Question Power Tool Issues

I have a few questions/issues with the use of the Power Tool menu that is accessed from a settlement workbench. I'm curious to see if these are issues I'm just having or if it's replicated by others.
  • When I use the Rebuild Power Grid / Wiring and Remove Wire options, a popup comes up that says the game will save. Except the game doesn't save. Is this because I am running survival mode or is it just broken? If it's because of survival, can WSFW be updated to bypass the survival save limitation?
  • Also, when I use the Remove Wire option, the popup says that I am supposed to be put into workshop mode, but that doesn't happen, unlike the Rebuild Power Grid option. Is the popup description wrong and workshop mode is not required or is it broken?
  • The Destroy Grid option doesn't seem to work consistently for me compared to the Destroy Grid option under the MCM menu. Is the code different between these two Destroy Grid options or is it broken? It could just be me but when I use the option from the Power Tool menu, it doesn't seem to destroy the grid.

Has anyone else run into any of these issues? Shouldn't the Remove Wire option also have a progress bar to see how far it is in removing the wires?

1) I had this issue as well. After investigating, I found the cause and notified Kinggath. It should be fixed in the next WSFW update.

2) I do not believe WS mode is required for the remove wires function. Most likely one generic message is being used for all the options. There are some consistency issues with the descriptions, but the underlying functions work as intended.

3) There should be no difference whether you activate from the workbench or MCM. They call the same functions.

I thought that was happening as well but it turned out that I just had to wait a really, really long time before the workshop opened.

When I use the Rebuild Power Grid / Wiring or just the remove wires option the game crashes while removing wires sometimes but will eventually work if I just reload and try again without making any changes. I thought I knew why but it was a coincidence and I'm not sure if it matters how things are wired up. Perhaps it's related to manufacturing from the contraptions DLC since that's what I'm testing. I'm going to make a Sanctuary transfer settlement blueprint and/or a layout to test with to see if I can reproduce in a new game without any unnecessary mods.

Did you ever have any luck tracking what caused the crash when rebuilding the power grid? I'm on crash 9 attempting to rebuild Abernathy today, it succeeded yesterday after 2 crashes before promptly breaking and needing fixed again today.

Nope, I just save the game before using the destroy power grid option and then using the rebuild option. Sometimes it works and sometimes it crashes. I haven't done a test yet with the minimal mods to export a layout and a new game save to see if it still crashes. It does seem that the larger the grid the more likely it crashes though. I use buffout 4 and even tried using buffout with the memory manager disabled + baka and that didn't make any difference. After reloading just wait a minute to make sure the startup scripts all finish.

Also, I disabled the auto rebuild and auto-destroy options in workshop plus and also in Transfer Settlements and even the clear weather option in workshop plus but that making any difference might be more superstition than useful. :)

I assume you did this for testing. For normal gameplay, I would not recommend using Baka ScrapHeap with Buffout 4 (use Buffout 4's mem manager) unless you actually need to increase the script data limit. (exceeding the script data limit usually causes a CTD before the main menu shows when starting up the game)

Yeah after 13 crashes I gave up and just went through and manually removed all the wires and set things back up myself.
I was never a fan of the power grid wiring in the default city plan for that settlement anyway as it was needlessly complex and had a lot of redundancy and extra connectors so if it happens again maybe the tools will work now I've simplified it a lot and removed around half of the surplus connectors and wires.

The same thing happens to me with both options. It's a coinflip sometimes if the option will work without a crash. I wonder if it has to do with what you found with the order of how wires are applied or removed. One workaround I found that helps is to destroy the power grid before you rebuild the grid / wiring or remove wires.

  • The power grid repair system, including the automatic version, is now capable of repairing all power grids. Previously, some power grid corruptions couldn’t be repaired and the grid would be destroyed when this occurred.
  • --The destroy option is still in place as an option in case there are corner cases our updated code doesn’t account for.
Unfortunately, nothing changed for me after WSFW 2.3.3. It's an odd release because the mod version for WSFW itself never updated to 2.3.3 despite the main file updating, and the Script Override never updated either.
