Question Looking for info from people having guard assignment issues.

I know quite a few people have been having the problem of guards not getting assigned to martial plots after a vassal raid, or getting reassigned as workers even after you manually assign them as guards.
I've been having this problem myself and I think I found a common denominator..... Settlers!

Here are some parameters to help narrow it down:

  • You would have selected SS npc's/civilians instead of vanilla settlers during the prebuild options. (If you selected settlers instead of civilians and feel you still have info to give then please state this below)
  • The settlers in question are not the essential npc's like the Abernathy's, they're just generic settlers.
  • During a vassal raid these settlers possibly died.
  • You have settlers mixed in with civilians in any settlement, especially those that have guard reassignment issues.
  • Insure you are not mistaking visitors for civilians/settlers.

So what I've noticed during vassal raids is sometimes I have two or three settlers mixed in amongst the civilians, they usually die during the initial raid or during a follow up defend quest.
Firstly, they should not be there, secondly, they should not be killable.
A pattern I've noticed is if two of them die during the raid I will have two of my gang assigned as workers instead of guards almost immediately even though there's enough martial plots. If I manually change them back to guards they will revert to workers once I leave the settlement.
If they don't die during the initial raid and die in a defend quest later on a guard that had already been assigned correctly will change to a worker.

The goal here is to see if people with the guard assignment problem have anything in common with the above?

Thanks.

I'm using BoS Liberator, the end result is the same, Warriors from vassal liberation don't stay in a settlement as guards.

Even when I assign them as guard to a settlement after the raid or from an outpost they unassign themself from martial plots and just roam around the settlement without assignment.

enabling automatic role change guards mostly end up as workers doing anything BUT guarding the settlement.

enabling any settler to man martial plots at least solves having no defense value on vasals, but doesn't give any control value.

I never had civilians or field scribes mixed into my attack party though.

Hmmm. You might be onto something but in my case everyone is nob-bitingly crazy.

  1. I chose civilians.
  2. When you refer to the settlers being non-Abernathean, you are referring to the ones you had mixed in?
  3. I have seen one settler in amongst the civilians in both of my vassals, however, they were dead before I took control. One apparently dead at the hands of a ghoul in Sunshine Tidings (the ghouls were dead too, sooo...), the other was dead in the middle of Starlight Settlement (autopsy was inconclusive).
  4. There are no other vanilla people mixed in with my vassals, only some slaves at my outpost. Visitors are off and settlement control is on.
  5. EVERY Guard at a vassal will no longer contribute control if assigned to a martial plot, as Lemnear mentioned. Turns out this is true for Sunshine Tidings but not Starlight Drive-in.
  6. Sunshine Tidings - Guards will remain Guards upon return, however the martial plots will not behave as though they are manned, i.e. no upgrading, no occupied flag, and certainly not manned. Also my fourth guard refuses to stay there and always runs back to outpost at Abernathy (could be your mystery man). Control high, defense low. 4 raiders.
  7. Starlight Drive-in - Three of four guard towers are manned, however the raiders assigned to these plots do not remain at the plots and are listed as Workers. The fourth man does not man the last guard post and remains marked as a Guard. Second mystery man? Control low, defense high. 4 raiders.
  8. In no Vassal or Outpost will my raiders man the guard posts physically, even when they remain listed as Guards. All they tend to do is either, utilise animation points, perform settler animations, or simply run around like they have been mixing jet and sugar bombs.
Frankly, I got to a point where I thought their behaviour, not manning towers, not remaining assigned to their role/plots, and being generally insubordinate, were simply quirks of Conqueror. I just stopped attacks in the holotape and went about my day. It would be nice to see these guys behaving as they should.

This may be unrelated but something I have been encountering during my current playthrough.

Relevant or not you decide.

So I am leaving settlements empty when I unlock. I do not have a single beacon, except for a Garvey quest at sunshine, but scrapped as soon as quest was marked completed.

In various settlements, and I have most unlocked, random settlers are showing up. Since I didn't build anything in those locations, obviously I had unhappiness with no met needs.

