I use the start me over mod and so far it's been ok. I am writing her biography so I play and then when I quit I write down her story. We aren't very far but it's fun.
I have a couple of characters, but Fred is the one I decided to give a story too. The only things I know for sure is she will join the Minutemen and try to help those who need it.
Character Name: Fred
Character Gender: Female
Motivation: She's a helper, an optimist and a survivor
My name is Winnifred, mom had a thing for musicals and named me after "Princess Winnifred the Woebegone" and called me Winni. My friends, of course, called me Fred. Right now Woebegone seems sort of accurate and I'm keeping this diary to remind myself of my past and I don't know, some kind of message for the future. Or maybe I just like to write, it helps me focus.
When I was 29 I was frozen for over 200 years along with some of my neighbors from Sanctuary. Good ol' Vault 111 "The way of the future" That's what the sales man said, I guess he was right. I could guess my current age. <slight smile> but I won't.
Turns out it was an experiment They told us we needed to step into the decontamination chamber and then we would be given a tour. We were all so scared and worried and these people gave us something to cling to so we did what they said, and the world went away.
I woke up twice. First time I thought I was dreaming as I watched one of my neighbors, Nate get shot, his son taken from him, and a man looking at me. He said something, not sure what. I may remember someday and I'll find him.
I liked Nora and Nate. We double dated a few times and after their son was born, Nora asked me to stay with him while she ran to her office for something. They were looking forward to watching him grow up, maybe giving him a sister. We were all looking forward to something.
Then I woke up to alarms going off and a voice saying something was wrong and everyone was to evacuate. Falling as the door to my cell opened, I staggered down the hall and through the first door that opened. It was a nightmare.
Some doors were locked, some were open and I found a computer terminal that gave me some information including one that said my "unit" was switched with Nora's and I found that I was the only survivor in this cluster fuck vault experiment because of a mixup. I should have died but she did. Nora's 3 month old son also survived and I spent many years looking for him. A story for a later.
While I was trying to find my way out. I also found giant roaches. Having cockroaches attach you is disturbing to say the least, but you can still stomp on them, or shoot them. And I later found they taste like chicken if cooked, a joke mom used to tell me about frog legs which turned out to be true, at least with roaches.
I'm not sure the workers even knew what was going on, or maybe I'm just hoping they didn't all know. I found the office for the guy in charge, the "Overseer" and a locked door. This Overseer, he knew what was being done and I'm glad he's dead. His computer had information about this vault and a way to open the door.
It felt like hours before I found the Overseer's office. I read his files, found a 10mm pistol with ammo that still worked and some other useful things, opened the exit and made it to the entrance where I could activate the door out of this nightmare. Of course, I had to search one of the skeletons to find the key for everything to work. A pip boy, very cool and very useful. So I used it, and escaped to the world outside. I didn't really care if I'd survive whatever was left, Dying was no longer a great fear, thinking about being put back in that unit would forever be my greatest fear.
Walking out of the vault, it was a bright, beautiful day. Sunlight, blue sky and fluffy white clouds. Then I noticed the skeletons, the rusted cars and trucks, the trees and I saw my home town Sanctuary at the bottom of the hill. What was left of it.
I thought of my family, mom, dad and George, our dog, leaving to visit his sister, what to me was just a few days ago, the neighbors I had passed at the gates, Nate and Nora, their baby Shawn, Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield, our next door neighbors, they were always out in their back yard, he'd be grilling and she would be working in their garden. Mr. Russell, he was the "get of my lawn" guy. But on Halloween his house was the one kids wanted to go to because he gave out the best treats. And the loss hit me. I just sat on the ground, the tears, the fear, the longing all mixed up with the guilt that I had survived. That I would never see any of them again.
I'm not sure how long I sat there, but the sun was starting to go down and I knew I needed to find shelter and hopefully something to eat and drink. From the hill I could see some of the houses were still upright and remembered one of the neighbors had put in a cellar, maybe someone was down there somewhere.
Walking into the neighborhood was a bit surreal. Our home was destroyed but across the street some of them were still standing. I knew I had to be careful, so I did the things I had been taught in, of all things, my RPG gamer club and some other hobbies I had participated in for the last 15 years or so. I had my pistol and the security baton and I knew how to be quiet. There was still light but I wanted shelter before it got dark.
The first house I approached had a rusted out car in the drive and a suitcase sitting on it that was still holding together, a good advertisement slogan "the suitcase that will last thru the nuclear explosions". I have actually found quite a few things that survived, some caned and dried food, even some clothing, which isn't really a surprise. My mom and I used to go to the history museum where they had clothing from 1800's.
The house had a lot of damaged items, but the roof looked like it had been fixed at one time so I felt that I should keep looking and see what might be useful. When I left the house I heard a noise that sounded familiar but it took me a few minuets, to realize it was some kind of motor or lawn trimmer.
Carefully I moved towards the noise, because yeah, I watched the shows where the person runs towards something and dies. CODSWORTH, Codsworth was there in front of Nora's house trimming their hedge. Codsworth, was a Mister Handy Butler Nick and Nora had purchased right after Shawn had been born. He was amazing and I had wanted one. Now he was still here and I needed to know if he was broken or could help and there was one way of finding out.
"Codsoworth your still here." He looked over at me and I swear his eyes lit up. "Miss Nora, it's really you" Well, he was still able to talk, but it sounded like he had a few wires damaged. But even though he thought I was Nora, he was helpful. We talked for quite awhile. Can machines get depressed, I think so.
He had been trying to keep things in shape so roofs were patched and he kept most of the creatures under control with his built in buzz saw and flamer. He told me there were people in Concord, just a few miles from here. He said they "only pummeled him with sticks a few times or shot at him occasionally so he came back here". He thought I should check it out and he would stay here and clean up a bit. But first I had to gather some supplies and he was very helpful with that.
When I was ready I headed out towards Concord. Just outside of Sanctuary I found a dead body and a dead dog. I felt bad, but I took everything the guy had with him and the tire iron he used to kill the dog. When I come back, I'll have Codsworth help me bury him in the grave yard behind one of the damaged houses.
Red Rocket Gas Station, still standing and bringing back so many memories. Dated a guy when I was 19 who had worked here. So many emotions running through my heart, I wasn't sure I would make it to Concord.
It was quiet, just a few chickens wondering around and then I saw him. He was so good looking and I missed George so much. He looked over at me and gave me the best grin I've ever seen. Yes, he was a dog, he had to have some German shepherd in him and his tail waged as I bent down to talk to him.
"Hi boy, what are you doing out here all by yourself". I don't care what you think, he understood me and we had a connection, we were now a team. I checked out the gas station, found some useful items and a computer that still worked, sort of. It had some information about something dangerous under ground but didn't give details. And I found an unsigned note about my new companion. Said he was a great dog called Dogmeat. What kind of a name is that for this handsome fella. I called him Butch after my FWB another memory, another possibility lost in time. He waged his tale and seemed to agree this was a good name.
I was ready to continue on, when Butch started growling. Suddenly there were these giant moles popping out of the ground. I was so busy shooting I lost track of how many there were, but between us we finished them off. Butch decided he was hungry and while I wasn't sure about eating a giant radioactive mole, I was hungry so I made a fire and it tasted ok and I didn't get sick. A roof over my head and a companion who didn't tell me what to do. Maybe things were looking up.
