This is ment to be constructive criticism to one specific part of the Sim Settlements 2 mod project. I dont intend to be rude, but english is not my first language, so feel free to correct me if i am wrong. Also everything that follows is just my personal opinion and feeling about the game.

After playing a fair few hours on the latest SS2 patch and playing around with the MK1 Beacon, I have to say that i dont like it. I was really invested in the idea of "using" non settlemtn locations as part of the SS2 progression gamplay loop, but the current version of this feels like a downgrade from the old SS1 adv. Industrial Tech tree system. Here are a few points why:

  • First, I really dont like the RNG part of it. While the player has agency thorugh choosing the location and can increase the chances by using settlers with high PER/LUK, in the end its RNG If you get a new plot and which one you get. In SS1 every adv. industrial plot had a certain "path" you needed to take, to unlock it. This felt a lot more gratifying during and at the end of the gamplay loop.

  • Secound, I personally really miss the Tech Tree from SS1. The ingame Visual menu was amazing. Haveing a exploratorsy system the first time you play is awesome and In follow up playthroughs beeing able to use knowladge from past games to reach your goals faster is a great feeling for me as a palyer.


  • Thrid, the SS1 tech tree system focused on your settlemtens and your plots. You advanced by building specific plots or doing something inside an existing plot. That gave the whole mod an extra layer of deapth focused on the gameplay systems of the mod itself. In SS2 you do regualr F4 stuff like clearing a dungeon and then you plop down a beacon. Thats it. Its less focused on SS2 itself and there is not much depth to it after you have upgraded the Caravan and Coms Plots.


My suggestion would be to bring back an SS1 style techtree for industrial pots and find a different purpose for MK1 beacons.
