I ignored Sneek when he issued a challenge to fistfight because I was in the middle of something else. Now he has vanished and there is no quest marker to help me find him. There was also an Asaultron standing beside him that I did not speak to. The Asaultron has also disappeared. Is there something I can do to fix this?

They ran off to chase something in combat when the settlement had hostile mobs near it.

@Bored Peon - So is that functioning as intended? Do I wait for them to come back? Do I do something else until they show up again?

Your answer also provokes another question. I always thought that when you left a cell it was frozen in stasis until you came back at which point the game would virtually generate changes representing the passage of time. But every time I come back all the water pumps are broken. It looks like they are surviving constant attacks the game is not notifying me that are occurring. Is this all working as it is intended to or is something broken that I should attempt to fix?

I have continued to play this game ignoring the fact I have been unable to complete this quest. Is this quest a non-essential side quest or is it integral to the SS2 story and critical building unlocks? Am I wasting my time proceeding with this game without completing this quest?

The 'vanilla' settlement objects like turrets and waterpumps and generators are assigned a "daily maintenance cost" in SS2, without paying it (it does this by consuming resources) they will break. I'm not sure what the cost on water pumps is... oil or gears maybe? Part of the 'magic' of Simsettlements is that it can and will do stuff while you're not there, mostly by upgrading the plots though.
Also, that quest of Sneek's is just a silly little sidequest to recruit someone new to your settlement, as far as I know. I don't think he was one of the ones that unlocks stuff by having him join. No idea about the assaultron, though, haven't even seen that one myself.
