I like the gunner attacks and honestly they are pretty brutal, especially considering that I'm on survivor with damage bumped up for both player and enemy (a lot of one-shot deaths all around and armor is mostly cosmetic, lol). However, sometimes I like to leave my outposts for a bit and when I return for a defend mission a lot of upgrades happen while the battle is going on, leading to some bad frames. It doesn't help that I overbuild my settlements because I lack self discipline. I turned off wait for me but it seems like there is still something going on the moment you get back.
So my suggestion is a delay, maybe 2-3 minutes after you arrive, just so you can prepare and let things load in properly. I know vanilla never put a delay on but... this is why we play ss, right?
Also, from a more "hmmmm, this could be a fun mechanic" sort of view: preemptive strikes. Although then you would need to start adding an espionage element. But a thought anyway.
