Sanctuary, and the questions within.

Hi there, I'm relatively new to SS and I've gone over all the guides and videos but there are some basic aspects that are eluding me. For instance, I let the system set up Sanctuary and it built this incredible city however it seems to have stopped and won't upgrade.

I know it won't upgrade because of the happiness. I see that they need some basics like additional housing and the triangle icon. How do I help the city along even though it's prebuilt? Find an empty street and slap a bed on it?

Any advice would be greatly welcomed. I'd ask such a simple question in a discord but it seems we're without one so I'll ask here!

It'll just take time. As settlers move in they will build their own places, like bars and recreational spots, that will improve happiness, when enough is there it should start upgrading on its own.

If you already have a lot of settlers and they just arent happy, try to find the city planner desk, and pop in as much beer and drugs as you can find for a happiness boost. There might be some residential plots with a little extra room for a couple sleeping bags if that's your only problem.

That's what I did, anyway. If you have enough city limit to work with, you can build a little more in some empty space and build a little yourself to suppliment what's going on in the main part.. at least until it upgrades and see if it can handle itself. But it -should- be able to upgrade on its own with little help from you.

The beer and drugs worked! That's an odd sentence.. I also tried refreshing the plots and that seems to have fixed the bedding issue. Though in my main city, outside of Sanctuary in the Starlight Drive-In, the happiness seems to bounce up and down. Is that normal? Thank you so much Texas :)

I havent figured out why it flucuates, My best guess is that its the math. Because say just for sake of easy understanding, your city generates 1000 happiness to spread around ten settlers. That's a hundred each right, its paradise. Five settlers move in. .. hmm. You didnt invite them, illegal immigration and what not, and now those ten have to share what they have with 50% more people.

Not as much happy to go around. 10 people are less happy, but five are more happy. But now, everyone gets about 67 happy about living in town. You see its going down, and toss down something to add more happy, so it goes up again. Or maybe you gave them some jet. Jet is temporary, so it'll go up a little while then back down again...

Those arent really the right numbers but the concept is the same. Someone moves into a balanced system, it throws it off to pay for their life. The death of a settler, or failing to defend a settlement will also make them unhappy for a while. Lots of things can factor in.

Also the time spent in a settlement. Sometimes if you just run into a settlement, look around real quick, then run out, you might not have given all the proper scripts enough time to run, which means some things aren't being calculated correctly.
