SS2 "not working": Alternate start mod and Spectacle Island seems broken

Hello everybody!
I am new to using SS2 and to this site, so please forgive me if I posted in the wrong section ...
I am currently trying to get SS2 to work.
At first I had some issues with SS2, but after disabling all the "addons" and only loading SS2 and its requirements (with all my other mods of course, except ThematicAndPractical because SS2 does not seem to like that mod for whatever reason), I can get the SS2 workshop menu to show up.
When I start a new game with an alternat start mod (StartMeUp) and start at the RedRocket (where you meet Dogmeat), the SS2 menu shows up in the workshop mode.
(I still get the "Error on startup of SS2 detected" message, but I have read somewhere that that just means that SS2 didn't get the "time" to do it's thing because of lots of other scripts running at the start of a new game, especially with lots of mods enabled)
But when I use StartMeUp to start near Spectacle Island, I get all sorts of problems:
The "unlocking" of the workshop there seems broken. I can activate the "generator" in the boat and the big mirelurk thing shows up, but the switch at the generator does not do the little animation that it usually does.
Then when I go up to the workshop to activate the "speakers", it says something like "this currently does not work" (as if I did not power up the generator in the boat)
And the workshop can't be used either ...
When SS2 did not start properly (I went to the RedRocket settlement and the SS2 workshop menu did not show up), I could use the Spectacle Island workshop just fine ...

So there seems to be some sort of issue with SS2 and Spectacle Island ...
Is the Specatcale Island workshop "locked" by SS2 until you reach a certain stage in the SS2 quest or what is going on here?

Not part of the team, but if I had to guess, there's some script lag going on in the background. As I recall, SS2 tries to do some setup in the background at the start of a game. Normally this happens while you're doing the pre-war and leaving Vault 111 bits. If you do an alternate start like StartMeUp and skip that, the SS2 background stuff still has to run. Did you start your game on Spectacle Island and go directly to trying to claim the workshop? I'd suggest trying it again, but after the game starts, give it some time before trying to claim the workshop. Walk around, kill some 'Lurks, forage, grab the Luck bobblehead, or just sit on a chair at the dock and let the game run for 5-10 minutes or so before trying to claim the workshop.

I've been thinking about a new game start soon, so I may try this location out myself.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply!

The alternate start mod lets you create your character, same as the "normal start" (in the bathroom of Nate/Nora's house).
Then when you walk out of the bathroom, a menu pops up that lets you select the starting stats, location, gear, ...

And I get the "Failed startup" error while standing in the bathroom after creating my character.
(I also tried to activate SS2 after completing the "character creation" and actually starting in the game, but got the same "failed startup" message after a few seconds)

I tried to "give the game some time" to do all the setup stuff it needs to do before trying to unlock spectacle island.
("Clearing out" the island while at level 1 takes some time ...)

Oh, I know how StartMeUp works; love it myself. The last time I launched an SS2 playthrough I chose some perks and went mostly through the vanilla beginning (skipped pre-war and woke up in the pod).

Again, I'm not on the SS2 team nor am I versed in the nuts and bolts of modding and scripting, so unfortunately most of what I can offer is conjecture and troubleshooting. That said, going back through your post covers most of the troubleshooting questions I'd have:
  • You were able to use it starting at RedRocket (though still with error message), so: Workshop Framework is installed, it likely downloaded and installed (mostly) properly, etc.
  • You said you're only running SS2 and its requirements, so low likelihood of mod conflict or load order issues
  • Gave it time for scripts to run prior to claiming the Island workbench
As I said previously, I'm curious to try and recreate this myself, but likely won't have the chance to do so until at least Wednesday (possibly but not likely Tuesday evening).

I was able to muck around with it this afternoon. I did get the "SS2 failed to start" error, but shortly thereafter got an "SS2 recovered" message. This was all during character creation in the bathroom. I started by Spectacle Island and had no problem claiming the workbench and and launching build mode.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure why you're having trouble with the Island.
