A mysterious underground lab
Just when the caterpillar thought her life was over, she began to fly. (1)

Dr. Tatna Amari talked to herself almost continuously. Under her breath, she would whisper things to no one in particular, just her way of having an intelligent and interesting conversation with another living being even if that being was herself.
She didn’t have much interaction with the living anymore. They avoided her for the most part. So, this would do. She didn’t even notice that she did it, and the people she spoke to inside her mind were always better company than the real ones that occasionally wandered into her lab as things were nowadays.
She knew what she had to do and why it was so important, and it consumed her. The time of humankind 1.0 was over just as it had for the Neanderthals. The days for the human species are numbered and time was getting very short as the post-apocalypse numbers of unmutated humans had been in steep decline now for the past 100 years. For the species to have a chance at survival, it needed an upgrade. One greater than the 1.5 joke cybernetics that had were salvaged from the old world. The human race needed to upgrade, her upgrade to “NanoGenicKind 0.0.1.”
“Have you dreamed? A particularly deep sleep often ends that way?” She asked the corpse with the open skull cap.
“Oh, not quite being able to wake up? Humm yet, struggling to do so? Aum, are you telling yourself it is time to wake up, and it is so close, but you can’t get over the edge into conscience? Is that your dream?
Maybe, you have the feeling that your systems are testing you? What entities and what is this here in my dream with me? Don’t know, do you? Feeling like some invisible force is picking you up, but you are just dead weight? Isn’t that odd?
Are you afraid yet, to the point of panic in the way only waking dream can do?
Oh, wait, what, what now? Instead of waking, you start to fall, fall backward, sinking regressing into the abyss.
Do you scream in abject terror “please” just let me wake-up?
Let me tell you. “It will stop about the time you would think you’re going to hit bottom.”
“Then, you should get the feeling you are coming back on-line \\\:::\\\, but you don’t know what that is or what it means? Crazy, I know.”
No? “You never had this dream?”
Dr. Amari stopped talking and smiled at the inanimate corpse.
She tapped her injector.
Letting her breath out with finality, she said.
“You will.”
Then rather non-surgically she rammed the injector home.
The skin made a popping sound in resistance as the three-inch-long 6.5 gage needle penetrated……
