Question Reaching the Script Limit - Maybe?

So. On my current run I have a bunch less mods than on my last, but on this I have Conqueror with the BoS Faction Pack. I made it to level 19, almost 20, hardly any problems. I install The Machine and Her quest mod and then I started to have issues. It keeps crashing with a "Fallout4.exe has stopped working" Windows error. Over on the TMaH Discord the general consensus is that I am running into the script memory limit and that Conqueror is the cause.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but if its freezing like this instead of a good ol' CTD, it means you're hitting the script data usage cap

I had way more mods installed on my last run with out crashing.

I had TMaH, Outcast and Remenants (my own version with the loose files packed properly) , Chaotic Sun, etc

Do you have any script heavy mods? Things like Sim Settlements, or AI behavior overhauls like Pack Attack for instance?

Always use SS with Workshop Framework, this run I have Conqueror with the BoS Faction Pack.

Conqueror with the premade cities can hit the cap on it's own

Oy, so 16 gigs of system memory isn't enough? O.o

It's not your rig, theres a hard cap within the game engine itself for script usage(edited)

64Mb I think

Yeah, that's why I can't run Conqueror. It's a good mod, but it wrecks my game hardcore.

So. Two questions. One, are they right, and two * if * they are right how do I fix it? I would hate to have to start over at level 20 just so I can uninstall Conqueror and the BoS Faction Pack *just* to get my game stable again. >.<

But it-is-what-it-is now.
I think 16Gb of ram is fine.
I don't think you have reached your script limit. Still, it is a good idea to check your Save File for other problems. Below is a video link for how to do that:

I think your problem is either a mod conflict or some other goofiness in your save file "like too many active scripts?"

This isn't how it should work from a logic standpoint?

"I install The Machine and Her quest mod and then I started to have issues."
If you already have Conqueror installed and played to level 20 and things are good? Why say you have to start over. Just roll back your save and uninstall The Machine and Her quest mod?

You can try moving it to the bottom of your loadorder? But, If this continues to be a problem the primary solution is to:
1. Roll-Back your save to a point before installing:
AGNISNikaCola01.esp=1
AGNISNikaCola01_VIS-G_Patch.esp=1
2. Once rolled back - deactivate the plug, as what you are describing sounds like some type of mod conflict.

I would hate to have to start over at level 20 just so I can uninstall Conqueror and the BoS Faction Pack *just* to get my game stable again. >.<

Thousands of people use Conqueror, at a minimum, I would try to figure out why your game became unstable "After installing The Machine and Her quest mod?"

:acute

I agree with raybo, if the problems started after adding a new mod, then the issue isn't conqueror.

I see a buttload of patches for so many mods on that list.

You will definitely have to run a script check. I would run one on a save before you added TMaH, then run one after adding TMaH.

Well, that's why I went to them first and you all second. Alright, off to watch a Youtube video, the one Ray linked. As I ran TMaH on my last run with no crash issues so I found it odd. I had let Loot sort it and it went back to the same place as on my last run and it ran just fine. O.o

Lol, well from what I know of most mod authors, there aren't that many that would ever say that it is their mod causing issues.

never read as much garbage in a single thread as those responses you linked. whatever that is, it's not really a good place to go for help.
in terms of your load order, there's a ton in there i would kick to the kerb, not least the valdacil series. they haven't been updated in so long and are obsolete now. if you've got many more mods like that, which aren't updated then i'd start by pruning them out of your load order.

raybo linked to a post from thuggysmurf yesterday which goes over some basics about load order and what mods to use. i read it yesterday and it's basically my own strategy simply written down. go and take a look at that and look to weed out mods in your load order that aren't updated and have lots of unanswered questions.

it's imperative that if you run a mod list, you run a series of mods that are supported. simsettlements is supported like no other. those people cryarsing about how they can't run it on their systems don't have a clue what they're doing. it runs fine on a variety of machines i've got, including some seriously old, outdated hardware. all you have to do is respect the limits of the machine, and more importantly, the game engine.

