Log spam and crashes with the latest patch (3.1.3)

Evening all,

Just this afternoon, I updated to 3.1.3 on SS, IR and RotC. I only recently started playing again and was doing so with 3.1.2. I had the odd crash if I fast travelled straight into a big settlement like sanctuary or the big screen just down the road from there. Yes, when I build I often build big, it's an addictive habit I tell ya :P
Anyway, With 3.1.2 I'd only have the occasional crash if I FT'd straight in. Walking in was fine and the game was basically stable.

However, since going up to 3.1.3 I've been crashing a lot more and in places where I'd never crash before, most recently FTing to the Yangtze or before that, on simply approaching Sanctuary on foot from any direction. Checking the logs, I've been getting a lot of spam, with up to 57k lines from papyrus where it has dumped stacks like there'll be no tomorrow, especially where SS is concerned.

I've been running the various papyrus budget tweaks etc for a while now and have managed to at least get into sanctuary after turning basically all the SS performance options right the way down and hitting "PCB" before I transitioned in to the settlement.
However, I'm still getting the crashes on fast travel in random locations now and the logs are just spammed with lines relating to SS.

Hopefully, the dropbox links come through so folks can peruse them.

What do you folks think?

After turning off performance options and then turning them back on earlier, I have similar papyrus logs and ctds on fast travel to settlements where before I had had only 1. Also am only sporadically able to see add-on plots when manually selecting plots to put down. An earlier save, prior to turning off and on the performance options but with 3.1.3 installed, doesn't have any of those issues, at least not quickly.

I have no idea what to think myself, but my mostly- okay almost entirely- uneducated guess is that, at least in my case, it has to do with lots of plots and turning the performance options back on causing a pretty large script backup.

I really don't know. On mine anyway, and if I was reading it right, it seems like I had 2 cities trying to upgrade while 3.1.3 and the performance options were doing its thing. And individual plots as well I'm sure. I tried leaving it running for a couple hours and also clearing active scripts, but I really think it was just too much for my system to handle at once.

I ended up going to an earlier save. Farther back than I wanted but not too bad. And now I'm leaving it running while I take care of some irl things. at least until the cities (Finch and Taffington) upgrade. I went settlement hopping when I loaded it up and my game seems stable again, so I'm hopeful that I'll still be able to FT to them after upgrade.

I've tried that, on the off chance that it was just too many scripts going off at once and would clear with time. However, it's just staying unstable.

Looking at your logs, it looks like you recently arrived at a settlement that has a lot of updating to do. I would do what bubba suggested - let your character sit for 10 minutes. Then save your game, and load it in Fallrim Tools to see what the ActiveScripts count is. If that number isn't going down, something is stuck - and it's usually WorkshopParent.

I guess enabling the performance options is what caused this? Because other than that, I haven't really touched anything in my settlements and they've otherwise been pretty much static lately. I was having issues with frame rate tanking in a few spots, so tried tinkering to bring that number up.

Specs wise, I think I'm pretty similar to what you've got KG, with a core i5 4440, 16GB of ram and a gtx 1060.

I loaded a few of my saves in fallrim tools and saw an active scripts count of 2. However, I'll give your suggestion a try and get back to you. Fingers crossed!

EDIT..

Well, trying that again got the active scripts down to 1 (some of your "kghelpers" scripts and an autobuilder) and got the logs down to about 3000 lines now, rather than the 30k+. I'm still getting a fair old stack of SS related lines in the log, but no dumped stacks thankfully.
FYI, I changed the file extension to .txt from .log so it'd let me upload it.

Are you only crashing on approach/fast travel to cities that are still building?

I waited for Taffington and Finch to upgrade and then tried to visit. And I'm also getting a lot of the cannot call get ____ on a none, assigning none... and so on stuff in my log. It is only happening at these 2, my active cities (Level 1 and Level 2 respectively and iirc). I have no trouble going to Level 3 Graygarden, the Castle, Greentop, etc. and the same for my self built settlements at sanctuary and spectacle. I know it was my idea but I don't think it could have anything to do with performance options as this is happening on a save that predates me click spamming them.

No. Initially, it was happening at the really big and mostly built settlements, but with 3.1.3 it spread to more and more places until I couldn't fast travel at all without a 50/50 chance of a crash.

It seems more stable than that now, but I'm still getting some log spam and the occasional crash in the usual places like sanctuary on FT. It's definitely getting there though.

Welp, just had another crash and the logs are back up to 30k lines with a load of dumped stacks.

This time, I was standing just next to the cell boundry for starlight drive in, coming from the direction of bedford station to the north east. I had been there for about 5 mins waiting for things to settle down scripts wise in that settlement when out of the blue, BAM. Ctd.

My largest papyrus log file today was 2mb, I need to get a proper viewer. My backlog seems to be resolving though. I was at 26 active scripts when I look at a save from late last night, most of which are simsettlements:asamsensor with a few other related in there as well, and am now at a respectable and happy 2.

Did nothing special, just loaded up the game a half hour or so ago and it was like a log jam immediately let loose. A bunch of plots at Taffington suddenly were built or upgraded, followed shortly after by a few more at Finch Farms and Spectacle Island.

The dump stacks aren't inherently bad, it's just a sign a lot of stuff is queued up. They are more frequent now than before, because Sim Settlements uses a thread pool, which will result in heavy stack - which is usually better than a crash - obviously getting crashes at the same time means that not only did the stack grow vertically (ie. the queue from thread pooling), but too many things fired off at once and overwhelmed the VM.

Changing the performance options does tell all of the plots to queue up for a refresh when you arrive in each settlement. If you have reduced the thread count though, it shouldn't be able to cause a crash - as the whole point of that is to redirect all of the plot calls to take turns instead of trying to run all at once. If you want to start gathering up your logs from these crashes and send me a zip of a bunch of them, I can look into them for patterns to see if there's any sign of a specific cause.

Unfortunately, papyrus is the least likely cause of crashing - so the logs are of limited use, but it's all we've got to work with right now.

I appreciate the help, KG!

I'll get some more logs from crashes bundled up for you. I'll put them up on dropbox and post the link in this thread.
I needed an excuse to play FO4 again anyway :P

Huh, well I'll be damned, it actually let me upload it here. Nice!

Here are half a dozen crash logs from this afternoon. All but one of them happened when waiting around in a settlement. The last one happened right after FT' ing into diamond city.

Triple post & Necro. Woohoo!

3.1.5 and 3.1.6 seem to have mostly fixed the crashes, though I'm still getting a fair few entries in the logs (up in the 5000+ line range). I still get the occasional crash, but it's rare.

Whatever you did on your end, KG, it seems to have worked!
Muchas gracias!