What I am wondering is if the random settlers are just that.. random. Vanilla game bug or whatnot.

Just 2 pennies today. The 3rd penny is tomorrow. :)

So Ive been having this problem. Its not as simple as the gaurds wont assign. The gaurds will assign themselves but when I enter into workshop mode they unassign themselves from the plots. BUT it gets SO much weirder. I took all the gaurds and sent them back to my main outpost and reassigned new warriors as gaurds. This time I did not go to the workshop which is Sanctuary built with plots by me being used as a vassel and I am in control of my vassel settlements. I was bouncing around between my other settlements at the time trying to meet soldier needs so my I can do more attacks. During this the new gaurds were upgrading the plots (seen the pop ups) I was happy I had found a work around. So I finally meet the soldier needs and my army builds rapidly. This causes crashes at my home base Starlight Drive Inn. I figure its because the game is trying to make 18 new warriors pretty much all at once. I tried to do an attack and CTD, I take a nap to save (survival) CTD as soon as I get up. OK I decide I gotta just let this place do its thing for a little while because Ive been bouncing around between my newly founded empire (whole left upper quarter of map). I load into a save from before the latest CTDs and head off to finish the story (Im at end game wipe out Railroad and BoS) on my way out of Diamond City (my house is Aloots Homeplate) I leave the city and all of my Sanctuary Hills settlers are standing in the entry way. I get a big laugh and head out to finish the game without really thinking about what I just saw. 2 hours later the Commonwealth is firmly under Institute control I decide to head back to my Raider empire. I go to Starlight and try to run attack and I literally fell asleep before the quest triggered. Im like Ok crap my warrior problem still hasnt fixed itself or a script is hung up or something. Its late I go to bed and forget. Next day I load a save from before the attempt at an attack. I decide to go back to my settlements and manage all the resources. I go to Sanctuary and nobody is there except the raider gaurds. Theyre assigned though, so I go into the workshop mode to see if the settler plots were still assigned and they were and even upgrading while nobody is there (except I should mention Marcy Jun and Sturgis were still in Sanctuary). I decided to go back to Diamond City and theyre all still standing there. At this point I just went back a few hours in the saves and found one before all the stuff went nuts.

OK my mod list is pretty light its well under 100 and most are SimSettlements mods. Ive used the majority of the mods Im using for quite some time and I trust most of them the only thing thats new and uses scripts is Better Location Damage and I am using the full thing. I can share the whole list once I am at my home pc if your interested.

The problem is in the workshop system as I had spent the prior couple hours just doing conqueror and settlement building any time I spent away from settlements worked perfectly even on my prior playthrough using the new Depravity mod (not using this time this was supposed to be just a conqueror/institute playthrough). I would say the game is not a fan of me wanting to be in control of vassel settlements. I also had turned off in the conqueror section in the pip boy auto assignment in an attempt to remedy the issues I was having. I noticed that anything that wasnt a raider in my outposts causes a problem. Enslaved would constantly unassign themselves and I even had the raiders attack them as soon as I enter a settlement. Robot farmers seemed to work without issues though.

Last night I had found a save prior to my Sanctuary settlers running away to Diamond City. I decide to move a defense plot I placed poorly and as soon as I enter workshop mode I see the raiders assigned to the defenses (3 near bridge to vault 111) unassign from them and not just the one I moved but all 5 of them. So I scrapped all those plots and built 5 new martial plots and assigned them. This save is before I took Tempines as a vassel I believe so tonight I planned to do that again and see what happens. I did keep a couple saves from during the time my settlers had gone rouge just in case anyone was interested.

I also forgot to mention another rather strange problem I had right before this. I was dying in workshop mode, what I mean I was at 80% health and as I was in the workshop mode I would lose health and when I exited the workshop I would die. I am using BLD mod so I thought it was bleed damage sickness or lack of sleep. I had applied a dirty bandage and couldnt sleep because of the rads I figured ok BLD is killing me. I wait it out, antibiotics, bandage, water, food and sleep Im back to 100% and nothing showing in pip boy under effects. I go back into workshop mode and lose health, so Im thinking I have perk that allows me to regain health and that must be conflicting with workshop plus and the invunerabilty somehow so I turned that off and it seemed to solve the problem.

