Hub of the problem [BUGS] and SPOILERs for anyone else having issues with this quest

This quest seems to need some serious work. I had to reload 5 times before I finally got through it from start to finish without it derailing and Jake becoming unresponsive. I am running several mods but none are on the known conflicts list.

BUGS (there are several):

Bug: The first time I entered the building Jake didn't appear until after the ghouls in the lobby were dead and then he walked in the door and refused to do anything.
Solution: I read on another thread that companions my cause pathing/object interaction issues so I reloaded, dismissed them, and tried again.

Bug: Jake takes an exceptional amount of time to path around the 3rd floor.
Solution: This probably isn't a problem with the mod per se, but that big hole in the 3rd floor outside the objective room seems to be a real issue for the ai pathing.

Bug: THE SUB-BASEMENT IS ABSOLUTE TRASH. None of the items are at all relevant to anything (note, holotape, safe/s) except the pile of floormats that look like static trash and I didn't realize I could interact with until after I exited through the locked street door and came back in, which seemed to break the quest. After re-entering the sub basement I was unable to interact with the pile of floor mats (the button prompt appeared but activating them did nothing).
Solution/subsequent bug: I reloaded and went all the way back through the quest to this point and immediately clicked the floor mats after Jake told me to look around. This activated his dialogue that tells you to go through the trap door but then we were interrupted by the second ghoul. After the ghoul was dealt with, Jake offered his next dialogue line (that he shouldn't say until after you go through the trap door) and then refused to go through the trap door.
Solution(solution): I reloaded again, got all the way to the subbasement, activated and killed both ghouls immediately, waited for Jake to poke around the safe and do his initial dialogue, activated the pile of mats, waited for him to tell me to go in, then immediately entered the trap door. This finally allowed me to see the quest through to completion.
Addendum to Solution(solution): After entering the subbasement with Jake, if you leave and then re-enter through the back expert locked door, Jake will appear next to the door and offer his next dialogue regardless of whether you have gone through the trap door. If you jump the script like this, the quest will break and Jake will get stuck and refuse to do anything.

SPOILER: detailed walkthrough for anyone else who suspects they may be stuck/broke the quest.

1. Meet Jake near the amphitheater and do his dialogue
2. Go to the map marker he gives you for the Vault Tec regional office
3. Dismiss all companions (even the dog) before entering the building. Once you are in this building, do not leave until you finish the quest. Do not save/load until you have finished the quest. Do not interact with anything until you are prompted by dialogue to do so. The quest stage progression is exceptionally finicky for whatever reason.
4. On entering the Lobby Jake will start to walk around and chatter about how you might not be alone, this will spawn 3 ghouls and may pull others from higher floors. Kill them.
5. Jake will go over to the computer in the lobby and start tinkering with it and then start a dialogue with you. I don't think any of your dialogue responses in this building matter. He will tell you to find a specific employee office.
6. None of the offices on the 2nd floor matter, there are a couple of sleeping ghouls but no quest related content.
7. The sequence of events from here on needs to be very precise!
8. At the top of the stairs on the third floor, look for the hole in the floor to the left. The office you're looking for is across that hole. Jake won't have a problem getting in, but he may have issues getting out. There is a terminal in the office he will tinker with and start another dialogue. He tells you to find a keycard for the lobby elevator
9. There is a named ghoul on the third floor in another office (Davidson). Kill him for the keycard.
10. Get Jake to follow you back down to the lobby. The ai pathing is stupid, it may take him a minute to figure out how to do it.
11. Swipe the card, get him in the elevator, then press the button to go to the Sub-Basement.
12. In the sub basement you will see several tall shelves, one of which is falling over. 2 ghouls will spawn around this shelf when you get near (one in front, one behind). Activate both and kill them immediately.
13. Jake will poke around in a couple safes, say they're empty and tell you to look around. There is a conspicuous button on the wall over a "pile of mats" that have an interaction prompt. Interact with the mats to uncover a trap door and Jake will come over and congratulate you and tell you to go through. Press the button on the wall to unlock it and go through immediately. Do not hang around to loot the sub basement, you can do that on your way out, proceed to the Basement-Basement.
14. Jake will start a dialogue about the wacky contraptions down here and what they were doing with the sensors. He'll walk around and look at stuff. Theres a machine with a conveyor belt and terminal attached to it that has a conspicuous red button. Push it.
15. Jake says the machine is dead but downloads a schematic off of the terminal then tells you to keep looking.
16. There is a Novice locked door. Pick it then look in the open safe in the room to find a holotape. This will start another dialogue with Jake where he informs you that you've found schematics for new plot types. Theres more to find down here though so keep looking.
17. In the last room you will find another strange machine that appears to be hot-wired to a ham radio. It is inactive because it has no power. You can follow a thick red wire through a door and around a corner to find a circuit breaker switch. Flip it to restore power.
18. Return to the ham radio machine and press the button on the console (the console, not the ham radio). It should light up green and call Jake over.
19. He tells you to go back into the other room and flip the switch on the machine in the middle of the room that has the sensors wired into it.
20. Deactivating the machine will start another dialogue with Jake where he speculates on how they were trying to reverse engineer a sensor hub, but they didn't do a very good job of it. There is one last quest item to find.
21. There is an office desk in the ham radio room. On it is a red file folder. Retrieve it and bring it to Jake to trigger the final dialogue where you finish this god forsaken quest and start the next one.

