Not able to exit game properly

Most odd game hangs when trying to exit. I can save in game fine. Another strange thing if I tab out and close the game window the game is still running. Is the problem with my load order or perhaps Steam? Another possibly could it be running the Fallout 4 script extender to launch the game and Steam doesn't like it?

Typically, when this happens, your RAM and processor have not completed processing information. This is buffer overflow. You can try to let it finish or CLT-ALT-DEL, open task manager, find FO4, right click and end task. If you can turn off exit save. What is causing this could be a laundry list of things but script extender is a good guess.

I always do a save before I exit the game, as I have had F04 hang upon doing a quit/desktop (which is supposed to do an exit save). Then I have to go the task manager and kill the process as it is now unresponsive.

I also do a save before I exit doors that jump between cells (like exiting Olivia or BAFTL) because they will always crash out on me. I get back in and pull that save up and the game will continue normally (door opens, cell updates and I go on).

I follow the guideline for using MODs by following Fallout 4 Load Order Framework: A Vault Dweller's Load Order Survival Guide.

The guide states that you should NOT use an exit save, when loading a game, and only use save that you created. I always save before I quiet. When I restart, I delete the exit save and use the last one I created.

They also suggest turning off auto saves. The guide is long but very useful.

Turn off the exit save I even go as far as turning off auto saves most of the times as exit saves and auto saves tend to have bloat compared to a hard save.

Pretty much this is my standard as well although I’ve never read that specifically but if you have been around a while on nexus there has been a lot of discussion about exit and auto saves And why you should not use them. If it’s hanging up when exiting you may have a mod in the game hanging stuff up. I used to get this when running ss2 with a couple other script intensive mods and a large save file size.

Turn off the exit save
Is that an ini setting? I did find the option to turn off auto saves. (I'm pretty sure it was in the game menu)

It has been said often over the years (and by people more knowledgeable than me) that you should never use auto saves, exit saves or quick saves.

Sorry forgot you can’t turn off exit saves I just delete them , there is an ini setting though but I try not to mess with to much stuff in there unless I know what it does.

At least they are named "exitsave" unlike the auto saves. ini settings are generally ok if you know what the setting actually changes and how it will affect your game. Its more "buyer beware" due to the amount of misinformation out there. Plus the fact that a good many settings are redundant remnants leftover from earlier games that have no effect on the game at all.
