caravan service - how does it work?

I understand that when you want to use a salvage beacon, you have to have com and cow in range

I dont fully understand how the resources work. Given 3 settlements (A,B,C) all connected via caravan service

  • If I have 1.000 steel in settlement A, can I use 1.000 Steel in Settlement C for building and crafting?
  • If I have 100 in settlement A, 100 building units in in settlement B, can I use 200 Buildings Units for assum building in settlement C?
Is that so? I guess yes, yes?

And
  • Is there a daily limit?
  • a daily max amount of steel I can use via caravan?
  • Does the distance play a role A-B-C?
  • Does storage balance over time?
  • Do they all need com plots?
my guess: no, no, no, no, no?

As long as they are linked via Caravan Plots, all settlements have instant access to as much of the Virtual Storage as they need, limited only by how much is in there. And Caravan plots do link in the vanilla way too, meaning your crafting/manual building can still use the stuff in the other workshops.

Thank you very much for explaining!

Just to be clear: I dont need vanilla caravans when I already have linked SS2 caravan plot, right?

You shouldnt. Although the Caravan auto link does only have a limited range, none of the Commonwealth settlements are so far away from ANY others to be unable to join the network - just might require taking more than you initially planned to join the dots.

Do be careful if you plan on ONLY using caravan plots that The Castle only has two settlements within caravan range - Jamaica Plains, which is infamously tiny and irregular, and Mechanist's Lair, which has plots disabled by default and only allows you to build up via a city plan.

The Castle should have more than that in range...
Warwick
Spectacle Island
Vault 88
Jamaica Plains
Boston Airport

I think Nordhagen and Bunker Hill is really close to the max range?

Ah, Warwick I hadn't tested yet. Still, if you're planning on doing the Minutemen questline, you'll want/need to grab one of those unless you want to use the base game supply route, and a few of those have hard restrictions on when you can acquire them.

Nope, the only settlements with restrictions is Boston Airport can only be acquired after the BOS arrive, Bunker Hill after the Battle/Banished, and Mechanist Lair.

I know, those are the ones I was referring to. Generally if you're doing the Minutemen quest line, none of those three will be available by the time Defend the Castle shows up, and Warwick requires a radiant quest first.

What if I'm using IDEK's Logistics Station? Do I still need caravan plots?
Currently I have it so my algorithm will override the SS2 one when used with SS2's native caravan plots, so they'll always link regardless of range just like they used to, and still using my fancy routing algorithms—but, this link is only for vanilla supply lines, and will not link up SS2's empire system, which covers virtual resources and some other things, unless the plots are within SS2's native range limit.

It's kind of a mediocre compromise, but I don't want to infringe on the SS2 vision or something.

Sadly, this does mean that my code doesn't perfectly mesh with standard SS2 caravan plots. It's written to override supply line routing from ILS plot <-> ILS plot, but ignore links between native SS2 plots <-> other SS2 plots; or, SS2 plots <-> an ILS plot, if that makes sense. However, any addon authors who make their own caravan plots are free to include a "soft" referenced Logistics Terminal as a plot spawn object, which will "opt their plot in" to be managed by my system in addition to SS2's.

You want one at each settlement - it does the links automatically between settlements that have them. Unless its one you DONT want to have access to the Virtual Storage, for some reason. (I cant think of any reason why you would want that though)

There are no other SS2 Caravan plots... there is only... IDEK!

And thanks for this post. Explains why virtual storage didn't work at the Castle. I will try to use IDEK vanilla desk at the mechanist lair and integrate it into the IDEK network. Hopefully the distance is short enough. Update pending...

Mechanists -> Castle should be in range for the core Caravan system, in my experience.
