS1 or jump right into SS2?

Sim Settlements 2. It’s the successor to SS1 with better, updated code and a brand new story/questline for “why should I care about building settlements.” SS1 code runs muuuuch slower, doesn’t have a questline (Conqueror was their first “dip” into that), and isn’t as optimized.

I agree with @veelynnlove - SS2 brings a whole series of quests and storylines into the game. SS1 doesn't, so I would prefer SS2. SS1 is simpler, but as @veelynnlove said not as optimized.
