Does the game need to be active window for the recalculation tool?

Sometimes I open the console and alt+tab to windows (don't like to hear the grenade sound when tabbing), I noticed multiple times that when I return to the game, the formerly lagging stat windows and resources are updated while the game was in the background, even in console pause state.

So I was wondering If the same would apply to the new recalculation tool?
People say you have to run it for 3-5 hours to complete, while doing nothing and not opening workshop... Basically not playing the game.... Was wondering If I could at least use my PC during that time?

I can't even let the game run without doing nothing... it crashes...
Funny...

UPDATE: I ran the recalculator again, on a different save after emptying my ram and etc... I let it run for 4 hours now, not a single digit changed in resources panel and all my stats are still incorrect as well.. Usually when I move around the settlement and open up the workshop here and there, they would've updated already... but leaving the game still, doing nothing, as active window, even for hours, so far did nothing for me.
UPDATE 2: After I posted this, another 4 hours passed, I already restarted the game for various reasons... Started a new quest, and now there's the message saying "please stay in the area.... " Just WTF?

I said it takes a long time. The more settlements you have expect a longer wait. I go that message 24 real hours after the recalc stared and that was with a single massive settlement and no others.

I only have 2 settlements linked with vanilla SS2 caravans and 3 settlements via IDEK... 2 out of 3 of those are the same with vanilla; Sanctuary, Abernathy, Starlight...
20 settlers in Sanct, 21 in starlight and 11 in Abernathy...

I mean, I'm sorry to say this and I do not mean to disrespect the developers but this whole situation is just not practical...
I'm not a developer but may be the recalculation fix should be approached as a 3rd party offline too. Like save editors; you load your save, it scans and recalculates using full power of your pc, without the game running at the same time... I don't know, just may be... Brainstorming here...

But I will never be able to properly and correctly use it because, the game sometimes just crashes even if I do nothing, as I mentioned above and even if it doesn't crash I get error messages popped up from IDEK saying the "other" settlement's values are dropped abnormally and I should visit there and fix... The message is a pop-up so it pauses the game, so if I, say, leave the game open for 24 hours it won't even work cause some pop up message will pause the engine..

As I said... Don't mean to disrespect to anyone but this tool's usage for hours and hours... without any progress bar and/or confirmation for completion etc, just isn't practical and I can not benefit from it.
