Fallout FrankenFood

So Tatos, every settlers dream food, are a cute combo of Tomatoes and Potatoes and a final word on how to pronounce it. :grin But I've been thinking about fallout food a lot lately, and I'm thinking about the psudo-science and/or real science that could back them up. Tomatoes have a history of being a good tough plant, and Potatoes are a root veggi that are also notoriously tough while still quite filling. A little bit of mingling over 200 years AND a good dose of rads and Tatos are really not difficult to believe in at all.

So i'm wondering, what else do you guys picture out there?

Listing of the lore friendly ideas first.

1) Children of Bob
  • Trees give off a drug like sap
  • Fruit has medicinal antivirus properties
  • Tastes like 100 year old Ghoul
2) Salient Green
  • Base molecular structures of at least 11 different plant cells created by Big Mountain Research and Development Center.
  • Would be easy to justify as the requirement for quite a few plants that shouldn't be in the commonwealth but are found in the Capital Wasteland and/or the Mojave Wasteland
  • Would be hard to justify its existence outside of the Big MT. Would jars of super plant goo even make it so far east?
  • Slap on some really high science requirements and boom you have plenty of off the wall agriculture plots for SS. (An agriculture lab?)
3) Most of the Spices and Herbs in FO3 and FO4
  • Hard to justify the desert centric ones in anything except by merchants. But then again, trade is *precisely* about bringing new items into areas that don't have said items.
  • I wonder how hard it would be to create a settlement that only exists to send trade routes to? Maybe a port on the South East part of the map, south of Warwick? Or maybe Warwick?

Potatos and Tomatos are related at least. Both are nightshades. But that doesn't have to mean anything :D
Why shouldn't the FEV affect plants? And in plants, they might actually retain the ability to procreate. At least via offshoots.

Bananas might be interesting. They are high in iodine, and there is a lot of radioactive iodine-131 in nuclear fallout. So if they evolve to live with the radiation, they would be quite radioactive.

Who says that with FEV you can't cross plants with animals? On the plus side, you have a tree which grows meat. But then, sometimes you get the feeling that it's staring at you. Or, to get creepier, there's some old russian joke: cross a melon with a cockroach, you cut it open, and the seeds run away on their own. I think some movie had something similar with a cactus once, where insects erupted from it. It could be a hybrid organism which starts off as a plant and creates bugs, or some sort of symbiosis.

Speaking of symbiosis, you could imagine plants which entered some sort of symbiosis with the FEV, and collect it in their fruits. You eat one, and turn into a Super Mutant. You could have tribes of jungle-dwelling supermutants then.

On a less serious note, FEV plants could look like this: http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/228/470/e69.png

I was thinking of something similar once I found out that mole rats were like coach-roaches in real life according to a study. That is, they're tough little critters who can pretty much survive anything, even a nuclear fallout. And they also have the ability to be immortal under the right conditions. So I kept on thinking of which other animals would realistically survive a fallout, that fallout apparently got right.

I think some plants from there would also do well... those turnip-like plants called Xander Roots. They look like white large turnips to me, to be honest. And well, Turnips can pretty much grow anywhere... so it doesn't make sense that it would only be a desert plant.

NV also had fresh pears, fresh carrots, fresh apples and fresh potatoes. something I also think could easily grow in the commonwealth if given the chance. There was pinyon nuts too, but those could only be found with vendors and there was no plants for them in NV which makes me think it was a import from outside of the desert. Who's to say that those nuts couldn't be imported to the commonwealth via vendors too?
There was also the Peppers and the Pinto Beans, also found in NV.

And speaking of animals, I always wondered why Bighorners wasn't found in the commonwealth too. They seem to be hardy little beasts that can live in NV pretty well, but I think they would do well in a place that had more plants, etc.

I'd like to have pigs. The wild Radboar, an ugly, misshapen thing, basically a mess of thick leather and fat on four legs, with several tusks sticking out of the front side, which charges anything what comes too close. Mmmh, rad-bacon.

Blahblah....

You just want to justify rad-bacon

I think Coconuts would be high on fruits that could survive. That outer husk with some FEV could protect the meat and seed while the coconut is floating on the ocean, and real coconuts are very saline resistant.

And I for one would love to see some coconut/banana crossover. A Cocoana, part meal, part outback weapon.

Actually, let's take symbiosis to a fallout extreme.

A fast growing plant that lets its leaves soak up rads so the rest of the plant can remain healthy and some kind of insect that cuts away the irradiated leaf for itself.
But what would it need the leaf for is the question. Maybe food or nesting? Or some kind of defense, like armor? Lots of fallout animals would have instincts that would send them away from eating anything irradiated.
Or... maybe its the work that is the trade. The plant makes some sweet food for the ... lets go with radstag... radstags know that if they tear away the irradiated leaf they will find fruit. So the plant has this small canopy of leaves that soak rads and the stags come in, tear away the leaves so they can get at the fruit. That would make a good bush-like plant for something grape-like.

Ant like colony that hides inside that cactus, who have drones who have zero radiation resistance whatsoever and are used to grab dieing parts of the plant and just haul them away and die themselves. They care for the cacti and the cacti shares its water supply along with some sweet nectar it creates from its flowers.

Polychaete from the sea (thinking about Far Harbor) would create absolutely TERRIFYING sea monsters, on the hybrid animal/plant front. Altho in this case more of a plant that has achieved limited mobility and intelligence, not that you need much of either when you are coming out of the sea onto the beach and start devouring whatever trash you can find. Get a big colony that has learned hive mentality or just the power of
cooperation and have some PowerCore at the center and you've got something seriously scary even if its not a real mobile threat. First survivor that learns that the WyrmCore (named it off the top of my head) explode when you shoot them is going to die, and then all the strewn about worms all find a fresh body to latch onto and you have a regenerating threat that I'm going to stop talking about because I want to sleep.

Nope, fuck that. What about carnivorous plankton? Just a cloud of water that skeletonized anything that falls into it. BUT highly useful because they actually digest radiation as a part of their sexual reproduction. Males glowing strongly attracts mates and the more said glowing Hefner has children the more the radiation is dispersed (to the eggs?) and as a byproduct they would automatically be cleaning the water as the colony grows. If you farmed them right, you could keep population control while filtering clean water into one bottle and irradiated dead plankton in the other.

Giant spore plants from FO2 and FO3NV would make an awesome disaster for Settlers to deal with.
