Generators and water pumps constantly breaking

Hey I am new to sim settlements 2 I am having a problem with generators and water purifiers constantly needing to be repaired. If I go out on a quest and come back to sanctuary something is broken without fail every sing time. I get no messages that sanctuary is under attack. If I decide to sleep in sanctuary for 24 hours when I wake up something will be broken again without fail. Every single time. This is a brand new save file And the only other mods I have that affect settlements are scrap everything and place anywhere mods. Sanctuary is currently my only settlement that I have done any building in so I don't know if it is going to be a problem in every settlement or just in sanctuary.

I used to have this issue and the thing that fixed it for me was to go into the MCM (or holotape) >> Workshop Framework >> Framework Controls, and then turn off 'Power Grid Auto-Repair' and 'Power Grid Auto-Destroy'. If these two settings are currently on for you, try turning them off and seeing if the issue persists.

Do you have non-plot operational costs enabled? I think those used to be on by default on survival (and maybe still are, idk). So if the settlement doesn't have specific resources, stuff like turrets and generators would break non-stop.
Unrelated, but Scrap everything sucks.

This. It was likely the most frustrating thing to me as well when starting SS2 as I default to survival and it was just really unclear what the heck was going on. Also, even if you have the materials in the workbench, they will not be available to the settlement while you are also not present in the settlement (map cell). If you need the settlement to have access to any resources while you are away (settlement cell not loaded), you will need to build a city planners desk and store the materials and caps there (even if you aren't using city plans :D) if your built plots do not cover the material needed.
Also, IIRC, one of the common materials for non-plot maintenance is cloth, which is organic so you won't be able to have the settlement cover it's costs until you unlock the organic industrial plot, or store cloth from your own scrapping. That said, the junk industrial plot will provide random junk, including cloth, but I think it just goes into the workbench, so it too is unavailable to settlements while you are away. Non-plot maintenance asl has a caps requirement, which should be able to be covered from the initial residential buildings, but if you want to store some, you can do so at the city planners desk.

There is an option in settings to turn off the upkeep on non SS2 resources. Its one of the itty bitty text explanations so its kind of hard to read. There is a bandaid of sorts in the Settlement Repair Bot mod. It gives you a construction protectron that will fix things for free. You can set the scan for broken things to every 20 sec. It will also fix other robots at the settlement so long as their not 'dead'.

I like the concept of the items having upkeep but not the execution. Though Id be hard pressed to come up with anything better.

Totally agreed, and the repair bot is awesome. A lot of that authors mods are very interesting (shield bubble and the defense drones/radar really great for survival and combat difficulty+ mods). If something breaks and I can't explain why, I usually just drop the repair bot first hah!
For me, I had an expectation that materials would be pulled from the workbench if not found in virtual storage, regardless if I were in the settlement or not. It is explained on the wiki, I just totally missed it and the broken things were driving me nuts. I don't think there is anything ingame until new plots on the block that hints at the mechanic. I've seen the random borken things post frequently enough that I would recommend making it a bit more transparent as early in-game or ss2 as possible at least.
But once you start unlocking the later plots, maintenance seems to become a non-issue for me. So just keep chugging along and you will be fine :D

Thanks I will try that and see if it works. I rather enjoy using scrap everything. But out of curiosity is there a reason you don't like using it?

In short, it breaks precombines (when many objects are compiled into some bigger objects so the game renders them faster, if that's a proper explanation). So that hits performance hard. Can lead to crashes and dead saves too.

Raze my settlement gets rid of all the junk and cleaner gets rid of most of the brambles. Raze also can change the build limit - its super handy :)

Workshop Framework or SS2 (not sure which one actually does it) can also change the build limit, so you don't need any other mods to do it.
I like Clean My Settlement - I even made a version (with the authors permission) that has the option to clean the settlement over time with the rate depending on the number of settlers, for that extra immersion value. (It doesn't remove the objects that can be scrapped normally, only brambles, trash etc)

Having problems with generators and water pumps constantly breaking in Sim Settlements 2 can be annoying. It sounds like a recurring issue that's disrupting your gameplay. While mods like Scrap Everything and Place Anywhere can enhance your experience, they might also contribute to glitches. Have you tried disabling them temporarily to see if the problem persists? It could be worth checking forums or seeking advice from experienced players to troubleshoot this issue. Also, if you're facing similar issues in real life, I recently came across water damage restoration services at https://www.alldryus.com/texas/dallas-water-damage-restoration/. They might offer some insights or assistance.

If you're having problems with generators and water pumps breaking, it isn't necessarily a SS2 issue but a Fallout 4 issue. Try rewiring them next time you're in the settlement. Or if you have a mod that expands the size of the settlement, make sure they are in the original area.
