Is Settlers eating out of Workbench an intended mechanic?

I never had this issue with vanilla FO4, and it seems to happen even more frequently when using Sim Settlements with Workshop Framework. Settlers are eating food out of the settlement workbench inventory. Is there a way to stop it from happening?

I did some extensive testing today and it seems that this happens regardless of a settlement's food production value. If I have a settlement with 10 settlers, and food production is at 20, they will still dig into the workbench for a snack.

This means I have to keep food in a separate container out of the workbench, which complicates the process of crafting food or making/maintaining cages (and negates one of the benefits of supply lines).

I believe It always worked like that.
If you had no production but put food in The workbench, settlers would use It. It also shows green in workshop mode despite being 0 food, until It goes below the diary consumption

Yep. It always worked that way.

Now I am not sure how it works with SS but this is the way the food system for vanilla works.

1. Food consumption is reduced the higher your happiness is.
2. Food production is increased the higher your happiness is.
3. Settlers will eat tatos before any other types of food.
4. If their is no tatos in your workbench then they will be consumed via supply lines.
5. Brahmin will increase food production in a settlement (not the raw number in workshop mode.)
6. Food placed into your workbench is random based upon what you settlers are growing. More variety of food grown equal more chances of something you might not have wanted as much of.

So basically you want to ensure extra tato production. I usually make sure to plant 1 tato plant per settler. Then plant crops for glue production.

If you wanna see some REALLY random stuff grown. Have a settlement with no crops at all then have 4 brahmin in it. The game just goes nuts and starts throwing random aid items to cover that bonus food production brahmin have.

This is an example of that production for a day for six brahmin. In a population of 10-12 settlers. As soon as you place a crop of any kind, then the bonus defaults to the crop types.

Okay, hmm. I'm wondering why this has never been an issue in the past.

Interesting about tato production. I've not heard that before. I'll see if that changes anything.

All productions have cap. So despite having 10 more of food, you will reach a limit. Settlers will use that food, and then It will be filled again with food productions. That would be the reason why you never saw your food decrease

Food will not be automatically produced at any settlement whose workshop contains more than 10 food items (including items that cannot be produced by settlement resources, like meat, gumdrops, etc). This cap on production increases by 1 per settlement population.

So a population of 20 settlers will have a food cap of 30 food.

Once your workshop goes over 30 it shuts production off. So if you had 29 food in your workshop it would still produce food for that day.

Now not sure how that works with SS because it changes the system.

This is also why many people use the IDEK logistical plot because it will empty all the workshop and deposit it into one settlement on a daily basis.

I think some folks are running into WSFW failing to produce anything.

Patch 1.0.5 of WSFW should be out tomorrow, after you install that, if it continues to happen - upload your .fos save file to dropbox.com, share it, and PM me a link and I'll take a look to see if I can figure out what's going on.