Id say though that the next 4 hours of the playthrough after this is when I start having all the other problems. I had already formed my alliance with the institute and had pretty much pushed all the way to the end of the main story so I was just forming my raider empire. FYI I had saved the settlers in Concord and done Minuteman quests as I was following the main story. I left Jammer in Concord until after getting to the institute with the help of the Minuteman. I did this because it seems in order to clean the castle you must do the minutemen quests, I took Preston with me on some settlement stuff after retaking the castle and once I maxed out his affinity left him at the castle where he cant see me taking over the upper left quarter of the map as a raider. Once I had this all set up Jammer and I finally take our first outpost, Starlight. Then GrayGarden as my first vassel, then Red Rocket (empty except Dogmeat) as a second outpost. After that I took Abernathy as a vassel and then Sanctuary as a vassel. Marcy, Jun, Mamma Murphy, and Sturgis are the only ones there and they lived in the yellow workshop house in beds and were assigned to corn tatos and mutfruit in the backyard. Mamma had her chair. My first trip back there and I find the raider gaurds I had assigned had somehow assigned themselves to my crops. It was during my attempts to reassign them and build new things at Sanctuary to build up a good vassel that I was dying in workshop mode.

I know this was a lot of stuff to try and take in and it sounds like my mod list is probably a big mess. I would at least think that. I started with a clean install of the game and this is my first time using Vortex. All the mods were downloaded fresh into Vortex as my first attempt at moving my mods over caused none of them to be properly linked and therefore updates didnt show (I noticed this during your previous update to the mods). My last playthrough had gone very similarly with the conqueror system but I thought my use of the Depravity mod and the mods accompanying it might have caused extra stress on my system. So I started clean and my plan was BLD and Conqueror, I have none of the Creation Club stuff installed even though I do own a good bit of it just to try and keep things as simple as possible. I also started this right after the last update to the SS mods hoping the fix to my issues would have been patched out.

What I think is that when Im going into and out of the workshop mode trying to find unassigned raiders and properly assign them as guards or whatever is where the problem stems from. Like I said when the problems started I was bouncing around my empire doing a lot of stuff like that. I think somewhere along the line I get everything confused (meaning the scripts) as I enter workshop mode run around looking for someone who is unassigned and then exiting workshop mode to change them from a worker to a guard or maybe an unassigned worker into a warrior. Ive noticed as I do this a couple times in a settlement the scripts lag and then the pop ups come up multiple times cause Ive hit the button and nothing happens till I do it again and then Ive got 2 pop ups and I gotta cancel out of one.

Honestly the mod is incredible and the amount of stuff youve gotten it to do is amazing but I feel like maybe your trying to let us control too much through the settings. I feel like, and I have no way to back it up, that all the options are where the trouble is. It seems when I want to build in a vassel that is screwing it up. I havent tested it but I wonder if the cities were built from plans and I just left everything as default if everything would work as designed flawlessly. The problems with unassigning are clearly triggered by me entering into workshop mode as I have seen it happen in real time but I have to enter workshop mode even just to find who is assigned and who isnt.

Last thing I promise, raiders sent to become guards usually show up in the settlement when assigned to most of the martial plots become workers. I would then change them to guards and sometimes they would then unassign themselves from the martial plot they had been working as a worker. I figured this was likely due to some martial plots not being correctly identified as defense but as things got more and more strange this seems more like a bit of extra info then the actual problem. I do hope something Ive written here is helpful I know its too much but I was hoping that something in the details I left here would be helpful.

Played again tonight and this time I was able to just fast travel into Sanctuary and without entering into workshop mode all the raider guards unassigned themselves and start wondering around. I reassigned them went on one quick mission to wipe out the Railroad fast traveled back afterward and it happened again. Just me entering into the settlement seems to trigger it. It seems to be the same at Abernathy although I only went there once and assigned the guards.