also, no matter what people say - its really not a good idea to install a mod into a current play through. if you want to try a new mod, start a new game. the game engine isn't really designed to have stuff loaded up/removed during an active game.
if you've got vortex, then simply create a new profile with a new mod list and play a new game with it. if you want to go back to your other game that doesn't contain a specific mod, just load that profile. that way you can have several load orders, one per profile and it's easy-mode.
i'd suggest that if you want to play the machine and her, or any of those longer quest mods, like those from thuggysmurf or whomever, install them, start a new game, and go from there. it's far healthier for your game, and it will save you nightmares later on when a game loses all stability.
it takes a certain amount of fortitude to not simply add mods to a current game - but it will save you so much pain going forward.

1ae0bfb8 - Then what would you recommend to replace Valdacil to sort inventory and such? Weightless ammo and junk should be easy, plenty of mods AFAIK do that, but only Valdacil sorts and gives me a breakdown of the components in a piece of scrap / junk. As for load order I let Loot sort it then I resort it according to what I know, like WSFW above SS and weather mods to the very bottom with the Bash patch last. Every mod in my mod list I use in some way or another. I can't just willy nilly remove mods with out some sort of replacement. >.<

As for adding / removing mods mid play, some mods you have to, like the PipPad, it cannot be running until after the vault escape, it breaks the whole 'pick up the pipboy and use it' part of the escape. It says so right on the mod page,do not install until after you've left the vault.

As for the video Ray linked to it shows him using Fallrim to peek at the save file. The last save, the crazy one, has over 250 active scripts, most of them start with "simsettlements-simplot" or 'simsettlement-simparentscript' . So for some reason SS went nuts on the active scripts all of a sudden. O.o

Edit: Further poking shows that Autosave 8 at 2:06am, saved near to Arcjet, has 26 active scripts yet Autosave 9, at 2:07am, near Greygarden, has 194 active scripts. Guess I'll roll back to Autosave 8 and avoid Greygarden. O.o

To clear things up, if you hit the script data limit the game won't load, it will just sit at the load screen forever.
The freezes you are getting are likely being caused by the 250 active scripts.
It looks to me like you uninstalled something without rolling back and that is what's causing havoc?
Look at your save file again and see if you have suspended stacks, and how many?

Umm. I've not uninstalled anything in the current play through, nothing that would count. I unchecked the dummy ESP that loads up the Texture Optimization Project ba2s I made as it was conflicting with the Fallout 4 Seasons BA2s. I did that pretty early, shortly after leaving the Vault and going "Why isn't it looking wintery? Oh! Maybe ToP is messing with it. *uncheck and load FO4* There we go! " But, 190 Suspended Stacks according to Fallrim.

Oh and it's not a freeze, it's a "Fallout4 has stopped responding" Windows force shut down crash.

Edit : Oh and just for giggles, Autosave 8, 4 Suspended Stacks, Autosave 9 (1 min later), 186 Suspended Stacks. And that was just a walk from where I fast traveled to, Arcjet, to Greygarden.

How do you know this?
190 suspended stacks is the end of that save, there's no coming back from that.
You can go through all your saves with fallrim until you get back far enough that you have no suspended stacks and a small amount of active scripts.
Start over from there and if you get a warning about missing mods reinstall them.
Or start fresh, either way your save in it's current state is fucked.

As I have no uninstalled / missing mods, only uninstalled the dummy ESP for ToP's BA2s. I can go back to save 1 in Wyre Bash and it will only show ToP 19 All DLC.esp as the only missing mod. Now it is interesting that I go from Autosave 8, where I fast traveled to Arcjet, only have 4 Suspended Stacks and 26 Active Scripts and a minute later, near Greygarden I suddenly have 194 Active Scripts and 186 Suspended Stacks. Greygarden is suppose to be built up by Conqueror.