My next issue was in the final portion because there is nothing stopping you from doing things out of order.
I did an experiment on v1.0.0f (IIRC) where I did this portion in every order I could think of and it always successfully completed. I have done this quest over 7 times with a different companion each time and have not encountered any problems. The one thing I found that would consistantly break this quest is interacting with the locked basement door that leads to the "outside." IIRC, this was addressed in a patch.
I have downloaded as many 4k mods as I could find
The game engine might be running out of addressable memory. I'm no expert here, just a guess. (also the proud recipient of the first ever official SS2 "talking out your backside" badge!) :lol

For some reason in my game, Jake and the Player gets stuck in dialogue after telling you to look for the specific employee office in Vault Tec Regional. Reloaded to an earlier save and dismissed every companion before talking to Jake. Followed the steps to the letter and he always gets stuck at that point. Tried using console commands but he won't follow you into the office to use the second employee terminal. I noticed that he becomes utterly uninteractable right after the dialogue at the lobby terminal.1610721627674.png In this screenshot right after the dialogue in Step 5, my crosshairs are on him but his name and the E) Talk does not appear.
I haven't tried skipping a step in the quest using console commands yet.

P.S. I was able to do this quest successfully with companions in 1.0.4. This happened on a new game on 1.0.5.

P.P.S. I tried siccing him on the ghoul hiding in Davidsons office by moving him there using console commands. After letting him kill the ghoul, he started walking again to the employee's office on his own. He has problems pathing through the hole in the floor in front of the office so I used the MoveTo Player console command while inside the office. He started walking to the point outside the door and started acting normally again!

P.P.P.S. Apparently this was the steps taken by fellow player pschoenmann in his post dated Nov 29, 2020 in Hub of the problem / Jake disapeared going in vault-tec HQ thread.

Do you have the dialog camera turned off? This can cause issues with the SS2 quests. You can find it by hitting 'esc' Settings>Gameplay

Hello!
Im doing all the steps above and when Jake and i arrive in the basement i dont get the "looking around the safe" dialogue. any tips you get that part working ?

Ok!!!
I figured out my mistake by re reading all the steps and with what others had said, my mistake was to not stop at the little office on the left of the hole at the third floor, wich start the dialogue to find the basement and the card , then i had everything else OK.

I was going straight for the kill after the loby dialogue, that was my mistake, you NEED the extra part at the 3rd floor where he explains why we go in basement!!!

so sry !!

Met with Jake, cleared the sub basement. Found all the items but the quest won't show ended. Im still getting the find clues option after completing all the dialog. I didnt notice any bugs until this point, so I didn't know this was a thing and had my companion active. Is there anything I can do besides starting over?

Did you find the schematics on the desk near the "vault hub?" I can't remember if there is a quest marker on that.

I usually get the holotape first. In extensive testing with v1.0.0f, I found that the order you find things does not matter. The only way I have ever broke this quest was by entering the HQ building through the locked back door. IIRC, this has been fixed in a patch so the HQ events will only fire when you enter through the front door.

The first time I did the quest I got hung up at the end of it where it wouldn't complete the Find Secrets and Follow Jakes Lead stages of the quest. If I remember correctly I activated the holotape the first time (I always go for locked doors first) and found the documents before I activated the button for the beeper in the same room(again I always loot a room as soon as I enter it).

The second time I did the quest I did everything in the most obvious order that I thought they wanted me to do it. I did the printer first then found the beeper and after that found the documents and finally the holotape. Everything seemed to work fine that time.

It seems like it needs to be activated in a specific sequence. Some of us like to loot rooms and root around for hidden stashes before we do actual quest related stuff. :P

I did some exhaustive testing of this quest somewhere around SS2 v1.0.0f where I tried to complete the quest objectives in every possible order. The quest completed fine every time. The last time I completed the quest was SS2 v1.0.10. I only tried a few combinations, but I didn't have any issues. I can only guess these issues are caused by a mod conflict.

I'm in the process of starting a new game. If I encounter any issues with this quest, I guarantee the SS2 team will hear about it. ;)

i completed this quest, should i get all the rest of the plot types after this as I am only showing the residential, arg and industrial. Am I missing something??? This is my second play through and can't remember when it go them last time.

You don't actually get them to use yourself until a couple more quests later - those being meeting THE RON, and taking care of business in Vault 81 - once you get back to Jake again after those, THEN you get the other four plot types. You may recall that in that basement, Jake might've run the holotape to unlock those on HIS Pipboy, but you didn't.

Ran into a problem in the sub-basement where Jake wouldn't have his dialog after I'd activated the ASAM test switch. To fix it I had to resort to manipulating the quest stage with the ‘setstage’ console command. I was able to just activate the next step (stage 190 in my case) after it failed to start automatically, and the rest of the quest was fine. I was also able to get the follow-up quest so I don’t think this broke anything. Here is the questID and stage info for anyone else wanting to do the same.

It took me six tries to get this quest to work unbugged. I strongly suspect the culprit is I killed Ghoul Davidson & took the key card before Jake found and read the terminal on level three. This quest is very fragile as it breaks unless it is done in exactly the order the designers intended.

If you have Expert Lockpicking you can get into the vault tec basement through the back as a work-around

I suspect you have a mod conflict. The only time I encountered a bug in this quest was when I entered the locked door to the basement before that was fixed in a patch. I have completed this quest doing things in just about every order possible. Most times I do this quest I end up killing Davidson first.

It is know that some ghoul replacement/spawning mods can cause this quest to have issues. If you search this forum for "Hub of the Problem" or "Vault Tec Headquarters" you should get more than 10 results. There has been a lot of discussion.

tried a few times and doesn't seem to be the case!

As msalaba said you must be suffering from a conflict

If you are using DECAY that can be the cause
