[Question] Issue With Texture Replacers

First of all, I use Vortex.

I'm having some rather interesting issues with some of my texture replacing mods. I have a handful of them, and there's some overwrites, but they've been working fine for me up until my current playthrough. I do not have the Official HD Texture pack, and my game is set to run on Ultra by default. Basically, my textures are coming and going intermittently. It hasn't affected my character, but some NPC faces (Not Brown Face) seem to have been lower resolution (Mags in NW for example). There is a cabinet at the doctor's shop in Diamond City that, without changing anything, I have seen load in both with a replacer, and without one.

This all seems... impossible? I'm hoping someone can offer some advice cause otherwise I'm afraid I might be losing my mind.

Are these replacers running as loose files or BA2 archives? What mod manager are you using?

My initial though is that there is too many loose files and especially around DC they are having a problem to load, alternatively it could be related to a BA2 file being too big too load.

Also do you have your FalloutCustom.ini setup for modding? Did you recently reinstall or verify your game installation?

I use Vortex as my manager. I believe I need some clarification on BA2 vs. Loose files. Is that basically the difference between .esm and .esl, respectfully?

I believe my FalloutCustom.ini is setup properly, but I'm away from my desk and headed to bed shortly. Any chance you could tell me what it needs to be set as? In case things have changed over the years?

I'm going to verify installation in the morning, thought that'd be worth a shot.

BA2 is compressed textures files. Loose files means the Textures and Meshes are stored as actual loose files on your hard drive. Loose files don't require and ESP or ESL and even some mod authors will bundle assets as loose file with an ESP or ESL

In Vortex, click on the gear next to action, enable content and in the content filter you can filter by Textures and Meshes to get an idea of which mods use loose files.

You can get more info about enabling modding here

The BRB guide mentioned above is also a good method if you use large texture packs and not the HD DLC.

I am assuming your not using HD DLC? It will make most texture packs on the nexus unnecessary.

Alright, I spent a significant amount of time today trying to figure this out, and track down the root cause of my issues. Still not 100% sure. At current time, I've ended up uninstalling all of my texture mods and I'm pretty confident I've gotten everything out of the game at this point after running around for awhile. Game seems stable.

I did have my ini configured properly.

I tried to play around with the BRB guide, but I don't have enough space on my disk to make it work properly, it seems. With the base repacks and the quality one it needs more than 40GB which about all my C drive has.

TL;DR: Things aren't changing their quality anymore, the whole game just looks bad.

At this point, especially with the changes I've made over the last week or so, I'd probably need to clean-install FO4 and clear my Vortex folders to free up some space. I'm just not 100% sure what I can and cannot get rid of at this point, unfortunately.

Progress at least.

Feel free to post your mod list (Not Plugins/Load Order) and I am happy to give some suggestions?

You don't need to reinstall FO4. Do a purge in Vortex without re-deploying which will remove all our mods from it. Then do a Verify Game in steam to reset your game folder to vanilla as well as your INI files. (Backup your INI files before doing this)

Do you have a second HDD? If so move the Vortex downloads folder to that. It doesn't need to be on the same drive as the game, only the staging folder.

Lastly if you have a big external HDD you can use that for the BRB guide although it may be slower if not USB3.
