Chapter 3 Ally factions

I've played for a bit now but haven't seen any options to ally with friendly factions like the Institute or Brotherhood. I wanted to recruit their unique troops before I finish off the gunners and was wondering if I'm missing something or is this just not implemented yet?

Have you gotten the quest "under one Banner", if so then you most likely won't get any other assistance.
Who you get depends on what you did in the vanilla game and a few other quests.
Here is information from the Wiki:

Possible Alliances & Requirements

  • Brotherhood of Steel - completed A New Dawn
  • Railroad - completed The Nuclear Options (Railroad)
  • Institute - completed Nuclear Family
  • Minutemen - completed Defend The Castle
  • Commonwealth Police Department (CPD) - quests completed
  • Nightingales - quests completed
  • New Liberty Trading Company (NLTC) - quests completed
  • Diamond City - NLTC quests completed, In Sheep's Clothing completed
  • Berman - allied with him during Sympathy for the Devil
  • Sickle - completed Suburban Disturbance, or befriended with Cannibal Perk
  • Wise - Allied with him during Runners and Gunners
  • More to be added

Thanks. I take it I can't get Brotherhood and Institute in the same playthrough? I saw the trailer and it seemed like it was a possibility so I was avoiding going too far on either side so they'd both still like me.

I sort of tried the same thing, using a Mod that let me stay friends with everyone, and all it got me was no friends to go to war with.

There's more still to be implemented there as that wiki page suggests, so maybe having BOS troops using G1 Synths as 'meat'shields will be possible eventually.
That's what I was thinking! lol

But the BoS would probably be taking more fire while the synths flank with their mobility.

I completed nuclear family and built the embassy(for the institute) and I still didn't see any kind of meeting. Do I automatically get access or is it not implemented yet, like Saito posted?

It occurs at a specific point in the storyline; Once you start quest "State of War", after completing the first step of that, you should also get quest "Under One Banner" - once that is active, eventually someone from HQ will buzz you to tell you there's someone waiting at HQ to talk to you, that is when you should start meeting people of the factions you're eligible to "ally" with.
This presently only affects the story for some choices later on, it doesn't let you recruit their troops into your actual army yet.

And yeah I don't think the Embassy room in the HQ actually does anything mechanically. I've never even seen a single NPC use it, either, but I practically never see anyone working at my HQ go down to that entire level anyway, even with that bar/dining hall the size of Hangmans Alley or all the Living Quarters I threw in just because some rooms had no other choice.

Ah ok. Do you know if Kinggath has it planned for the near future or is it a long way off still? And if so are there any other nonstandard troops besides conscripts and dogs?

I've got no further details to give except that it's almost certainly coming at some point, sadly. I have no secret insider info or whatever - only thing I've spoken to kg privately about in over a year now was trying to nail down a specific bug in CH3 that I didn't want to publicly spoil for people since it was a nasty one for ruining story flow.
It just seems like such a logical thing to add - and that second CH3 trailer seem to imply it's a thing we should be able to do - that it has to be coming eventually.

Do you know if its possible to use Automatrons as soldiers? Like if I built them at an outpost would they participate in battles? The settlers aren't a lot of help, even as bullet sponges(I train them up to rank 3 and outfit them with the best gear they can use). I usually end up taking out most of the enemies myself and getting an E anyway. Unless the enemy is very weak like mutant hounds. :scratchhead

You absolutely can. Attached picture is proof - the white-painted (mostly) baseline Assaultron I'm looking at was built using the Automatron bench and is in my military. (I always stick the M-SAT on any I build myself so I can spot them more easily)

This is fantastic! I am always for the idea of a robot army. Drawback is that they are desgned to be mortal, but some MOD may provide me with a solution for that.

So I've tried this and the robots in my outpost aren't joining assaults. Do I need to start one from GNN for this to work?

It also doesn't increase available warriors so I don't think this works.

Hm, it did work fine for me. I'm on a new game now with a different load order that's still only in Chapter 1 so I can't just check instantly.

I installed Chapter 3 mid-playthrough, could that be an issue?
I can't see how that'd matter. That screenshot I posted up there was from a few hotfix-patches ago, though, so maybe it broke since then? Also that was one of the story-mandatory assaults, not one I chose to do myself, that might be a factor too - and if I'm remembering rightly, that robot came in with a Reinforcements wave and wasn't in the initial push.
