Food for settlers consumed alphabetical order?

Last year this definitely wasn't the behavior. Is this a new change?

1- have workshop setting to consume basic food only
2- only equal number of corn, mut fruit, and tato planted across 4 settlements

= the only food item that drops/consumes is corn, resulting in large stockpiles of mut fruit and tato but low corn.

This obviously makes corn the limiting reagent for adhesive farming. I don't recall seeing this last year. Whether Conqueror outpost is yet created or not, it seems my settlers just consume food in whatever alphabetical order is available?

I'm surprised that after 4 years there isn't more documentation about exactly how settlers make their food consumption choices.

My quick google search brought up a number of adhesive farming guides that neglected to take into account that settlers actually do eat.

You'd need to add carrots to your adhesive farming strategy. Enough carrots to feed everyone at all settlements. That would leave the corn, mutfruit, and tatos to make paste with.

thus far I've been planting more corn, on theory any left over carrots would just be 'waste' while leftover corn I planted as surplus to feed settlers would still be useful for adhesive.

to save space I've been using internal corn/tato/MF plots - maybe what I need to do is turn basic consumption off. Even with survival needs on, I end up with tons and tons of cooked product in excess.. I could just store my valuable meats in a locker and let the settlers dig in on all that dog + mole meat. yum.

Funnily enough they will eat things you don't expect first.
I always collect flowers, etc for the Syringer, I don't always use it on a playthrough but I just have a habit of collecting ingredients for it.
Anyway, I've learnt that I have to store that stuff separate to the workshop as they all get eaten, especially Hubflowers, even if the bench is full of meat, etc.

Does anyone know if settlers will consume take items from containers that has been disabled? Seems like an easy workaround for safe storage if they don’t. Disabling containers does not remove their contents.

I think they only eat from the workbench. So storing in any other container should keep tasty morsels safe. Disabling that container seems like two step authentication level security.

I’ve never experienced it myself, besides them getting in my power armor, but other swears settlers have sticky fingers for more than just what is in the workshop.

Yep. But not food/water.

They'll definitely grab a better weapon (and all the ammo for it) if they are threatened from any nearby container or dead body. They seem interested in not only more damage but also ROF (DPS???) if they are given a choice. They love them some gamma guns from the buffet.

Just like fusion cores left in power armor, a settler won't take a weapon unless there's ammo available in the same container/dead body.

One test you can run to determine a settler's weapon preferences is to build a container or containers in a pop.1 settlement and fill them up with whatever weapons you like (make notes) and one of each ammo type. During an attack, a settler with a pipe pistol or hunting rifle will probably "upgrade". Compare what's missing from the container (what the settler took) with what's left.

They will always take all they ammo for whatever they choose. So if a settler grabs a minigun, she'll grab all of the 5mm ammo from that container, too. So if there's a second minigun in the container, another settler won't grab it because there is no ammo left for it.

Sure a settler may opt for a fatman over her pipe pistol if that's all that's available, but the more interesting test is to see if given the choice between a fatman, minigun, gamma gun, sniper rifle, which one will she choose?

Edit: Sorry to run off on a tangent.
