that's a mod I need. I wondered why my settlers are so dirty. it turns out they are having imaginary showers with their clothes on.
 
too true!

after all the novelty, I make a preset that is most compatible with the gear I like the characters to wear in game, reduces clipping / holes but still meets some other more aesthetic requirements.

This basically finishes everything I consider "essential". Anything else is simply window dressing.
 
Impressed with Heather Casdin, but i'm not so sure about Ellen the Cartographer yet...early on, but she seems a bit boring. For weapons I've been pretty happy with the M1 Garand & the 10mm SMG along with Tumbajamba's gauss rifle replacer cause i always hated the look of the stock one.

Finally i recently picked up traits and more perks. Adds new craftable perks & many of the traits from the earlier FO games.
 
Brygo, IMHO Heather is hard to top as a follower. Ellen is good and does have a legitimately interesting story if you take it to the end. The only other companion mod that is on par to Heather is called Ivy. This companion is not as you said "boring". If you are in anyway easily offended "By Anything" or have folks in your home who could be offended then please stop reading... please I am not kidding! If you are younger than 18 stop reading or below the age in which this is tolerated in the country you are in, stop reading. But, if you get bored, you are an adult and can find adult content somewhat entertaining even if it is completely over the top and want a premium companion mod: then, go to the other site. I recommend the 4.0 version. There is enough information here for you to google but for the sake of being considerate of others, I will not be more specific.

Heather is a great companion, but not essential. You'll see her in the video tours I make for my city plans.
Ellen - seems OK - but not one that I have in my load order,
Ivy. Oh boy. On a technical level - it's rather well done. It's just not my cup of tea.
 
I agree. Wish it was not so... you know?

But, I have to respect the technical accomplishment of what it took to make something like that, that being reason I bought it up. Likely, not such a great Idea to mention it here now that I think about it.

The mod does have settings that can take it down a few notches.

I might give Ellen and Heather a burl one day - currently there's a metric ton of stuff still to do in this game.

From what you've said, I won't bother googling for Ivy. :)

Heather is my all time favorite companion, vanilla or mod. You really can't go wrong with her. The Ellen mod I used a long while back and enjoyed her but that was pre-heather. I have also heard she hasn't been updated in a long while so I can't vouch for her compatibility with other mods anymore.

I also agree with Yagisan, Heather is not essential but IMHO still the best companion mod out there. Frankly, no companion mod is essential when putting them side to side with F4SE, MCM, Place Everywhere and the like. But, I try almost all of them anyway.
