SS2 Mechanist lair

Do you have cinematic view on? I found with SS1 sometimes I would get ctd for city plan builds or upgrades during the cinematic, but if I kept that off, it worked fine. When cinematic view is off, the stuff just starts appearing around you. I just stand there and let it happen.

I think the same goes for Vault 88; turn off cinematic camera for both the internal settlements, (unless the city plan creator has put in their own cinematic camera markers)

Nope. I turned that off long ago. I've tested these plans with every applicable SS2 configuration available repeatedly. Still the same result. My vault 88 plans work fine. I run a very light mod list with none that are on the known incompatibility list and I haunt the forum posts for problem mods. Other than SS2 and WSF I run no mods that affect settlers, workshop, settlements, or locations. I have extensively playtested with this mod list for stability and have been running with it for quite awhile now with ctd's very rare for me now.

I have always had issues with the Mechanist lair settlement, with NO MODS, just the base game. I think it is the location itself. It is buggy. During a vanilla playthrough the game would CTD while I was scrapping debris. Did this repeatedly, on many vanilla play throughs.

I have just built in Vault 88 for the first time, and it seems very stable. We will see.

I managed to get the vanilla SS2 city plan to work, but what upset me was not being able to build either a caravan or comms plot. Neither of them seemed to be available to me when I tried to add them myself.

Mechanist Lair isn't a full workshop - I don't think you are allowed certain types of things, and from the sound of what you said, it might be adding Municipal plots to its no go list.
There are a couple of commands you can run in console mode if you have access to it,
It's been a while and I can't remember which works where, (Mechanist Lair, Boston Airport and home plate).
Make a save first of course.
(You should only need one or the other )

Apply by entering console mode, click on the workbench (so it shows it ID number) and type in the following and press enter, (then exit console and enter workshop mode to see if it worked).

You only need to do it once and then it will be as a full workbench from then on in your saves

Alternatively I think Nexus has some mods that will do it too

Sorry to dig up a two year old thread, but it was one of my top google results, and I wanted to include the information I found in case it was helpful to future google searchers.

Boston airport and mechanist lair

addkeyword 246f85

Let me build plots, setup caravan plot connections, and build vanilla food and water. Everything worked as I hoped.

Home plate

addkeyword 246f85

Let me build a vanilla radio beacon, vanilla food, and just plots and furniture from the SS2 workshop menu

addkeyword 5A0C8

Let me build generators, vanilla water, the rest of the SS2 workshop items

I still could not send settlers to home plate, and plots get stuck on “this plot has not finished setting up.”

Similiar to the previous poster I'm replying on this old thread due to it being one of the top hits when I searched for this topic. Attempting to use a city plan in the lair results in instant CTD.

Make sure you go to the workbench, select the manage option, and increase the build limit to at least around 400%. See if that fixes the CTD. Often when City Plans have an instant CTD it is because they are blowing past the settlement budget in one go so much the engine can't handle it. If you increase the budget to start with, that can often solve the problem.

I try to remember to increase the budget to 4 or 500% before selecting a city plan in any settlement as a rule, also turned the cinematic off as it kept making me have to dismiss and grab my companion every time it happened. But under these conditions, I pulled up a city plan for the mechanists lair without any issues
