Finch Farm (it kind of just happened)

I decided to clear out the kind of meh settlement I had at Finch farm and prep a little bit for the expansion...

This sortof just kind of happened, I guess I'm constitutionally incapable of having an empty settlement once I get started.

See, nice and clean (and mostly flat thanks to the new ground pieces)

OK, I had to lay down a few farms, just as prep... I can always swap em out when the expansion drops.

Those farms are going to need plenty of water... Lets set that up too...

I may as well lay out the communal meeting area while I'm here, a couple of vendors, a bathroom, some spare beds and my typical workshop area in the back left

All fixtures function and the showers grant happiness. (Showers censored for privacy, I'm sure Settler #2142 wouldn't appreciate his naked bits published to the internet.)

Well, they needed defenses too.. just to keep the riff raff out.

And now a "basic" enclosure big enough for the tallest stuff that might be in one of the packs. I think I'll play with a nice airy open clean greenhouse style.

I should just put down a few things to help the settlement get started, maybe enough residential to support the farms when they fill out and a few commercial plots to keep the settlers occupied.

Hey farm, you've got an escapee... He's about 3 stories straight up from where he should be. How'd you even get up here little guy?

Uh oh, ran out of residential space, better build more residential plots up on top, I'll just add this Institute themed glass roof thing so they have some room to grow.

I think there's an overpass in there somewhere...

What was I doing again?

BTW, if you're building on the bridge and having trouble with navmeshes or you're like me and straight up deck the whole thing over to save the hassle, you're going to run into an issue with the settlers sinking into the decking. This is fixed with a little help from HZS EHB & WDB's (working double beds). That mod comes with an invisible solid box you can place inside of stuff to keep the settlers from spawning through the floors. I stick em in there, then sink them to just under the deck level with place everywhere. Problem solved.

Well done, I love the "clean" look of it. Perhaps a little bit too modern (solarcell inc.?`), but still great :)

Love the building diary! My co-author Myrmarachne has that problem when play-testing: 'I'm just gonna see if this new third level model works - what's that, Oberland needs my assistance?' And an hour later (real time!) he's back to modding.

lol, I definitely don't care if some settlement is being murdered on my test save. :P If I lose the settlement, I can murder them all, reclaim it, and repopulate it via console :P

While your construction is visually stunning (with great detail on the public john!) and I am impressed with the vertical design, I've found that crops and gardens grow best in direct sunlight.

Just a technical question - is there a vertical limit to settlements boundaries?

Shame there are no concrete or steel foundation pillars that could be stackable to provide legs to the project.

The idea is that the crops remain under the umbrella of all the guns on the building turrets, they still more or less get sunlight though, the sun is almost never straight overhead.

Yes to vertical limits, some settlements have higher build heights than others. Finch farm just happens to cover the overpass by default so I bulldozed the farm, wrapped the overpass entirely in greenhouse and some floor tiles, then moved all the sleeping quarters upstairs. I recall the lighthouse as being the tallest at like 17 floors but there's a few others out there that are almost as big.

I could fake some legs if I wanted to (Stackable concrete blocks or some of the stuff from snappy kits or that Cookie thing) but I figured the existing legs on the overpass are more than good enough to hold up an enclosure building mostly made out of empty space.

The building is actually made mostly out of greenhouse walls with a little help from place everywhere to get alignments to work. I used a lot of wood there for flooring too.

I'll start posting my post-2.0 rebuilds soon. Some of this stuff looks gorgeous when you leave the randomizer alone and don't jack with the building autoselections.

Haha - sorry Tankthing - I was referring to growing crops in real life I guess. Just my lame humor.

WOW Ok going to steal this [if I can figure it out lol].
:)
Looks like something I would do :)

One, you can use lights.
And yes there is a vertical limit. I think 250 something feet? [I forget]. But many use a mod that removes it.
Hope this helps :)

I'd offer you my save but it's the one I've been breaking and then bashing back together with a hammer, fo4edit, some duct tape, resaver and glue so it'd probably eat all the stuff out of your fridge, put a hole in your TV and then wreck your car and get your cat pregnant. From the random crap it does, it's probably self-aware by now.

Have you tried "transfer settlements"?

Yup, was headed there in game as I write this to see if I can get a good export of it, but... well... The lighthouse needed help, then I decided to check on the Slog to see how it was building out...

I'm pretty sure I'll get to Finch Farm sometime this week. If it loads.

The whole quick travel thing apparently gives my computer whiplash. It CTDs when I teleport to a settlement I haven't been to in a while, usually means I need to cull the herd again.

Ah ok then. Looking forward to it :)
