Power and Settlement Sharing

I have upgraded my PC and wish to push Sim Settlements to the max.
Intel Core i7-8086K
CPU@4.00GHz 4.01GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB
Windows 10 Pro

On applying power to additional built player buildings? I do not see how this works truly as any created buildings, water purifiers, or security receive no power. Where is the connection node? What is the output of power? does it upgrade as the settlement goes from one level to the next? Could it be possible to simply create a Tesla tower that would radiate power and the limit could be seen when in the build mode? Could you build additional towers to expand the range? Perhaps there could be a way for the player to upgrade the tower? Perhaps using fusion cores or radioactive material ?

On connecting settlement resources is there any way to have all settlements build these automatically when you spawn a settlement? Currently I have been building one in each settlement as I create them but I just read you should NOT do this until the settlement reaches level 3.

I’ve been thinking about your questions, simply got distracted. Will do my best to answer.

When it’s built by the city plan, the plots effectively become “self-powered” in the background (as I understand it). A city plan will include power upgrades as it goes. (This is a good thing, because power requires caps upkeep for those playing in maintenance costs mode. An excess of power would become very expensive at early stages of the city.)

A Tesla Tower is a very interesting concept. You may have sparked a plot idea in my mind. Something for me to think about, I already have a few ideas on how to possibly make it work. I see no problems to placing overlapping towers - extending the range might be trickier with varying levels of the plot.

I’ve been told that you should not wire up your settlement, that messes with the background “self-powering” code. This means you shouldn’t hook up even a single light to the settlement, or you’ll have to wire up the lot.

If you need to power something custom up, create a few generators or the like. Generators cost caps in maintenance costs mode, so you might want to use wind generators if you play that.

Pushing your PC to the max...it sounds like you want to try running a big custom settlement of your own. Some players have done 30+ settlers with maximum plots. This is not something that I’ve tried.

the PC I am now using, to give you an idea is using i7-8086k processors running at 4GHz and 4.01GHz and 32 GB RAM so my PC can handle it easily. Thank you so much for your post and your thoughts

Make that 40+ ;) and like victoria says above if your computer
can handle it then it's not a big issue as long as it's not done
in the triangle of death.

It is definitely not a good idea to do it at Sanctuary/Red Rocket/Abernathy Farm. That area is named "the triangle of death" for a reason - they're close enough that they can put quite a load on your PC if you get too much going on in that area. This means that you need somewhere fairly well-separated from other places.

Using the Interactive Fallout 4 Map, set to show only settlements, some places pop to mind:

Sunshine Tidings Co-Op (fairly decent size)
Starlight Drive-In (good size and build-limit)
Coastal Cottage (never built there)
Egret Tours Marina (not large physically)
Somerville Place (never been)
Mirkwater Construction Site (never been)
Jamaica Plain (fairly smallish in size)

These are all likely far enough away from other settlements that you can build without having too much hassles with cities interfering with each other and causing slowdown/CTD.

Regarding the Tesla Tower concept, I've done some looking and it is possible. As an Advanced Industrial plot I think the characteristics might be along the following lines:

Power Output: 10/20/50 (generates power - or might radiate provided power - thought required)
Power Required: */*/* (provides its own power or re-radiates provided power)
Happiness Required: 0/-10/-20 (constant lightning racket day and night)
Taxes: (haven't looked into this yet)

The normal area for radiant power from a Power Connector is 500 (a 1-floor-tile range). If we use a level-based 10/20/50 as a multiplier, that would have a: 10/20/50 floor-tiles range. Probably far too much range, and I'm not certain what side-effects (if any) might happen with the game.

Maybe a 5/10/20 floor-tiles range would be better. At full size that should cover just about any build-zone other than Spectacle Island.

When will it get done? I don't have the technical ability by far to make animated thunderbolts and crackling electricity sounds. :grin So unless a real pro gets on the job, don't expect it anytime soon.

Though thinking about it, there's electricity arcs in the Vault 111 power room. Hmmm...

any suggestions on huge settlement recommendations ?

You will need a mod that increases max settlement population
size (i use 30 as max size) and also allot of charisma. I have to use
a power armor modified with legendary modifications, sharp modification
(on all parts) + an alloy called charismatic alloy (on all parts). For the
latter I'm not sure if it's from the game+dlcs or from Worsin's power
armor garage.

I don't have much experience from it. Croup Manor (45 settlers) is
my settlement with that kind of population size. But I guess path finding
might be an issue in some settlements if you squeeze too many plots
in and if you "cut off" "natural paths".

Some sort of power planning might be good but also hard when
you, like me, do 0% planning before or only very little. I just build
and see what happens more or less.