Also noted the health in workshop thing happened again and I think it was just BLD and needing to sleep.

So playing last night the Sanctuary settlers ran all the way to Diamond City again, the trigger was a "defend Santuary Hills" from Gunners. I happened to be on the bridge and the settlers all came running past me. This I believe was before the Gunners had even spawned in but I decided to follow my settlers a few of which got killed as they tried to reach Diamond City. Once they were all at Diamond City I fast travelled back to Sanctuary and killed all the Gunners. Then I rang the vanilla settlement bell slept for 24hrs and the settlers did come back.

Im getting CTDs at my main base at Starlight, I havent been able to figure it out. I have a save that will repeatedly CTD after just 5-10 seconds of loading it. I reloaded a prior save and started from there and havent CTD since. This happened during the Sanctuary settler shuffle but I couldnt say exactly at what point and my first guess was the settlers from Sanctuary may have been in the area and that was causing an issue.

I had 2 city plans upgrade in the time before this happened to me both times. I had forgotten about that the first time it happened. I started the game with the graphics settings on low (build limit in place) I also set the cities to manual upgrade only. I wanted to keep the commonwealth at level one until I had control of the settlements with Jammer. Ive done many minutemen quests for settlements before I set up my first outpost with Jammer to get the castle cleaned up and had a plan to split the commonwealth between them. When set to manual upgrade there is no option to upgrade in the city planners desk even with leader required off. So what I did was switch to auto upgrade for just long enough for Abernathy and Tenpines to upgrade to level 2 and as soon as Tenpines started its city upgrade I turned it back to manual to stop all my cities from upgrading back to back which it did the first time I switched it on. This also happened to me before the first time the settlers ran away to Diamond city but I had forgot that all the city upgrades happened prior to that. Also these 2 that did upgrade when I traveled to them I got the pop up for a city refresh and it was during that refresh that the city upgraded while I was in the settlements both Abernathy and then Tenpines. I went to each in order of them upgrading but not till both had "finished" according to the HUD. Then waited in each individually till they went through the refresh and then for some time after. I fast traveled in between so as not to go through any other settlements while walking just because I have no idea what Im doing wrong.

Sanctuary was attacked again. This time the settlers did run toward the bridge but since the gunners spawned in right in front of Red Rocket I cant say whether they were running to DC or just to the fight. They did remain in Sanctuary.

I went back and read the first post and Im so sorry I didnt say right off the bat, YES I have a mix of settlers and civilians at my settlements. Its been that way every time Ive used the mod (since release) so I never even thought about that as an issue.

The problem is having control of vassel settlements, I turned that off and the problem is gone after an entire evening playing. Also many of my other issues have started clearing up. Seems like too many things were scheduled to run that had piled up. I did a couple quests for Ophelia and one for Jammer and a couple "small events" happened at home base. I was finally able to sleep at base without CTD a couple times although I dont think I am yet able to start an attack from HQ without it getting stuck. I did start an attack from another outpost without much issue.

Just a random suggestion... fast travel to Home Plate. Hard save. Exit game. Reload game. set timescale to 1 ... maybe let it set idle for a night sleeping (you). let the scripts run and clear up.

Save. Exit game. Reload. Reset timescale to 20. Fast travel to Concord Museum.

Walk. to. Sanctuary.

Just random thought.

Personally after the idle time, I would run it through re-saver to see if any loose orphan scripts... but that's me.

Home plate is key. Not in the worldspace of the settlements and forces cell clearing and reloading.

Good luck.

I appreciate the help, but I feel like Homeplate is actually part of my issues. I use Aloot's Homeplate mod and when using Conqueror it causes 2 Homeplate settlements to be listed. Back in the days before when it was just RoTC I even had settlement items build themselves into Homeplate during city upgrades out in the world.

I will not be using Aloot's Homeplate in my next attempt at Conqueror to see if there are in fact conflicts. I'm planning on doing a minuteman faction when the updates roll out.

