Negative Happiness in Sanctuary Hills

I'm really tempted to just kill all my settlers at this point.
I have 4 recreational plots focused on happiness (on top of like 3 other recreational plots for training)
4 Commercial plots producing happiness
Water and food needs are met
There's enough power to go around.
Industry is going well
Not everyone has houses but there's plenty of beds.

What do these ungrateful gits say to me?
"C'mon boss, this is no way for people to live."
"I didn't have much in diamond city but it was still better than this."
"Not to sound ungrateful or anything BUT blah blah jobs blah blah houses blah blah"
Sad sigh "This is no home for the mechanist..." (This one hit me the hardest)

All bars are full except recreation (For some goddamned reason) Happiness and defenses.
I'm waiting for happiness to get full so I can upgrade my defense plot.

Seriously, what do these guys want from me? A Playstation?

More defense so you can upgrade plots. I find that two to three defense plots is good. Low defense will block upgrades and it becomes a chain reaction.
Low defense means food and water plots ill not upgrade.
Food, water, and defense upgrade recreation plots.

Their remarks will change at 70% happiness. Least ya aint got the guy that tells you it is a shithole.

But doesn't food and water plots need happiness to upgrade as well?

My favorite one is the guy who says "this settlement isn't as shitty as some!" like it's the highest mark of praise he can bestow :P

I think one of my favorites was the comment about "I dont know why they need beds, I slept in a box in the alley" or something like that, lol.

I really like the wider range of comments on settlements.

I want to say no. Only homes, industry, and commerce need happiness if I remember right.
There was a SS1 spreadsheet with all the values, I doubt they changed the system.
well I'm pretty sure they need them now as they have the red frowny face on their UI. I built some defenses to make the shield bar go full and I'll see if any of the plots upgrade when I come back.

I have a little less than 48 hours in this playthrough and only one plot has upgraded so far. A recreational plot on my 2nd settlement for endurance training. And I've had plots like an hour into this playthrough.

Also I just got the "This place is shithole" guy.
And I've also had the "I'm drug high and this place still looks like a shithole" dude for a while now. Just forgot to quote him.

I have a guy whose 'high happiness' line is something like "If I didn't have to keep moving, I'd totally live in a place like this." He's been there for months in-game. (and lives in a house better than mine IRL but that's besides the point)

My sanctuary is mostly level 3 buildings now, recently I've started replacing some of those level 3s with level 1 advanced versions of farms and martial plots (and was super happy to learn there wasn't a dip in resource gains by doing so!).

My big issue has been power connections. i generate plenty of power, but some of the buildings on the far side of the settlement don't seem to receive any of it. Not sure whats up with that, but it's super annoying :/

I did have to start tearing down buildings as upgrades happened though so I wasn't incurring the penalties from all of the upgraded buildings. Rec plots specifically were my big issue, they start off as 1 for 1 with the settler, and by the end they are 3 to 1 with settlers, and you can remove a bunch of them and keep the bar full, and save yourself al the plot costs from those.

Am I doing something wrong?

This is really annoying.

oh and about the power thing. I see it happening a lot as well. I just rewire the closest power line and it usually fixes it.

EDIT: Well, it finally happened. While trying to fix something the constant barrage of complaints from the unique settlers just made me snap and go nuts. Killed everyone in Starlight Drive-in while deleting the old Paul and the other essential NPC.
Emptied a clip into each of them, then I shot all the ASAM sensors.

was very tempted to not reload my save.
