Medical Grade Plastics quest?

I've solved the fuse box issue but what now? There's a few machines I can interact with in the lab but I'm mystified as to what I'm supposed to do with them. I hit the red button upstairs and I'm told the Material Feeder is empty. I activate the Material Feeder and nothing happens.

I've refreshed the plot and searched all over the building and I can't find anything pointing to the next step. Is there a next step? It feels like I should be able to use the building now for something cool but I've no idea how to start. I talked to the person that worked there but they just have the same old trade gear dialog. What am I missing?
 
For the quest to advance you need to wait a while (can't remember how long) and the quest will alert you to some research which you can replicate. You can put raw food items in the sink, bunsen burner, pestle & mortar, and steam plate to change them. These items then get put in the ingredients mixer which produces and item which you put in the machine upstairs, which then makes a sample appear downstairs which you can try. If you haven't made a valid recipe you'll likely need to save yourself via one of the aid devices.

Thank you! This is the first building I've gotten to this point so I was a bit confused. The Google Doc is very helpful as well.
