What settlement do you all use as your quest settlement?

In my own current save, I did use Sanctuary, but I used the quest-skip holotape to 'start' from quest "Where There's Smoke" so I didn't do those early few 'tutorial' bits. Stodge and his crew got Sunshine Tidings.

On the playthroughs where I actually did all of the questline, which has been a while, I usually used Starlight Drive In because it has so much empty space.

And once I finish tweaking this load order and start over again, I'm going to only build in the settlements that already had people living in them before I got there, so most likely Abernathy will be the 'main quest' settlement.

Same here, Starlight is always my quest settlement. Quick to get to and easy to clear. No quest to go on to clear it. And it is an easy one to build being there is a lot of reasonably flat space. Sanctuary takes too much prep work for me to start there.
I find that sending Stodge to Sunshine doesn't seem to break any of his quests. When sending him to the smaller settlements it seems like I always have an issue with setting up the supply agreement. (it could also be something else, but Sunshine works for me.)
 
I use Sanctuary or Red Rocket as my Stranger city. Stodge I like sending to Taffington boathouse.
I love building Red Rocket into a fortress. At some point I need to share my design :D
 
My Sanctuary will never, ever be an SS2 settlement. I prefer the charming banter with the Quincy Five to the obnoxious "No, don't shoot me! (blam blam)" and "They were killed by a flocking molerat!" (insert bad wurd there). Even in a totally happy settlement, they always have something violent going on and complaining mixed in with the cute fluff. And no, turning off ambient sounds doesn't kill it.

I was guided to using Starlight Drive-In as my starter settlement from the kind folk here, and it serves me very well. I have also dared to make Abernathy's and Red Rocket into SS2 settlements even though that's ill advised by most people. I haven't suffered any more crashes than usual, except at rare points where a reload and fast travel gets me through it. Now, to work up the nerve to change the season to winter a few days before Christmas... and marry Curie while I'm at it.
 
i prefer using sanctuary as my base in the early game (and consequently the SS2 story settlement), but late in the game when the HQ becomes more critical, i typical switch over to Jamacia plains. All Settlements Extended makes most of the modeled town into a proper sized settlement space, making it more then suitable for a full sized (20+ person) SS2 settlement with enough area left over for a big player living space (i.e. crating, beds, and storage, etc).

i will frequently leave Red Rocket empty, or even salvage away everything from that settlement to avoid the triagle of doom, since both Abernathy and sanctuary both have more interesting narratives and building spaces.
 
I use Sanctuary as the quest hub. Stodge and his crew I've sent to Hangman's Alley in the two playthroughs I've done so far. Not sure why.

Maybie Stodge reminds you of Handcock? Or to snub the Mayor by having a prosperous settlement run by a ghoul under his nose? :P

I never build there, and have lately used console commands to put a BoS patrol there (after the Prydwen arrives): A scribe and two soldiers (not with power armor), a couple chairs, and a radio. The patrol sandboxes and makes the place not look so empty. It increases immersion for me and they occasionally engage enemies coming over the hill to the north.

I tried it once with Railroad agents but they kept attacking my provisioners, bastards.
