Ghost Desk

Settlement: Abernathy Farm

Description: I have a "ghost desk" that won't go away. It has all of the items that are added dynamically when a city planner's desk is created and not the desk itself. Since it does not have the desk, it can't be moved or scrapped in workshop mode. Refreshing the city did not get rid of it. I was able to pack up the "ghost desk" once, but it did not go away. The ghost desk is fully functional aside from the normal desk obstructing you from sitting at the ghost desk.

Reproduction: I believe this started when I accidentally chose to pack up the desk when I was moving through the menu too fast trying to access the tools section. I reloaded a save that I made just before packing up the desk and continued playing.

There is a "Clean Up Objects" function in the City Manager's Holotape, I believe it should solve this. Though I've never had the desk get left behind so can't 100% confirm. It would be interesting to hear if this is the case though. If the desk ever gets left behind again, try the option and see what happens.

I would suspect probably some script lag as most probable cause for this. A lot of script build up could possibly cause the city desk scripts to fail to clean them up. It might be interesting to see what FallRim Tools ReSaver has to say about the save in question.

If many mods were uninstalled that could cause this situation.

Running Tools->"Clean Up Settlement" did not remove the ghost desk.

ReSaver shows 2 unattached script instances: one an InputEnableLayer and the other an ObjectReference.

Edit: Also I have not uninstalled any mods during this play-through.

I see. Then it would seem like it's more likely that this is some kind of Sim Settlements bug. ReSaver sounds totally normal so that mostly rules out huge script lag or bad save. Perhaps Tools->"Clean Up Settlement" does not affect City Planner's Desk pieces?

Is this by chance in an active City Plan? If yes then you could try Refreshing City Plan, that is what I'd first try if I had a City Plan going & the desk got bugged. If the desk cannot be interacted with at all then I'd try building a new one manually and if that doesn't help, I don't know it offhand but there is likely a console command to refresh City Plan. Though if they're consistently bugged then it might not be able to solve things, but could still be helpful information for troubleshooting purposes? Seems like there are possible bugs on the latest Sim Settlements so this kind of information could be potentially helpful to Kinggath. It could narrow things down to the cause. It would be cool IMO if we make it a little easier to track down.

Are you using WSFW &/or WS+, and are they at latest versions too? And does this occur at any settlement or only Abernathy?

Also I forgot but if you did Download/Install with NMM it can mess up. It is a random, unpredictable occurrence & seems to be a matter of good or bad luck. Just that you could try manually downloading archive & manual install. I think I only experienced something similar to this when I accidentally saved after using the TSPrepareforExport command when working on making a new City Plan, I just reloaded because I knew that it happened but got curious what kind of stuff will happen if we continued to build after using the command, since we're told not to save/continue with a game after using that command. A good thing to know IMO in case I'd saved & forgotten or WS+ autosaved. Just mentioning it in case of the specific scenario that you were working on a City Plan project and were exporting levels.

I'm using the default RotC city plan. Refreshing the city only created a new desk that works and renders correctly that is in the same xyz position as the ghost desk.

I'm using WSFW v1.0.5. The latest version right now is v1.0.6 which I'm going to install now. I am not using any version of WS+.

I do use NMM to manage my mods, but I manually verify that each mod is installed correctly by ensuring that everything is unpacked correctly and placed where it should be. I have encountered mods that NMM fails to install correctly. I've usually been able to unpack the mod, do whatever to a file or the file structure to make it compatible, repack the mod, and feed it back through NMM and have it install correctly.

I can continue playing just fine with this bug, but seeing it fixed would be great. I believe it has something to do with the pack up desk feature.

The "settlement object" is gone, but there seems to be a remnant artifact that the dynamically created desk items are still associated with.

It can fail to replace files that were already there from a previous install, possibly due to Windows permissions issues when NMM tries to overwrite it appears that Windows might prevent it. If this happens the other stuff will be there but the old version of a file might remain. It is unlikely but it has happened to me. I think it does persistently happen to me if I try to have NMM install an updated version of a mod that I'd previously installed manually, since I think NMM has lower permissions than me as a user so Windows won't allow it to replace anything I placed there manually.

I'd went to manual only but wanted to start having NMM handle stuff like outfits/gun mods.

I see. So it seems to me that most likely it isn't due to anything on your end specifically.

Seems like complex sort of bug :(

Hmm - I'm unable to replicate this with the Pack Desk feature. Have you been able to trigger it again?

If you have steps I can use to reproduce this, I can definitely fix it.

I'm finding this to be really difficult to reproduce.

I am able to create a temporary ghost desk by quickly moving it, resulting in duplicates of the dynamically created desk items, and then scrapping the desk just as quickly leaving some of the desk items behind. This temporary ghost desk goes away when the cell is reloaded simply by leaving to another cell and returning.

The permanent ghost desk that I have never goes away. Refreshing the city, cleaning the settlement, and reloading the cell does not get rid of it.

It's probably too rare of a case to worry about. At least it's documented.

Abernathy Farm upgraded to level 2. The city planner desk was moved into the barn and the ghost desk is no longer present.
