Max # of RotC settlements?

Hi all -
I'm new to the forums and I apologized if this has already been asked, but I couldn't find an answer:
How many automated settlements (thru Rise of the Commonwealth) can you expect to operate at the same time without any issues on a high-end PC?

I recently bought a new, high-end PC almost entirely to play Fallout 4 better. I can run the game just fine on ultra settings, but recently the game has started to have some CTDs. I think it's because I've increased the number of automated settlements (probably about 1/3 of them). I've avoided automated settlements that are near one another (Example: Sanctuary, Red Rocket, and Abernathy are all handmade) and I avoided setting up too many new settlements at. Performance had been great, so I started automated a few more. That's when I noticed that performance started to slow down when interacting with sim settlements menus.

Anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone else had issues with too many automated settlements and % they could handle. I can certainly provide more details if anyone cares.

Thanks!

If you are haveing issues I would recommend manual upgrade, that way you can control when they upgrade and you can see them as they upgrade as well:)

As far as I understand things, there isn’t really any limit to having settlements (RotC cities). There are many things to avoid in the process of getting them. As you mentioned, working the triangle of death (Sanctuary/Red Rocket/Abernathy) can easily cause problems if you try to have more than one as a city. It also seems to be a good idea to not have more than a couple “growing” toward level 3 at a time, and don’t do things like constantly fast travel between them.

Things can also change depending on what settings you have.

But, just straight having too many cities shouldn’t be an issue, especially if you have a solid system.

I haven’t really had any problems purely with number of cities and I’m on Xbox One X

I didn't know for sure that fast traveling a lot would cause issues, but it does seem to be that the CTDs occur most often when fast traveling into a settlement. In general, I had started to fast travel to a place nearby the settlement, especially if I'm going there to defend it, just in case. It does seem to help, but it's hard to say for sure.

I also seem to have strange behavior with my settlements and I'm not sure if its related. For example, my build limit will show as maxed (even though when I check I'm at over 250% default) and the the cities seems to be incomplete. I don't have the option enable to "respect your limits" so they should keep building. What I mean by incomplete is that a settlement will not have enough beds or working plots for the settlers (one I'm having particular issues with is Finch Farm) even though it's already at maxed out level. I've tried refreshing and everything else, but doesn't seem to help.

Anyway, thanks for the input Marc. Since you're running on an Xbox, I'm pretty sure I'm not running into a technical limit from hardware anyway.

Ok, I'll give that a shot. Thanks.

By the way, do you know if I were to remove a leader from a settlement, would it reduce the script load or is it pretty minimum once the settlement is level 3 already?

not sure about that ,maybe if they are leaders you summon patrols

The other thing to think about is whether you are using the complex or optimized versions of the city plans. The Level 3 complex versions of plans like Finch Farm can be very intense in terms of engine impact, even for higher end PCs.

Fast travelling directly into a Level 3 Complex City Plan based settlement while an attack is happening is just about as intense a strain on the engine as you can get out-of-the-box while just playing, as far as I can tell.
