Stuck Garvey questline

Hoping to see if anyone knows what might cause this issue. Just cleared covega for tenpines & have gone back to garvey to let him know. The "1st step quest" will complete, he'll promote me to General & then i believe he should tell me of another settlement to go wipe ass for, but he just asks if there's anything else i need & it goes into convo tree with the follow command since he becomes available halfway thru the conversation.

Does he not always send me off on an immediate quest & I'm just so used to "another settlement needs our help" that it's got me paranoid or is something interfering with the next step?

Do you have We are the minutemen installed? It adds cooldown to the radiant quests, like it should've been.

No he should start the conversation as soon as you tell him your finished the tenpines quest. I remember this being an issue back from ss1 but not sure I’ve had it on ss2 at all.

I do have WATM installed, but i wasn't sure if this was actually considered a radiant & it's never done this before. I've tried multiple reloads right before talking to preston, but they were all from when i was already in sanctuary. Guess i'll trying loading one even older & see what happens.

IIRC, with WATM installed, if there is a settlement that has a MM radiant quest giver (generic ones, not unique like the Abernathy locket) you have to find that quest giver and complete the quest before Preston will give you a quest. It is for this reason that I do not put WATM in my load order until I have finished the Castle quests on a MM run.

Hmmm. All i have is tenpines, abernathy, & Sanctuary at the moment & the only generic settlers i have are in sanctuary that SS2 dropped on me. I can go around & talk to them just in case.

It could also be a settlement with existing settlers like Greentop, Oberland, County Crossing, Sommerville or Nordhagen.

so even a place i haven't run into yet can have a settler waiting to give me a quest that hangs preston? Would temporarily disabling WATM allow me to complete his questline properly then re-enabling or is that a fool's hope?

EDIT: Nope, turned off WATM & as the convo goes on & about the time garvey calls me general he just starts walking off & I have to follow behind. so whatever is borked, temp removing watm won't cut it.

Think what hes saying is you need to go do a quest for a settlement that has settlers already. When you walk up on overland station one of the two ladies will give you a quest to clear some raiders out for backstreet apparel. You can get this quest 2 ways one is a radiant quest from either Preston or radio freedom the other is by going there your self and talking to them.

so for watm you need to go do a quest for a settlement by finding the settlement then completing the quest given to you. Then return to Preston and talk to him. That’s my understanding anyways Also i tend to not use watm or the other mm mods cause they can screw the main games quests if you are a mm play through fan. Militarized minutemen wasn’t to bad but my understanding is it hasn’t been updated for a while so idk how it would work now days.

Is that quest given by those two living there even Radiant? It seems to ALWAYS be Back Street Apparel. Or is it just coincidence that that 'dungeon' is coded to work out to about when you would be getting to Oberland 'level-wise' etc?

I think it depends on if you have cleared the backstreet location before going to them. But I think if it’s precleared they just give the reward and unlock the settlement. So I guess they are not a radiant , same with greygarden and I think country crossing is having cleared the national training yard.

IIRC, these radiants look for the closest enemy X location that is not cleared.

I'm having a similar problem. I went to Tenpines and cleared Corvega. I get the prompt from Tenpines to head back to Garvey. He gives me the bit about becoming a general and starts the next quest but then his dialogue keeps repeating. "Do you want to be the general?" basically. I have 6 settlements under my belt so moving on to the Castle should have already started. On this playthrough nothing is different other than I swapped out SS for SS2 before starting over. Any ideas?
