Max Active Plugins

Just wondering what the max active plugins folks have been running the game with, just noticed mine is ridiculous in my eyes but the game seems to still play fine

I don't think I've ever even hit 200, and that includes when I was trying to build a load order of "include every weapon from past Fallout games".
(gave up on that though and settled on "just install MCAM and Combined Arms, that'll cover most of it" instead)
 
254 - max esm + esp plugins
4094 - max esl + esp flagged esl plugins
There is a max number of ba2 archives that can be loaded, but I can't remember how many... IIRC, if you exceed the max number, you get the infinite black screen when loading the game.

Edit: I found this little nugget.
If you have 243 active plugins each with at least one BA2 archive, the game doesn't crash.
If you activate one more plugin with at least one BA2 archive (so 244 in total), you get the BA2 limit crash.

I'm sitting at 371 total plugins for now. I'll get back to you when I add a few thousands ESL plugins :D
I found this little nugget.
I've seen a lot of back and forth about the BA2 archive limit in the past, but I'm also seing this number (243 active plugins with at least one BA2 archive) from Poet's latest posts on Discord. I'm glad we have it figured out because there's quite a few users who manage to exceed the limit.

That's the source of the "nugget." I have never had more than 100 active plugins so I have not encountered this. I find it interesting that some crazy power of Todd keeps this number from being 254 as you would expect. There may be some polluted data IF Skyrim handles this differently from FO4 as well. I'll just trust claims made by those in the know.

This is why Cathedral Assets Optimizer is key. I group my BA2s by putting sets of them in one place and having Cathedral Assets Optimizer consolidate them for me. It's pretty easy - it will unpack all the archives and then repack all of them for you.
 
Also I would say when I am in my full (i.e. non-testing) playthrough mode I hover around 400. Mostly because of Creation Club Content, City Plans, and patches for things like Caliber Complex or ECO.
