Very LARGE (108 settler) Sanctuary

This was done in homage to @kinggath and all the addon authors providing content. I set out to make a stable large scale settlement with all the trimmings. It works. All settlements are primary Sim Settlements and there's a lot of building that has been done in this save.

No warranty of any kind, this thing is large by this game's standards and frequently crashes to desktop when attempting to load in. Best suggestion I can give is teleport to the cabin just southwest of Sanctuary and walk north slowly.

Save file is included at the bottom after the load order if you want to go walk around, the game has only been progressed to Diamond City, though I've got largish more conventional settlements at other places around Boston including the Castle, Oberland, I think Finch and Abernathy. Several other settlements have been discovered but are not yet being built out.

Yes, it's double what Kinggath suggests in the optimization wiki. If you don't double it, you get major issues very quickly with settlers not doing stuff. It can take 1-3 minutes to assign settlers as it is in very large settlements (which this is)

Some differences of note between the screenshots which are from a slightly older version to the one in the save:
  • Some cosmetic work has been completed around the pond to add additional seating for settler herding activities
  • Some issues with plot assignment have been addressed and most plots are at least level 2 now
  • I somehow broke the distributed herding behavior to the nearest bar, they all like to cluster at the same bar now for some reason.
  • I took the BYOP tiles out of the pool to save framerate. The settlers never use the thing anyway even if I spam it with recreation point markers
  • It's not fully decorated yet, definitely a work in progress
  • Tweaked water production and security assignment
  • Found and assigned 2 settlers that weren't doing anything useful after I'd taken the settlement screens but before I pulled the summary information
If the settlers get stuck standing around, use console command tai to turn off the settler AI, wait 2 realtime minutes, then turn it back on. If they're still standing around, walk up and let them say their little blurb to you, then they should go about their business.

This includes my castle from earlier posts, a bonus lair WIP on Spectacle island, the Finch Farm overpass transfer settlement from my previous game and lots of other goodies.

If you've downloaded the save and done much digging, you're asking yourself how I managed to get Covenant as a settlement without needing to kill anybody but wiping out the boil on the face of humanity that lived in the sewer pipe. Just pretend I replaced everybody with a synth lookalike.

I didn't have the heart to permanently murder those people in cold blood so I temporarily murdered them in cold blood, took the settlement, then used console commands to make them assignable, assign them to the settlement, resurrect, recycleactor and I just leave them alone now. Eventually it'll be Fort Covenant with better walls and moar guns, but for now it's pretty close to vanilla.

Deezer and the cat are the only two that haven't been multi-murdered repeatedly until I got the factions on the actors right (ish).

Edit: Recycleactor because when hit at close range by the Gauss weapons Piper and my character currently have, there is very little left over that is recognizably human.

Codsworth, Piper and Preston are at max affinity because they like it when placing settlement objects... Strong is at max affinity because I spent so much time killing and eating super mutants that I think my character was starting to get fat. Strong is at Home Plate because it amuses me to have a supermutant guard on all the legendaries I have stored there.

All supply lines are to/from the Mechanist's lair via pink painted automatron to keep the robot population in the settlements down and happiness up. Jezebel's in sanctuary because I accidently killed her a few times before I figured out that pink is a good color for caravaners and I got tired of resurrecting her mopey butt. She's a farmer now and seems about as content as she gets so I'm leaving her alone.

No cows were harmed in the making of this production.

Anyone use that mod "Peaceful Solution" for Covenant to complete the quest and save the girl, without killing everyone?

John

I looked at it and decided rather than load yet another mod into a game with over 200 of them already there that I'd simply figure it out, it more or less works and, while unassignable, I don't have to permakill people who were raising their own concerns to their group that what they were doing was very unethical. I figure they'll straighten out in time.

It's kind of dumb how much effort I put into saving what are in reality just a bunch of pixels on a computer screen but chalk it up to being a gentle soul who really didn't like any of the game outcomes presented so I rolled my own.

That is nothing short of amazing.

I am using All Settlements Extended, which means that Red Rocket and Sanctuary share a border.

I have 36 settlers on each, which is nowhere near your 108 in Sanctuary alone in terms of settlers/jobs/shelter clustered together, and although I do not get CTDs my fps halves when I'm in the area, from 60 (got it capped at that) to 30-35.

Out of sheer curiosity, what are the specs of your rig?

I have a 4790K, a 1080Ti and 32GB of RAM and I don't see myself getting anywhere near that density with playable fps.

The wiki offers some performance enhancements to help this along, I simply doubled the numbers suggested. This settlement ended up capping out at around 115, I don't dare take it any higher.

Your system would probably be able to run this given the same tweaks I'm using to the configs.

Motherboard:
CPU Type QuadCore Intel Core i7-6700K, 4000 MHz (40 x 100)
Motherboard Name Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 (4 PCI-E x1, 3 PCI-E x16, 2 M.2, 4 DDR4 DIMM, Audio, Video, Dual Gigabit LAN)
Motherboard Chipset Intel Sunrise Point Z170, Intel Skylake-S
System Memory 32722 MB (DDR4 SDRAM)

Display:
Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (8 G:cool:
3D Accelerator nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080
Monitor Dell 3008WFP (DisplayPort) [30" H-IPS LCD] (G501H079782L)
Monitor Generic PnP Monitor [NoDB]

CPU Cooler is Corsair h115i closed loop water cooler
Video card is actually a Gigabyte GeForce® GTX 1080 Xtreme Gaming Waterforce which has a factory integrated closed loop water cooler.