Can I do what your saying from the Institute instead? Ive gone there in the past to try and get away from the world and let things clear up. Funny story one time my character must have gotten stuck in workshop mode because I was able to fly around the institute one time when I was trying to get the game to stop acting goofy. I was even able to save exit game and reload into the institute and fly around. Needless to say I had to go back a few saves and do things differently..

Luckily though things have been getting better. I played last night kinda 50/50 watching MNF and doing Conqueror quests. I'd let the game idle 10-15 minutes in each settlement I went to which is how I confirmed the guard issue was the control vassel settlements option. It seemed like every quest I did it would get a little better at HQ. One of the quests was recruitment which I remember doing in a prior playthrough much earlier into the Conqueror system then I am now. I think it was probably quests like that were just holding me back a little, like Jammer was probably trying to get me to do some of this stuff a while ago meanwhile I was taking over every settlement I could get my hands on as fast as I could and stuff got piled up.

Alright, Tenpines report. The place with 4 settlers mixed in with civvies. I really cannot say there is a difference. If anything they seem to do a better job of staying assigned to Guard duty, and rarely do I see them performing settler tasks, i.e. picking crops. In my most recent visit two were assigned as workers, two as guards, two/four towers were active. This really isn't any different than my other vassals. With vassals I find sometimes they have no active towers, other times all active towers. If I ever look at my pipboy it is either one or the other. Good news is the towers upgrade, which I guess is the most important part. Sorry, but I can't see their being a relationship.

Guards do reliably unassign themselves now whenever I'm entering a vassal settlement. Just passing by seems to work, the flags keep flying high.

With 4.1.4 assignment seems to have gotten worse for me though. Now auto assignment keeps reassigning bots away from plots I assigned them to manually. I'm at the point where I turn off auto assignment in SS and WF.

I would have to agree with the post before me the issue seemed to get worse after the last update to the mod. I had found that turning off control of vassel settlements had stopped it from happening until the update. Unfortunately that meant I couldnt reassign them because I didnt have access to the workshop anymore either. I also get attacked frequently which meant the guards would eventually get killed and sometimes dead guards would still have options as if they were living and show on the HUD as live guards.

Also have some wood to chuck on the fire

I watched a Vassal Guard un-assign herself from a Martial plot in front of me whilst trying to find a missing raider. There was no recent attack, though she was still marked as a Guard after. She also un-assigns after raids but is marked as 'Worker' after those events.

edit: It's not just raids, it's any attack or agro. A normal raider walked too close and one of the guards fired a shot. This lead to all of them un-assigning and becoming workers.

L1 Sunshine Tidings Vassal
  • 1 'Settler' & 13 'Civilian', moved the 'Settler' to a non raider joint
  • 3 'Guards', one is missing but not classed as unemployed gavel found them
  • Guards unassign after agro and become unemployed Workers. Though I think they're actually stuck in limbo with no role, I can't click 'R' to assign a role but they show up on the CQ bar as Workers.
  • Sending them back to Martial plot restores there Guard status after ~30s.
  • Sometimes unemploy just for a laugh, still Guard class though
  • SS Auto-assign disabled (locally)
Also, probably unrelated, I have about 3 "Raiders" which don't seem to be CQ raiders. They have no role and can't be moved from Starlight (HQ) but I can assign them to SS plots. I don't think they count towards anything, are these the 'Settler' equivelent for CQ raiders where they aren't supposed to spawn?
It turns out there are CQ raiders that are stuck in role-limbo and can't be assigned a role. By default they're Workers class but I can't see their role when looking at them, nor click 'R'. If I have CQ auto-assign role enabled I can stick them on a SS plot and it will auto assign them the respective role. This is also what happens when the Guards are unnasigned after agro, they're stuck in role-limbo.

Side note, I have insane script lag most of the time. I think the asyncronity of some scripts might be causing me issues allong side this one. The words 'rickety' and 'bethesda' come to mind. CQ is fun af so far tho

edit: Found the missing guard, they kept running back to HQ whenever gavel spawned.

TL;DR: Guard can un-assign without a raid to trigger it, and any agro will unassign them. Raiders get stuck in role-limbo and can't be assigned a role unless CQ auto-assigned to a SS plot.
