Settlers randomly losing assignments

Since the last major update (2.0.3), every time I travel back to a settlement I've built up, one settler at random will have 'lost' one of their assignments - either Home, Job, or Hobby. This is Great(tm) since it means something will now be short.

Has anyone else seen this? I have no idea what could've caused this to start happening, it was fine before. I have all auto-assign functionality turned off.

EDIT TO SAVE YOU READING THE ENTIRE THREAD:
At this point I am 99% sure it is nothing to do with the Disease system, and believe it to be an issue of Settlers temporarily losing even which settlement they belong to and losing an assignment in the process. Testing continues.

I had it happen with the new update but I had added a mod, I thought might be causing it. I started a new game without that mod. I will let you know if I have the problem again. I just started so not enough settlements/settlers to know yet.

This has been happening a while - no one really knows what causes it.
Though I know Pack Attack Mod is a major contributor if you don't download the patch

But even without it - it still happens but less often

I've had some annoyances with assignments too that I've never quite figured out. When I returned to Sanctuary last night, I was wondering why so many of the settlers had diseases. Then I realized it had re-assigned the settler from the hospital to an industrial plot...

Hmm, alright. It'd never happened for me before that I'd noticed (and with how micromanagement-intensive I play, I'd think I'd spot something like that pretty quick).

I'm not using any mods now that I'd never used before, either... although I've started getting the "everyone in a settlement has who actually gets the Vendor Dialog randomly assigned" issue too since updating to 2.0.3...

This keeps happening at the moment with my Abernathy Farm settlement. I have a 3x3 farm plot with 2 farmers assigned, and one of my guards keeps getting assigned as the 3rd farmer. I have a vague recollection of something that might prioritize food production?

There may be multiple issues at play here then, since as I said, I have autoassign turned off entirely (at least as turned off as you CAN, people still get autoassigned when they first join a settlement no matter your settings) - and since I manual build everything only as needed, there isn't any other plot for them to be getting moved to for me; they just get removed from something.
Example: My last trip back to Tenpines, the Caravaneer kept her Home and Job assignments, but dropped her Rec Plot assignment - there is only one Rec Plot in that settlement, and it's not a multi-person one, thus it was left empty... so Happiness started dropping.

I can't see any common factor to what's causing it or who it happens to; I can't even say with certainty that it's happening on "arrive in settlement".

I'm also getting the unassignment issue, I can't find any pattern to it.-
  • Happens to both SS2 named settlers and random settlers.
  • It doesn't happen every time I go to a settlement, thankfully. Seems totally random in that regard.
  • I've noticed, however, that it can happen when I'm outside a settlement. Out in the world, I noticed a supply line had dropped on my map. When I went to the settlement in question, I found that the caraveneer had quit his job.
  • Settlers that get unassigned aren't necessarily reassigning themselves to something else; they're just unassigned.
  • Someone mentioned Pack Attack earlier. I'm not running that mod but there could be some other conflict.
  • This is v.2.0.3.

Further to my earlier post, On three consecutive visits to Sanctuary now, every single time the settler assigned to the hospital has been unassigned. And not assigned to anything else, as there are now no other jobs available. I have to re-assign him every time!

An extra note myself: I just spotted someone in HQ with the red icon of "no assignment" in build mode - normally everyone in there gets the green one. The guy was still showing as in the Science Department in that menu, though...
It was a generic Settler too, not a ss2 unique or any other mod. I thought it might be a Uniques thing, since Alex Powell drops his Farm assignment every time I go back to Starlight, and Sheffield apparently doesnt like his level 3 Residential.

Additionally, both Katie Powell (Municipal Power) and Franklin (Commercial: his own unique shop) have "vendor barks" for being book sellers every time I pass through Starlight, despite neither having ever been assigned to a Bookstore.

Something is very off about a lot of the vendor barks and dialogue - basically everybody's dialogue is the armor store in my current playthrough. I think this might be a case of SS2 leveraging the vanilla vendor code and it not being up to the task - like putting jet engines on roller skates.

A random observation - I swear I saw multiple people lose then re-gain their assignments when I travelled back to a settlement and entered Build Mode as soon as it let me. Maybe it's some sort of 'slightly more script lag at the exact wrong time makes it forget half of that process' thing going on?

I'd never noticed it being this bad until that current "real" playthrough. To be totally honest, if there was a way to turn off the "Vendor Barks", I would.

Well, I'm happy to see I'm not the only one experiencing these issues (it's the old "misery loves company" thing XD). Every time I've left Sanctuary and return I'm constantly having to reassign people to housing and jobs. It got to the point I was so irritated I was ready to deinstall SS2 and go back to vanilla builds early last week. And this is early in my game, Sanctuary is the only settlement I've been working on. I usually stick to building 3 at a time (placed in different parts of the Commonwealth)--what a headache if this is going to happen at all of them.

This feels like the kind of glitch that's never going to be fixed until we figure out everything short of compiling new code ourselves, so I've been trying to narrow down what the issue actually is.

It doesn't even happen 100% of the time, though, so it's got me totally stumped.

Could the more advanced sicknesses get in the way of assignments? I vaguely remember a text box about « incapacitated » settlers as part as the sickness system introduction.

Hm, worth checking, but I have "incapacitation" turned off in the settings.
Wouldnt be the first time the check for something being disabled was done AFTER the effects of it...

Alright, Disease doesn't appear to be the factor. It's triggering on people that the Vitomatic reports as not having any diseases, and there's a roughly even spread of people with and without any in all the settlements in that save but it isnt happening to everyone every single time, so I'm confident that's not it.

Yes, I have observed this now too but as you mentioned it does not happen 100% of the time. It's like each time I come back to a settlement between 1-3 settlers have reassigned themselves. It seems to happen less when auto-assignment is OFF, but I can't even be completely sure of that as I've only been trying to check this for a few days.