I went closed loop water because I wanted the peace and quiet water cooling gives and didn't want to fuss with open loops or potential leaks. I am not currently overclocking but I've had it up to 4.3ghz stable.

Case is a Corsair Air 540 so lots of airflow. Picture taken before one of the pairs of memory sticks went stupid, I actually had 64gb of memory at the time this was taken.

Nice looking rig.

Maybe I am being over-ambitious with the graphics settings, will have to play around I guess. Will definitely give your papyrus values a shot too. I am not as ambitious as you; 30-35 settlers per settlement are enough to have colour and variety (and productive jobs.) However I would just love to arrive to a settlement without a massive fps drop.

Said that when it comes to settlements it is pretty CPU intensive and yours certainly has an edge over mine.

I too have an AiO on the CPU but the GPU is left with the stock air cooler (is not a founder's edition, is the MSI Gaming X so is pretty decent.)

My rig is in the basement (I run the keyboard, mouse, display etc cables through the floor); noise not being a concern at all is on a bench table with 180mm fans blowing through at full speed.

I used to watercool everything (MCP, CPU, GPU(s)... even RAM in my last build) and it was fun to do but I no longer have enough disposable income to cover such expenses. I have kept some toys from those days - nostalgia and the fact that they don't resell very well (a Watercool.de 480x480mm rad, a Iwaki RD30 with Japanese motor... even an original Storm CPU waterblock by Cathar before he sold the stuff to Swiftech, hey maybe that will be worth something in auction one day :D )

Nice rig.

Question - you may be running that many settlers, but what other mods are you running? Any environmental mods such as conifers, regrowth, grass, etc...

Interestingly, my fps took a hit not with these, but with the installation of the mods for clothing, armors, body slides, better settlers, etc...

Alone, I don't think SS hits fps that much, even though I am down in the 20 to 30s fps with a settlement. It seems the culmination of mods affects fps together.

John

EDIT - I scrolled up and saw your LO... I generally run at the 255 mark.

My mod list for that save is pasted verbatim. I found I wasn't using anything other than the nano suit so I disabled all the other stuff.

I also use a scouter or augmented sunglasses so I have a HUD without needing to pay gobs of money for power sources for power armor all the darned time.

I use Body Slide, Better settlers and a few other settler mods because I'm a huge settlement freak and when they all look like generic raider #19, it's kind of boring.

As for load orders, they change all the time. Most of my stuff is settlement related but there's a few quality of life and other goodies... CBBE because if I am going to be looking at a butt in game for the entire time I am playing, I may as well enjoy the view.

Edit: If you really want to go walking through that settlement, just back up your papyrus.ini, throw my optimizations in there instead and load up anything missing between my load order and yours. You're going to want at least snappy housekits, byop, homemaker, SOE and SSEX, and build it yourshelf.

Make SURE that clean sanctuary is in there so the island is clean and Neeher's expansion is also available. I also used a bridge replacer to clean up the sanc bridge a little bit.

Teleport to the little shack just south of sanctuary, probably need to kill the bugs when you port in, then you can toggle ai off, wait a minute, toggle it back on and then move slowly towards sanc, as soon as it starts to load in, stop and let it finish loading. Move forward slowly again and stop when it starts loading more stuff. Rinse and repeat until you actually get there or your game crashes.

In the same save, go take a peek at the Castle and my first stab at an unfinished secret underground lair on Spectacle island. Finch farm has a building made almost entirely out of greenhouse walls on the bridge with a bunch of sim settlement plots inside it and I honestly don't remember what else is built up in that save.

:<3: Love it. And the instructions on how to approach if trying out your save are both frightening and hilarious.

My games frequently go psychotic starting roughly an hour into a new game. I've got several helper batfiles in place to handle quickstarting settlements so I frequently load up a fresh new world in a save established during my sane phase, then spawn in a bunch of building supplies and proceed with my next concept or insane experiment (or both simultaneously.)

That outpost up north looks like it could use a 50 settler apartment building with an open courtyard instead of the hovel and slight depression it defaults to and I REALLY want to see if I can assign Preston to an invisible action mat hovering in midair and see if I can make him launch himself with a junk launcher, a proximity sensor and a time delay switch.

How did you get your population past 100? Mine locks at 21-3.

I'm not sure how the OP did it however I do it using Mytigio's Industrial City - http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/23948/?

It adds a new recruitment method using an industrial plot (Dispatcher, which spawns from Scavver Support) which will keep recruiting as long as there are houses and jobs available.

The charisma bonus will affect how 'fast' it recruits rather than setting a hard cap as in the vanilla game.

It will also allow you to choose whether you want to 'recruit' brahmin or not.

Vanilla + Scav Dispatcher plus forgetting and leaving them on plus a lot of preplaced plots plus bumping charisma up to 100.