Having a lot of active scripts near a settlement is normal. A save is a snapshot of where you are in game currently, if there is a lot going on the save will reflect that.

the game save you've got is as phil put it - 'fucked'. there's really no coming back from that to be honest.

you can fight with it, as much as you like, but the game is broken and it will only get worse the longer you play it and try to fix it.

if i were you, i'd look at your load order, remove anything you don't need, remove anything that has been abandoned, or not updated in a good while, trim the fat. you want a mod list that contains mods that are maintained, proven to be stable and don't clash with each other. read thuggysmurf's article it contains all you need and more to make a stable game. it's what i've been doing for the last 18 months or so and on my last play through i got to level 120 with only minor hiccups which are documented in these forums.

bottom line is this - simsettlements and its own assorted dlc is as stable as you like - it has to be as it has to be able to run on xbox. you have to pay attention to it - don't run it flat out and overload the game engine because that's just asking for trouble. ensure that your mods are stable and supported and proven to work and a lot of your issues will go away.

start a new game, and don't add/remove anything do/from it until you get to a point where you think "i'm done with this".
and make use of vortex and its profile features, or whatever mod manager you are using so that you can switch between games and load orders.

I can't recommend you a replacement for valdacil's sorting, as i don't use em. once they were abandoned i removed them out of my load order completely. stability is my only goal.

I'm not looking for perfect stability, as long as it runs most of the time. All the mods I have I use in some fashion or another, well, except Howitzer Island, I forgot to remove it and decided to keep it, wasn't causing problems. And yeah, Autosave 8 is the last *good* save and it looks like GreyGarden caused the issues since everything went sideways according to the save files I'm looking at. So it was Conqueror or SS that did it since Greygarden is prebuilt by Conqueror. Not to mention my last run, nearly level 80, with few problems and I was adding and removing mods, but I wasn't using Conqueror, just SS 3 in 1. So until KingGath can streamline things Conqueror will cause problems like this. I remember in my Raider runs I would run into things like this. Bleh. My last Raider run I had the Jamaica Plains bug where if I came anywhere near Jamaica Plains it would CTD until I managed to nuke it and let it rebuild. So that's settled. Conqueror caused a bug that spiked Suspended Stacks to the point the save game was wrecked. The evidence is right there, 4 Suspended Stacks in the previous 20 levels and in 1 minute that goes to nearly 200 because I got near to a settlement that Conqueror prebuilt. And because its at 200 now it won't load and play forcing me to reload a prior save where Suspended Stacks is only 4 or less. Or start over and remove Conqueror.

So it was Conqueror or SS that did it since Greygarden is prebuilt by Conqueror.

You have zero evidence of that, it is just something you are assuming.
You didn't know what fallrim was a few hours ago and now all of a sudden you are diagnosing exactly what the problem is.

Bullshit statements like this are a fast way to find yourself not getting any help.
4 suspended stacks on an early save is still an indication of a problem btw, but you already knew that right?

Yes but you yourself said 200 is unrecoverable, I didn't get 200 until I went near Greygarden. Not exiting the Vault, not going into Sanctuary, not going to the Red Rocket, not going to Diamond City, nor any of the dozens of other places I went from level 1 to 20 otherwise this would have reared it's ugly head sooner. So what caused it to go from 4 to 200 in a 1 minute walk that brought me near Greygarden? Obviously Greygarden did. It was my first visit to Greygarden (why I fast traveled to Arcjet instead of Greygarden) and then my game went very unstable and very crashy to the point loading the save in The Fens just crashes instantly. Before then it was fine and mostly stable. After it's toast, useless, got to roll back before Greygarden. Back before the 'unrecoverable' , as you put it, 200 Suspended Stacks. I'm going off of what you said, and if 200 is unrecoverable and 200 is where it wound up when I visited Greygarden then Greygarden is the problem.
