Do you leave guards behind when you liberate settlements or conquer places?

I am always running short of warriors in outposts do to leaving guards behind. I have been using the default settings but am thinking of reducing the numbers left behind to minimum or even none. Is the chance of them been retaken that high to leave so many behind? So far I have not encountered the Gunners trying to retake lost ground.
Just a question of those of you that have played your way through and your thoughts.

I usually leave 2 or 3, that way it only takes a couple of days to recruit enough to replace them.

On my most recent playthrough I set the number of guards left behind to zero. I did this because of the particular glitch I was experiencing in that run that the only warriors who would report to battle for me were unique settlers, companions turned into warriors, or named settlers like Blake Abernathy, and therefore I had an extremely limited pool of irreplaceable warriors for my frontliners - so after every victory I would then go and see if I had any surplus nameless settler warriors knocking around my camp who could be sent on patrol duty to the newly conquered territory or vassal. I usually only sent one or two.

I was never aware of the gunners reconquering any of the territories, but some territories disappeared from my list before I had the opportunity to send guards there - I don't know if that was due to a glitch or if the Gunners were capable of responding within mere minutes to the opening I left.
