I think this was fixed in the year 1 pack. I would see if it works from there rather than the original mod.

I don't believe the animations work on the plot. It's not likely something I'm going to fix soon as 90% of the time you're not going to be standing near them to ever notice when using the flares. The only thing I was able to fix fairly easily was making them count towards allowing you to fire artillery.
