Constantly crashing

I'm not sure if simply disabling would do anything, I straight away and deleted my entire load order (had them favorited for quick finding and re-downloading again), and I am currently re-downloading and playing with 5-ish mods at a time for about a quest or so, then adding 5-ish more mods, and repeating, waiting for the crashes to start again so I can figure out what mod was doing it. So far I'm up to 22 mods. I had 50 when it was crashing like all hell.

But as for without mods, once I deleted my load order, I wasn't constantly crashing. Hence, the adding 5-ish mods back at a time and playing enough to determine crashing or not. So far so good.
Ok cool - I didn't catch that you deleted them all. Glad you're making some progress, I hate to see my stuff ever break someone's save. Keep us posted on what you find, if we can warn people away from a particular mod, or if you determine it was a bug caused by Sim Settlements, I'd like to resolve it.

Yes it is.
Can you try on a fresh save in that same settlement? Or if that will take too long, maybe another character you have already? Will tell us if it's a save file issue or a conflict in your load order.

So far this is all taking place in sanctuary. Last night my last attempt was all mods removed except unofficialfo4 patch, ss and ss manager.....game crashed after placing 7 agri plots.... I went to bed.
I'm working off fresh saves. Today, I've removed all mods except unofficialfo4, SS, RofC, Sim settlement manager. (Btw, when I don't use SSM, I have no desk plot). Did a global self destruct ( in case this problem was arising from all my settlements rebuilding at once).
Started with city leader build, game crashed.
Unplug my Xbox and trying again. If this fails I'll try another settlement.

Yeah, nope. Still crashing constantly if I disable or remove Sim Settlements and everything associated with it. Guess it's not that mod, just gotta go through my 48 other mods to figure out why this is happening. Thanks anyways.

The whole game is unstable as hell. I'm constantly crashing when changing POV, try to trade with a character, in workshop mode or sales windows. Right now it's annoying as fuck. But it's not always the same. A few hours ago, I could play without crashing even once.

The only thing that makes me even suspect SS or ROTC is that crashes happen mostly in SS or ROTC villages.

Here's my best guess:
The Sanctuary build contains around 3000 manually placed pieces at level 3. At level 2 this is only slightly reduced.

Think about the load this one settlement puts on your machine. Add in 2k more records each for Red Rocket and Abernathy.

We are working on optimization passes for all settlements which will be out soon that will reduce the workload for console and lower capability PCs and which will absolutely mitigate a good chunk of the framerate hits. Further, the code itself is under active development to reduce bottlenecks, fix outright crashes and otherwise add a ton of quality of life to the playthrough. Make sure you're running the latest version of the mod (3.02 as I write this) as well since quite a few of the more annoying issues have been corrected already.

It's not like I haven't played the game before though. I've owned it for a year and other than the occasional every few days crash, it was fine. However crashes every five minutes isn't fine, there's something wrong.

I'll be the first to acknowledge that the initial launch of RotC is triggering a lot of these issues - it's going to take more rounds of optimization to make this run perfectly on all machines, especially on Xbox. I have a save with all 24 settlements built through the system and it has never crashed (well aside from testing the limits of the donation system) - so I know it's possible to get there.

This is the unfortunate nature of pushing the limits of a game engine, the original developers already did so, and now we're trying to do so again on top of it. It's almost a damn miracle mods run at all on console! If the crashes and bug hunting are killing you inside, it's probably worth holding off on the city building feature for a while. Now that I'm aware of all of the issues people are suffering, it's just a matter of time before I can solve them all.

Oh no no no! Don't worry, I'm not blaming you or anything. I was just responding because I was quoted. I'm still testing out my load order because I had to sleep, so I'm not sure what's causing it as of now.

Disabling the mod will remove all of the records from your save, but sometimes it takes saving once without the mod to clear all of the junk. Since you can get in for a bit before the crashing starts, try this:

1. Disable Sim Settlements and any related mods.
2. Load your save.
3. Manually create a new copy of the save.
4. Load that manual save, and let your character just sit somewhere away from your settlements and see if you can get past that 10 minute mark, if so, try going to a settlement.

I was also having this problem, but not just in settlements, everywhere. It happens no matter what I'm doing. Activating a NPC? Crash. Looking ahead? Crash. Looking at the floor? Crash. Interacting with literally anything? Crash. Going to save? Crash. Etc, etc. This continued even though I followed your steps.

I don't even know if this is RotC (though the timing of me starting to use the mod lines up perfectly), but this is quite infuriating. I'm going to just disable RotC for the next day or so, if the crashing stops, then it's definitely RotC. If it doesn't, then I guess it's not your mod. I'll update in about a day or so.

@skyequakes If you disable all of your mods from the Load Order screen, does the crashing stop from activating things? If not, try the "leave your character somewhere for 20 minutes not in the pause or pipboy menus" and see if the crashes still occur when you do things after that.

If the crashes continue after all that, the save file is probably just too far gone - this is pretty rare, but if it is the case, you'll at least save your self all of the hassle of testing every combination of your mods.

So, after all that... anticlimactic and boring news. After re-downloading and enabling every mod I had favorited for easy re-download, apparently I missed 10 mods, 'cause now I have 40. I've remembered 5, and re-downloaded 4 of them. I don't need the 5th anymore, so. The good(?) news is that none of those 40 seem to be the problem, and the 40 include Sim Settlements & RotC. The bad news is I have no idea what was causing it. It also can't be the save considering I didn't make a new one to test, just continued on with my save, and the crashing stopped once I deleted my load order. I have no idea what I'm missing, but things seem to be working now.

I'm doing one final thing, which is actually using SS & RotC again. Post-load order deleting, I downloaded and enabled them, but didn't bother with settlement stuff. I'm going to activate them now and see if the crashes start up again or not. I'll update sometime tomorrow, so far it's been a couple hours with them active and doing stuff and I've only crashed once, at the beginning. That could just be normal though, crashes every now and then are pretty normal for me.

(Also sorry if this is considered spam, wanted to collect all the quotes together so I could easily refer to this comment of mine to refresh my horrible memory.)

Thanks for the update! Sometimes just re-organizing the load order is enough to fix crashing - so it may have been no mod at all, or it could have been the SS code triggering a series of unfortunate events.

Keep an eye on your save file size, I'm working with some people in another thread, and we're trying to identify the cause of a few save files exploding in size. A healthy save file should never pass 40MB (unless you have a pretty insane load order).

..Do you know how I can check my save file size on Xbox One?

Oh shoot - forgot about Xbox. There's a way to look at the files on Xbox, but I don't actually know how.

So far as I know, there is no way to check the size of individual save files, because the Xbox saves all save files in the same file :|

Go to the Xbox dashboard, find Fallout 4, press the menu button, and then select "Manage game". Go to "Saved data" and you'll find a file named for your gamertag. That's your saved games, but it lumps them altogether. I suppose you can roughly estimate the size of particular save games by simply dividing the file size by the number of save games it contains, especially if you know that all the save games should be a similar size. Alternately, you can delete all but one save game to get a more precise number.
