Outpost Assignment

Here's something I'm confused about with SS2 and Outposts. Is it beneficial to recruit someone as a soldier in order to assign them to a certain plot such as a Field Medic martial plot? I can assign a soldier or an unrecruited settler to the plot. It appears to me that such a settler is in effect a support soldier without the chance of being drafted into an assault where he might get killed.

I have to stress "appears" since a lot of this is unclear, and for all I know a settler (instead of a soldier) might simply occupy the plot without providing the benefit of a field medic facility.

When a Settler is recruited to an Outpost, they are automatically "conscripted". If a job plot is available, they will auto-assign to it. They will be assigned the Support or Guard Role when working a job plot. Otherwise, they will be assigned a Warrior Role. Although they display "Settler", they are in effect all Soldiers when assigned to an Outpost
  • Warriors do the Assaults
  • Support Role folks will defend the Outpost, and if you are using default War Settings, will not join in on Assaults.
  • Guard Role defends the Outpost.
More information is on the Wiki: Managing a Soldier

When a Settler is recruited to an Outpost, they are automatically "conscripted".

The difference is that until I actually conscript them with the clipboard, they do not have the "R) MANAGE SOLDIER" option when approaching or speaking with them. I only have standard settler dialog options. When using the clipboard, I get the Conscript option and they salute, so I don't believe they are already soldiers.

I can assign them to plots but they appear to work it as a normal settler.

I haven't compared to see if non-soldier settlers at outposts take part in assaults. I might put some in distinctive clothing so I'll realize it as soon as I spot them.

Well.. hm, going to have to follow up on this when I get my game to C3 -- since it doesn't appear to be working as per my understanding or previous experience, and follow up by asking the boss some questions. Maybe it has something to do with the Armory -- do you have one bulit in your Outpost?

I do not. Whenever I build an Armory it changes the soldiers out of the uniforms, armor, and weapons I gave them and equips them with leather coats and pipe weapons.
